I have a JRT.  She is 10 months old.  She is coming into heat now.  My vet told me DO NOT breed her during the first heat.  He said their bodies are not fully mature and can possibly cause complications (not always, but could) for her or the pups.  He said to wait until the second heat which is about 6 months later (around about) so we suspect that she will be able a year and 4 months at the time. Good Luck

It varys alot in dogs. Some can go into heat at as young as 6 mo. or as old as a year and a half. You can't force your dog to breed. she has to be in heat. My dog was bred on her fist heat and had pups without me even being home. They were all fine but she is a medium/large size dog and smaller dogs have more pregnancy/whelping complications so you probably should wait until her second heat. Good luck! Tanisha
