How TIFF is useful in data compression?

TIFF file is really not the best way to compress a file..TIFF is for example you have this document that you want scanned but it is about 3 pages long so TIFF will put those three pages into a three page document. It would take a lot of memory to save into this format..PDF works better in my opinion or saving the pages individualy like into word doc or bitmap, jpg, jpeg, gif.
