My Husky develops the same small sores and attracts flies in the summer also.  I try to keep him in the house during that time, but I don't know what causes it either.  I would be happy to find out.

My dog in the summer used to develop sores on its' ear and tip of its' tail.  We found out that this was caused by him running beside our chain-linked fence.  He would run beside it and his ears naturally it every bump along the way.  There is sav that you can buy from either the vet or a pet store like petsmart for this.  Every day just put some on there and the sore will heal up.  The sav helps keeps the flies off while the sores are healing as well.

My Siberian Husky also attracted the flies, in fact the sores get bloody and attract more flies.  Go to a pet store and get an ointment that is used on cows to repel flies.  It works great!!! Use it as soon as you see the sores.

The sores are actually caused by the flies.  Visit your local pet store or vet and inquire about the creams that repel flies and other insects.  Good luck!

The salve is a great idea, for a quick, cheap fix you can put (new) motor oil on the tips of the dogs ears. This will detur the flies while the ears heal. It is caused by the flies eating away at the tips, as you will notice, once the fly season is past, the ears will heal.
