i am not a punk, but would like to be a hc punk. how can i...

Actually you cant 'become a punk' ... But heres a few things to know anyway: Music. Stop buying your music at the mall. When you buy your cd's at the mall, you're paying way too much for them, and the band you're hoping to support is getting only a teensy percent of the profit. Instead? Get online and buy them straight from the label. Or, better yet, pick it up when you see them live. For some bands, the only money they get while touring is from the merchandise and cd's they sell. Don't listen to music because you think you're supposed to. Just listen to what you like, be it punk, pop, country, goth, emo, whatever. Support your local scene. Find bands, go to their shows, throw a few bucks at them. If nothing else, you can say you're oldskool when they make it big. Carry on the 80's tradition: Make Mixtapes. Give them to friends, boyfriends, girlfriends, your dentist, whomever you please. Clothes/Fashion. Just stop trying. Wear what you like, wear what's comfortable. It doesn't matter. If you want to dye your hair blue, do it. If you want to wear spikes and plaid, do it. Just don't do it for the wrong reasons. Quit paying for the labels. Don't pay an extra $60 because it says 'the gap' on it. Paying for quality makes sense. Paying for labels doesn't. Etc. Quit judging people. That means everyone, even cheerleader jock types, or the so-called enemy. Don't be hypocritical. Stop buying anything at the mall. Support the mom and pop shops, and mail order. You'll get better stuff, and will be supporting the people who need it. DIY stands for Do It Yourself. Make your own duct tape wallet and bondage pants. Use an old shirt and a sharpie to make a patch for your coat. Just don't buy it if you can make it yourself. ---MAINLY--- The entire punk idea is to think outside the box, to go against the flow. Think for yourself, and the rest will fall into place

.......im very sad for all of you.....trying be a punk.....okay let me say this first "you are born a punk, you cant just become one, or you are a poser!" think about this.......dam preps. i mean its very sad to see all these people talking about becoming something that you cant! You know what, why don't you all go burn in a ditch somewhere! Oh one more thing if you want to be punk...your not scared to take your live threw ,my meaning "suicide" something i am not even scared of, you gotta think before you guys say this junk...i mean if one day we were all in one room and i happened to have a gun, i would shoot every last one of you for the hey of it....ill get away with it to.....i always do......

Punk, is just being yourself. If you spend your time trying to be different and punk, you end up just being a sell out. How ever you want to dress, how ever you want to act, it doesn't really make you punk, unless you are yourself. Also, stay consistent. You can't be punk one day, and preppy the other, and actually be punk. Still, having said what I have said, there are still some exceptions: all white $80 shoes anything that's in style For me, being punk is making "alterations" in my clothes (ripping down the back pockets and the useless stuff in my pants). If something doesn't fit me, I just cut it. I make my own shirts with sharpies, and I don't buy name brand merchandise, unless it's really cheap (Garage Sales Rule). In all, I think I pretty much contradicted myself a few times here, but everything is just a big paradox, right?

Okay. This is sad. Why would anyone need ADVICE on how to become punk!?!? Hmm?! Your intentions may be noble I guess.To say "screw comformity! AND the goverment! And everyone else who stands in the way of me being me!" But punk can not be achieved by doing what others advice you to. I'm not punk. I'm not a poser. I'm not really anything at all! Well that's a lie. I am someone. I am Sam the Pancake Queen! Wanna know why? I make the best damn pancakes this side of IHOP. But that's beside the point. The point is you have asked the world a question and actually expected an enlightning answer in return. That's your first screw up. Don't ask people stupid questions like "How do I change my whole perspective on life, so I can fit an ideal image of punk-ness". You will be ridiculed harshly. And don't take these losers advice! Don't take my advice! And WHY in the hell would you WANT to be punk!? You are seriously NOT punk material if you have to ASK for help on becoming punk. Most people don't become punk, they just are punk. Simple. Well I'm lying. You can become punk, a lot of people do. But please try not to ask stupid questions, and not expect harsh ridicule in return. AND TO THE REST OF YOU!!!! Don't help this person!!!!! What's wrong with you!!! Don't HELP THEM BECOME SOMEONE THEIR NOT!!! Let their friends help/scorn them!!! You can't just dress up and say, "Look at me, I'm punk!" someone has already done that and her name is Avril! You can't just listen to punk bands and say you're punk, cuz that's just not right! Punk comes from the inside. It's being yourself, and making a statement. It's being outside the box and going into the unaccepted corner with no fear. It also is standing up for what you think is right. Whether it be your favorite band and your right to listen to them, or standing up against the government, and expressing your own view. It's going the distance to see the band, and not waiting for the band to come to you. It's when you get a crappy ass job just so you can afford the concert tickets. It's staying true to your friends and not ditching them to become popular. It's a way of life, and if you haven't lived by it already, you can't change it. Thank you for your time

You can't just TELL someone to go against the flow. Like all these guys have said, it's gotta be natural; otherwise, it's not punk anymore. Listen, if someone came to me and asked how to be punk (what clothes, what earrings, what tatoos, etc.), I'd tell them to quit trying to be what their not; it's no longer punk. Cause it's defeating the whole purpose. If you want to be a punk to be "in" or to be "cool", then screw you, cause you've already gone against one of the major intents of punks; to be yourself, and to not care what others think about your choices and your preferences (whether they be political, fashion-wise, or any other). If you wanna be cool and fit in with OTHER people, then you're not exactly following those intents, now are you?

ok listen whoever started this thing about how u wanna be punk.. obviously ur not a punk, thats ok just be ur self...if u like punk rock,FINE,if u dont like the goverment,FINE,even if u like avril lavien, i dont give a crap and if some one tryes to push u around and put u down cause ur not a punk or w/e kick the crap out of themm...who really cares what they think or what they want u to think its all about what u want to do and think,and dont try and follow those people who call them selves hard core punks cause their actually poesers on the inside... punk is not a fasion...punk is not a label infact, i dont think i really even know what punk is but i belive that almost everyone in this chat room is basically a punk, because they all have ther own different ideas that their willing to fight for and they really dont give a crap what anyone else thinks... now thats being a PUNK!

Punk, Goth, Prep... What the hell does it matter? Why on earth is everyone obsessed with these useless, useless labels that do none other but completely eradicate the concept of individuality? I'm sure everyone on this board was born with a brain (or else you'd not be able to type here, right?). Then how about USE it? These labels are so credible and consistent that not even two people could come up with the same definition for "one" concept. "Be yourself, do things you wouldn't normally do" was one of them. Hello! Isn't that an outright contradiction? "Hate on the government!" - I just want to thank that person who replied with a "apparently my dad's totally punk" to that one because it gave me good laugh. What takes the cake is the "black bracelets, black make up" bit though. In that case half the world's gone punk. There is no definition to punk. There used to be one when the movement emerged in 1974-79 but now it's dead. Yes. The pioneers died somewhere along the way and there's no way punk is coming back. GET OVER IT! Why don't you do something that REALLY reflects your generation and above all YOURSELF instead of digging up the things our close-to-ancestors believed in 30 years ago? The monarchy's dying, by the way - so no - you can't bang on about that either. Labeling is just an new form of ignorance. "Too Punk", "Not Punk enough", "poser" - and all this originating from a bunch of druggies who were really themselves and didn't have good old Johnny Rotten or Sid or f***ing Good Charlotte to look up to. That's the punk worthy of being called original. And now it's gone. So go - rack your brains and find who you REALLY are without having to add the word 'punk' at the end of your sentence. You'll thank me one day. Trust me.

I like rock, i used to be a metal-head, but then i realized that being one sucks, just like it sucks to be punk, gangsta, gothic etc. Isn't the purpose of being punk to be different, but what about the large amount of punk kids around the world, don't they dress the same way you do?, so maybe you're different to whoever that's not punk , but a exact copy of the pattern. Cuz Gangsta head are different too, they are different to whoever that's not gangsta , you get it. So, do you think that the creators of the punk movement were punk, no, they weren't, they were just singing the music they liked the way they liked, they weren't imitating anybody else like monkeys . Punk kids makes me sick, they represent the war against capitalism, but they don't realize they have become a part of it, Have you never being in a punk or gothic store, ha, everything is so expensive, So, don't be a punk, don't be punk

Alright, anyone who even mentioned "Hot Topic" as a reply to how to be hardcore punk is just a mall whore. The music is most important. You can wear whatever the hell you want, creepers, tight black jeans, braces, studs, whatever. If someone asks you who the hell that band is on your shirt, you'd better know otherwise it's pretty damn obvious that you're a fraud. Check out Sheer Terror, they're a favorite of mine. Along with the music comes dancing. Learn how to skank or dance or what have you. It's not that difficult, it's fun, and it'll earn you more scene points. Have fun with the clothes you wear and what you listen to. That's the whole point. Just go out and party.

punk is a music scene. its not about individuality, or being yourself... its about a bunch of people who listen to the same type of music. and yes, there is fashion in the punk scene... not saying every punk dresses like a punk, and i'm not saying everyone who dresses punk is a punk... i'm simply saying that most kids in the punk scene dress alot alike. kind of the same way how when you hang out with a group of people you start to dress and act a little like them... you arent trying to copy... its just somthing you pick up by being around those people... good charelotte, sum 41, blink 182, and all those guys arent punk bands. their more of a pop-rock. http://forums.sykospark.net/ has alot of info on punk music, the scene, and yes, even on the fashion.

being a punk means you don't care much about anything... slacking off at school... not attending at church or any school activities.. not caring that your clothes have holes in them... piercings... tattoos.. wearing mostly black.. listening to metal or punk rock.. skate boarding... safety pins on clothing or backpacks aren't really nothing to do with punk if you know what your doing.. spike necklaces or bracelets.. wrist bands.... punk isn't really to describe people, it's a slang term from adults I beleive.. sagging your pants.. naming your dog gutter.. wearing skate shoes...alot of them skateboard.... some color their hair different colors.. black, pink, blue.. etc.. mohawks.. punk does exist and it's still alive today.. so don't get me wrong.. biggest school in state has alot of them.

weirdnoises seems to have the best advise. There really is no way to "become punk". Except to be yourself and to try and be more politically and socially aware. Get involved in your community for causes you believe in. Listen to music you like. It doesn't matter what other people say, there will always be someone calling you a "poser". Don't let it get you down. When people say that, it is because they feel like there are certain standards that you have to live up to to be considered punk and that they have met those standards and are above you. Dress the way you like. A bit of advice, though, if you can find it somewhere else, don't shop at Hot Topic. The clothing there is way overpriced for the quality. You can find the same things on the company's websites for a lot less. Making your own clothes, or thrift store shopping also ensures that you can find/have inexpensive clothes that you like. Punk is not one certain ideology. There are vegan ans meat eaters, Republicans and Green Party members, people who are pro-choice and people who are pro-life. The most important thing is to stick by what you believe in. Don't wear clothes or listen to music just because you think, or someone told you that it is punk. Like what you like and be who you are.

y do u people ask other people how to be punk u dont just become a punk.being punk dosnt meen dressing a certin way u just wair what you want and do what you want but dont go buy ur music from the big stores go buy it from the bands concert so they get the money and not the mall or whatever and stop trieng so hard to be punk if ur meant to be a punk then u will be and omg im tired of people sating that blink 182 and goodscarlett are the bset punk bands there sell outs ya some of there music is cool but they do the opistit of what punks about they sell out to big companies like MTV as far as good punk bands go theres rancid the offspring and theres a lot more just stop trein so and and make sure u stick it to the man then mabye just mabye ull be a punk

you know what? My best friend is a punker. she acts just like every one else except a bit crazy make that alot. But it isn't about the way u look. It is the way u are, your personality. I am not a punker but everyone says I am because of the way i act. I just wear what ever is in my closet. Set your own style don't follow styles. people sate punkers as people who wear black clothes and have lots of piercings and wierd hair. who really cares what u look like. punkers are known for not caring like if it is raining they want to get soaking wet while every one is inside. they are just being who they want to be. and they are definatly not the same. and also those little clicks suck because they always compare u to something bad. and you know wat you can do? you can pick up some material or get cheap black pants or watever and make your own style. instead of copying other people make people copy you.

PUNK IS A WAY OF LIFE. u showed ur interest in it & u lead the way u want it to be. go against pple. fascism. anti-govt. anti-nazi's unless u r a nazi punk. hate the politics. punk is dead but the movements lives. u can't acheive punk in anywhere now in these world. govt holds the biggest control ever but u urself chose not too tink, u riot. u blive in violence. its ur way of life. u don tink abt how much u bother to wear ur Dm boots or wer to get ur side zip. its all in ur heart. not to show it to other pple tt u r a punk. a so-called wanker wud b one. the pride of a punk lives in u- it does not mean u had to dress up. ok so i think that everyone for the most part has been wrong. close, but still wrong. if its even possible to become punk, the least you can do is learn some of the history behind it. when punk bands first came out, most people probably thought they sucked ass. in general, they couldnt sing and they couldnt play. it was what they had to say that got them the respect and in the end fame. what they did became punk though. thats why most people give the whole 'be yourself' crap. punks in the beginning didnt care if they were famous. they didnt care if they were killed. they played their songs because they wanted their voices to be heard. and they didnt necessarily hate the govt. the people running it, yes. but the us govt itself is actually one of the best kinds out there. personally i just think we need to get a whole new crew running it that actually cares about the people and not the money and other crap. as far as clothes go- it doesnt always matter. if you want to wear stretchy flares you bought on sale for $10 at foleys along with some vans or converse and some random tshirt (like those oldnavy year/flag shirts or something you got from doing something i dunno) than thats fine. if you want to wear a whole lot of black thats fine too. you can wear what you want if you really want to. just dont be one of those people that dress and act a certain way just to get attention but is really something else. thats what makes people mad and start calling you a poser. basically, just try to learn the history of punks. the 80s were a good time. punk wont ever be the way it was truely meant to be again because those years and those people are dead.

How to be Punk in 3 easy Steps: Step 1: Rebel against all hypocrisy and conformity. Change hair, clothes and attitude to reflect this new rebellion. Tattoos, piercings and Drug and Alcohol addictions are optional. Step 2: Watch SLC punk. Realize that punk itself is a hypocrisy and all non conformists look alike. Become disillusioned and consider rejoining mainstream society. Meditate on this dilemma for several weeks. Step 3: Come to the realization that true punkhood rests in the knowledge that nothing is punk and therefore everything is punk. Allow this new found enlightenment to show you that everything you do is punk even when its not. Step 4: Do whatever you want. Real punks can't count.

I am one serious PUNK! People consider me dangerous! I do witch craft, I wear black, I LOVE goth clothes, I'm not a poser, I don't care what people think, I break the school rules, I HATE preps, I glare too much, I'm smarter than any average genius, I worship the devil, I tell people things and don't listen to their damn answers, I'm f***ing rich, I hate children, I hate celebrities, I hate dogs, I hate meat and I hate you all! NONE of you know what punk or goth is! To me, it seems like all it is to you is just a joke. NOT! It's a dark style with a rebellious personality. If you were a real punk, You wouldn't have this lame website. Also, if you were one, you would understand what I'm trying to tell you. You can't be a punk, it has to be in your blood..like me! Im not here to critisise u (sorri Im crap @ spelling) But u have jst broken or breached sumthing that shouldnt of happened in the 1st place. I alike many others dont lyk the term punk I lyk to call it 'individuality' and thats sumthin that u jst have broken. I want u to do this 4 the rite reasons if u follow every1s advise jst coz they said to do it, then u truly wont b wat u r lookin 4! Uve really got to ask urself wat u want instead of trying to be sumthin whos other pplz advise...coz ull end up doin wat others want! If u end up following a 'cred' or 'trend' then u r jst a sheep, a follower and ur life will be nothin but lies. Being as I say an 'individual' is about goin outside the limits do sumthin that is extreme and u feel is right (thumbs up) but who am I to tell u wat to do, becoz then Im goin against everything I stand 4. I jst think u shouldnt be asking this....I think ur doin this for the wrrong reasons! 2 every1 out there, live life LARGE, EXTREME dont be afraid to do what u want, u were put on this earth for a reason to live ur life the way u want it and to have sumthin good come outve it :) DOnt be afraid to be different, ppl accept that. Some good punk bands are: The Sex pistols The Clash The Ramones Youth Brigade Minor Threat Black Flag The Misfits The Circle Jerks The Dead Kennedys But don't listen to them because you think it'll make you punk, listen to them because you like the music and it means something to you. I asume you're asking about punk bands so you can listen to them not just pretend to. Don't shop at Hot Topic. Punk is about going against the mainstream and Hot Topic is owned by THE GAP! It's so stupid that the people who shop there think that it'll make them different, but all they're really doing is dressing the same as all the other "different" people. Most importantly just be yourself and don't do things just because you think it looks cool. There's this one girl at my school who had the anarchy symbol drawn all over her pants and my friends and I were talking about anarchy and her words were "Anarchy? Is that like some band?" I am agreeing with b yourself on this one because when your in here there is many different answers and many different people are saying well you have to do this and you have to do that you cant "become punk" punk= be yourself whatever you do that you think is fun is punk you can run down the street scratching your ass saying i have poison ivy if thats your definition of punk then you go for it!!! and it kinda does have to do with the music you listen to if u go haul your ass around wearing punk clothing and singing some rap hip hop song you are a disgrace to all punk society! needless to say if u do your not punk because punks don't have the same interests with rap atleast i don't and my friends well bye hope i was answering your questions i tried!

ok. first of all: YOU CANNOT BECOME "PUNK" BY ASKING OTHER HOW TO. + why be someone you're not? i mean. wearing chucks and a simple plan shirt is not punk. punk is expressing yourself out of the box. you don't see punks wearing etnies or dc's because thats what everyone else wears. and good charlotte is no punk. nor simple plan, sum 41, the donnas, ashlee simpson, gosh i could go on forever.. anyway. real punk bands are. rancid, the sex pitols, the casualties, the smiths, social d, and many more. they might be main stream punk bands, but they're amazing. and dont shop at hot topic. it's for POSERS. k? k. dont buy named brand stuff. go to good will.. it's cheaper anyway. get some plaid pants. and combat boots. wear a jacket with patches all over it. dye your hair pink, blue, orange, red, ect. hand out with other punx. dont judge people. make your own patches. get a mohawk-fauxhawk. the more piercings the better. wear skirts with ripped stockings. drink. smoke. have sex. the end.

being punk isnt about all that stuff up there. and i think some of u are confusing punks with hippies. but w/e punk is about unity. the better of all people. stopping oppression bringing people togther stoping raceism. stoping the control of currupt powers. and occationally gettin drunk off ur ass and havin as much fun in life as possible . cause u only get one life . and it should be spent helping others in need and having fun doing it. o and here are a few good bands i like oxymoron blackflag aus rotten gg allin subhumans the unseen the virus cheap sex lowerclass brats stiff little fingers dead kennedys the germs the misfits sham 69 buzzcocks and clit 45 to name a few. and if u want a pic of me [ which i dont know why anyone would heres a link myspace.com/ilovegrievous o annd just so u know i dont do the clothing to be cool. i just like makin my own. p.s. dont EVER put ur mohawk up on a cruise. u WILL be asked by about 300 people to take a picture with them. o and please dont become punk just to get attention. cause u will

dude u guys like have problems. alright let me tell u this. punk bands are in fact. the ramones, misfits,dead Kennedys, and the adicts. and thats like only 4 bands. theirs loads more punk music. punk isn't no clothing style its like i guess a way of life. like anarchy against government, "anarchy" means a world without government, a world that is ruled by the people no higher power. and if u want to dress punk, well i guess i could tell you, what i see punks wear. get a denim jacket cut the sleeves off, put a few studs on the collar and on the shoulders, and put some of your favorite band patches on it. and NO blink 182, and NO goot charlotte, and NO sum 41, and NO bowling for soup. or any other rap bands or anything. and u better not put any punk band patches on just to be cool. u have to listen to them u have to acually like the bands!!! and for pants just find some old ripped up tight jeans. for shoes, just get some chuck taylors.

You know what who ever wanted to know the difference between punk and anarchy its that anarchy is trying to take over the goverment trying to bring chaos and the end of the world.If you listen to the casualties a real punk band or the unseen and you actually listened to their lyrics then you would know that punk is just trying to tell the goverment and us to treat everyone and ourselves with respect and for the upper class people to spend more money on the human soiety then on bombs and toys because war is not a game to mess with.Also punk is not about the way you look its about the way you feel about whats going on in the world today and how you reflect on it.the clothes and the music just tell people that you are trying to get that out that it doesn't matter what you look like but your voice speaks louder then you body expressions and you should remember that.

This is dumb. Lyk a lotta people have said, if ur asking "how to be punk" you'll just be copying what people say, not being urself and being individual, which is the whole thing behind the idea of punk. Personally, i wear a couple black bracelets, black nailpolish, and a black choker. As for clothes, most of what i wear is black t shirts and jeans. I have just a few piercings (5) and i have never died my hair (its blonde) as for music, i listen to a wide range of stuff, from pop/punk to melodic death metal. And if that doesn't fit someones definition of punk, then u know what? I don't care. I am who i am. If you don't think i am "punk enough" i don't care. I think i am punk, in that i do my own thing and am individual. And if i cared what you think i wouldn't be punk. So be yourself. If you're not punk at heart, all the black leather in the world won't change it

Weidossis. OR whatever You make a great point. I know that punk is a way of thinking and it is being your self wether its the norm or not. WHat gets me is how the norm is becoming punk and gothic. That is the fashion. so if all the kids are doing it to be like everyone else and paying 60 bucks for a skirt at hot topic is the same as being "the Enemy" and paying 60 bucks at abercrombie. So does that make them conformists of a non-conformast group. Plus when i went to school all the punks and gothics where rich little babies and only a few were doing it bc the wanted to and just didn't care what other ppl thought. There is punk in all of us. Some just choose to ignore it for the fear of being different.

Actually, you just kind of put yourself into it or you just are meant to be without deciding. you do have to be against the stereotypical teen/pop culture in whatever country you are in. You have to avoid self-proclaimed skater punks though; you'll see them in Pacific Sun or any other store that sells colorful clothes with skate labels on them and they normally have longer curly hair. The girls are the same, but they normally dye their hair a reddish color or highlight it. DON'T TRUST ANYONE WHO WEARS SKATE LOGOS UNLESS THEY ARE ACTUALLY SPONSORED!! Punks also shouldn't have wealthy parents or priveleges due to wealthiness (that leads you to poser punks and most emos). The way you dress doesn't really matter, believe it or not, because the "traditional dress" has been adopted by the pop-culture (in the USA in particular); just dress differently, it's best to collaborate and make your own outfits. As for music, I wouldn't really want to go near anything that is considered punk in which is real mainstream at the moment (examples: Green Day, CKY, Good Charlotte, Franz-Ferdinand), especially if you don't know about them (I liked Green Day before they real popular). Don't confuse mainstream emo or hardcore or metal with punk, this includes bands like Fall Out Boy (emo-pop), Simple Plan (emo-pop), Taking Back Sunday (hardcore), The Used (emo), My Chemical Romance (hardcore, but they kind of changed), Slipknot (metal), System of a Down (metal). Check to see if the content is punk (compare "my life sucks cause I can't buy new clothing, so I'm your bloody valentine" to something like "There is no future for this world full of idiots"). You shouldn't use rock bands/skateboarders/athletes as role models for your personality instead of your music, because a true punk wouldn't look up to anybody, because they would look down on everybody. But some bands I listen to that I would reccomend are The Misfits, Dead Kennedys, Bad Religion, Descedents, Black Flag, and Rise Against. Punk music never had good production qualities, so don't be disappointed with some crappy sounding punk CDs. ONE BIG NONO: DO NOT LABEL YOURSELF TO ANYBODY, BECAUSE THAT'LL PUT YOU ON THE POSER WAGON FASTER THAN ANYTHING.

Technically, MOST bands post 1995 aren't considered punk rock music, because it began to break out into the mainstream quite shortly afterwards. Any bands formed afterwards are normally pop-punk, popular-emo, hardcore or post-hardcore. And again, anything that becomes popular is NOT considered punk in status, but still in Musical style, unless they completely change in affect to the mainstream (AKA: Green Day). And, in the context of school society, punks were treated just about as well as lesbians and queers are treated (HAHA! Screw the homosexuals!). You probably will see a bunch of posers at the Warped Tour, considering a bunch of mainstream bands that aren't even punk are there (Like My Chemical Romance, Good Charlotte, and SLipknot);recently, alot of TRUE punks are normal people, they don't have the style, but to the way the word punk has been emphasized in today's youth culture it's been pushed to just being a "talk, but no action" type of thing. I mean really, have you every seen some yuppie girl in a Billibong shirt with dyed hair wearing a tie want purposely to knock over a bunch of junk and embarrass herself in public? I don't think so. THE TRUE MEANING OF "PUNK" IN THE ERA OF 2000-NOW ARE: Normal teens They don't skate (since that in the 'in thing') They play in the school band (since that is not cool) They are outcasts or geeky They are very skilled in art They listen to old music (Beatles, some classic punk bands, swing music, classical, alot of old stuff) Not fashionable They are normally outcasts since they are accused of being psychotic or too odd to be cool (they pick their nose in class, they bring their homework in plastic bags sealed with superglue, etc.) They get good grades (since that is not cool anymore) and they are treated like trash by alot of posers and preps (like getting food dumped on, being pushed into lockers, getting their bags stolen and whatnot) Unfortunately, that's what the meaning of true punk has been rendered to. The artificial meaning of punk in this era is: You have to like bands with guys that have alot of tattoos and piercings. You must dye your hair You must shop at Pac Sun, Hot Topic, or Claire's You must be popular You must hate your life Any bands that have guitars are punk (Slipknot is a f**ing mainstream rock band you idiots and so is Green Day!) Merging emo is punk Having to resent Hilary Duff, Ashlee Simpson, and Avril Lavnige (who the heck cares) Any emos, metalheads, or posers are considered punk *They worship Bam Margera, Tony Hawk, Billie Joe Armstrong, Joel Madden, etc. Yes this does sound sad, but that's what happened to punk as time went on. And in case any of these posers haven't noticed, most of the original punk dudes are old 60 year old fat guys. PS: I am NOT punk, goth, or emo; I just research alot.

Being punk is to be different. To have your own Style wether its cool or something other people would'nt wear if it was the last thing on earth. Punk is about not caring if The most popular girl in school disses your shoes. Punk is about being yourself. Sure, to get truly noted and considered as a prep black red and dark pink and purple are the way to go along with studs and ripped pants. But be warned. ok, i've read a lot of these questions and answers and i've got to say this is sad! why do you guys (well...some of u, not all) want to be somebody, or something, that you're not? i'm not a punk, and i don't pretend to be. i wear what i like and what is comfortable (and some of the things that i were ppl i guess would classify as punk...). u shouldn't be 'punk' because u want to fit in, be urself! if u like something, were it! like it? buy it! do it! but just be yourself. and, personally, you DON'T have to rebel against the gov. i think president Bush is a GREAT president and i am a Christian. and if u have a problem with that, f u. so, with that said, go BE YOURSELF!

I don't consider myself punk. I just listen to what I want because I can, and that just happens to be like very mild punk rock. There are some people who are posers, and some people who are just a little of this and a little of that and labels don't apply. I'm black and I mainly listen to VERY MILD punk rock. I don't listen to labels. And when i say very mild I'm talikng bout Panic! At the Disco and Cute is What we Aim for. I guess if labels mattered you would call that emo? I dunno. I think this whole thing is very stupid. I also think that you people who are saying "You can't be punk, you'll never be punk" are the biggest idiots on the planet. People can be whatever they want. If they like the music and want to dress the way they feel then that's fine. If they like the idea of being rebellious and protesting the government, that's fine. punk is a lifestyle you feel it and live it theres a style to the lifestyle its simple and not that hard it develops over time buy some pants and band shirts or make your own shirts add stuff to them anything you want write on your stuff expirement with your hair you dont have to have a mohawk either listen to some good punk music standout read up on stuff that is happenign and develop your own opinions punk is all about being an individual get a piercing or tattoo look at different people in punk bands and get ideas of what you can do with your own clothing you dont have to make your appearance extreme just do things until your comfortable with yourself and how you look Take pride in the bands that you love do whatever you want and live for yourself

And any way being a punk is bad, all they do is, do drugs, have sex, smoke, and then just rock out all night. Plus, the tattoo's, when u get old like 80 if u live that long, u would look a fool with all the tattoo's. i mean saggy skin with inc all over it. Really doesn'tlook right at all. To be a real punk you don't have to dress like them or whatever, just try to be yourself. Because I believe being a punk is not how you dress up and how you look like and even on what music are you listening to but being a punk is all about how you respect other people and being humble. Look at the punk bands we are the one who are telling that blink182, new found glory, simple plan and etc. we are saying that they are punks, but they don't tell themselves or the people that they are punks you know what I mean, when you buy their albums the genre says alternative rock but not punk. But they are punk coz it's all about attitudes you know what i'm saying? For me that's the real punk other people say you are a punk but not yourself and people who call other people a poser are posers themselves. But if you want other people to know that you are into a punk world, you can wear a belt with the metal pins, the one with a knuckle thing, wear a chuck taylor or vans or skating shoes like DC shoe etc.. if you are more into nike that's fine go and check journeys shoe store they have nike sneakers that have a punkish style. Pants not too wide loose is ok but not the drum pants and oversize same in T-shirt mostly fit clothes but normal fit is ok, not too wide is cool and basically the brands it's better not to wear a hip hop brand but it doesn't matter just wear comfortable if you are comfortable with wide thats fine just be yourself and ofcourse respect other people it doesn't matter is you listen to hip hop sometime or dress like ghetto it's all good just respect other people and peoples opinion. You have to be an open minded like travis barker he looks like a punk the mohawk and all that stuff but he plays drum with other artists not just with punk band but almost wih everybody like hip hop and stuffs but it's all good people asked him about it and what he said was "I am a musician i play almost everything i even listen more on beat music like R n B's this is my profession and i learn lots of things playing different varieties of music and different artists" That's the real punk, he has his own goal and belief. just be yourself.. that's so punk rock!

u need plaid pants with zippers and stuff on them (even though the zippers are for nothing),tight shirts with bands on them such as The Casualties,Sex Pistols,The Ramones,The Clash,Misfits,The Exploited,etc. u have to be with anarchy (screw the government!!!!!!!!!!) u also need a studded leather jacket with band patches on it and u need a studded belt the hair style is either liberty spikes (that's what i have),Mohawks (do not get a stupid fohawk),or you can get a punk shag (which that is what the Sex Pistols have)and the hair needs to be died (my liberty spikes are black) and forget Hot Topic unless you are buying a punk shirt there or plaid pants,because you need to start getting your stuff at thrift shops,punk stores my favorite is x20 (but i can't actually go there because it is in Quebec,but i go to there website www.x20.com

Hey most of you people say that like everyone here is a poser but I see that sometimes the same person who says so in so is a poser is saying not to label people. So I say don't even lable people as a poser. Im not saying Iam punk, I never said I was punk but I have had people just come up to me and call me a punk. I don't try to be one I just stand up for what I believe in and do what I believe is the right thing to do. Yes I am parshly anti government and I do shop at hot topic somtimes but I also shop at american eagle sometimes and places like that. So for you people who say they don't like labeling yet call people posers go ahead and call me a poser if you like I could care less. Thats all I have to say for now.

I've been reading some of these and most have hit the nail on the head. Your asking how to be punk? Punk cant be engineered! you have to get up in the morning and with out thinking put on some Rancid on your boom-box, put on your clothes and start a roit! Punk stands for 'people under new knowladge' Thats new knowladge not the same old three chord riffs and tacky stereotypes. Were all part of a social ladder, and punks dont care weither thier on the top or on the bottom, as long as we got some beer and friends were happy. So if you really want some advise to live by: dont force yourself into becoming something your not, just wear, listnen and do what you like. That my friend is punk ideals.

LOL, You're being a fu*ing tard. Stop asking yourself what you want to be and start asking yourself who you are. If you do what you* actually like* to do and wear what you* actually like* to wear, then you're not going to fit in any mold. People will stereotype you no matter what, so why give them more amo and even more cause by dressing to fit a certain one? People claim not to like stereotypes, but they are dressing to get them. If you like something, go with it and throw people a new challenge; challenge them to know you* and not just your "safety pins." Also, stop asking other people what kind of music you're supposed* to like. Listen to all kinds of music and decide for yourself. You'll end up with friends you actually like and who like you* if you do this stuff. I don't hate punk clothing or "goth" clothing. I have shopped at Hot Topic even though people have said it's too main stream and even "poser," but I like some of their stuff. I also shop at Walmart. I have also shopped at Filenes before it was Macy's. Btw, personally, I think Good Charlotte is freakin' candy syrup, cool whip punk if I would even DARE place it under the punk label. I like safety pins too. : p If you are interested in making stuff from duck tape, there are many free patterns on the net and some books on it too I hear.

There is a common misconception about punk going around on this board and it's making me sick. Punks do not steal or rob, we are not violent and we do not hate. Sure, we may not be too fond of so called 'preps' and 'jocks', we may not appreciate their ideals, but that doesn't mean we hate them. Punks respect all people and all living things. Punk is not about dressing a certain way, though there is a typical style that is 'common' among us. You can shop at name-brand stores but it's better to shop at places like Goodwill and Salvation Army because it supports people in need. That is what Punks are for. They are for the rights of indigenous people, for people who are constantly discriminated against. Punks stand up for what they believe in, they are pro-Earth. We are /for/ the common people, the middle-class and the lower-class. Chains, duct tape, black...it's not necessary at all. I for one just like wearing rolled up jeans and a band-shirt or a shirt with a slogan or saying or Alice in Wonderland and a pair of comfy Chuck's. That doesn't make me punk though, that's just what I /like/ wearing. It's comfortable. You don't /have/ to listen to punk music, but that's how the culture developed. It was born from music. You can listen to other stuff though. I for one can't listen to Punk Rock too often. It's good music, but I like other music better. The only reason that punks are considered Anti-government is because a lot of laws do not help the common people. A lot of laws in our corrupted country benefit mostly the wealthy. However, I will say that you don't have to think that way, but it's a major part of the culture. You can't just become punk. You're either born punk or you are 'enlightened'. Meaning, you're not into it for the fashion, it's based on what you believe and the want to be an individual.

You gotta be kidding me you guys are a big joke, punk is not about fashion or about music its about an ideal! Punk is about rebelling against fasicts and controling government. The website you put up there (oxbloodoi.com) promotes skinheads the biggest fasicts in history, if the person that posted that claims to be a punk he is going against everything punk stands for. Anyway if you want to be a punk you have to belive in the idea of punk not the fashion or the music.

Read a book, be proactive, help others, thwart abusers, fight stereotyping, pick up a copy of Profane Existence. Sure the clothes add to the asthetic, but it's really about how you view the world and how you are willing to put in time to change the repressive systems in our societies.

I think whoever wants to be punk can try. But you also have to be yourself when doing this. You can't be punk just so you can be different from everyone else, that's not what it's all about. the stereo type punk is only something skin deep, if you like the look, then ok, but what i could call a real "punk" is someone with that certain kind of attitude that their Born With. But really, don't shoot for any look that doesn't fit who you are inside, otherwise you'll be lying to yourself and especially others, which is lame and in the end makes you look stupid.
