We are wiring a sub-panel in our (attached) garage by using conduit that travels through the walls, ceiling, and to the main electrical panel. My question is does the neutral wire from the sub-panel HAVE to return to the main electrical panel? The conduit is not quite large enough for the three wires (black, red, and white. We are grounding the sub-panel in the garage, itself.) Can the neutral wire be attached  to one of the main panel's grounding spikes which happens to be located outside near where the garage sub-panel is? (The main panel is also grounded inside to the main water line.) The outside grounding spike is much closer to the sub-panel. Or should we expand holes, etc. and run the neutral wire all the way back to main panel?
