I have a 1988 jeep cherokee that won't start.  The problem seems to be fuel related.  At first,I didn't hear the fuel pump turn on so I thought that i had a bad fuel pump but before replacing the pump, i tested the ground which was good.  I also tested the hot wire and noticed there was no signal.  I tapped into the hot wire on the fuel pump then ran it to the hot post on the battery and the pump came on and pumped gas.  I thought that if I turned the ignition switch forward and touched the hot wire on the hot post while the engine was turning,  the jeep would start but it didn't work.  Instead, everything shuts down when I do this.  It's as if though something knows that I'm trying to straight wire the fuel pump and tells the starter to disengage.  I've tried replacing the fuel pump relay but an not sure that I have replaced the correct one (I replaced the second relay from the front on the passenger side firewall).   The jeep just turns over as if though it's out of gas. Any suggestions as to what could be my problem?   Thanks
