We have a sharpei that is 12 years old.  During the day he is in excellent health, however over the past few months, during the night time, he starts panting and pacing.  He does this for hours, not able to get comfortable.  When you do get up with him, he wants to be right on top of you and follows you around.  He want to have someone with him during this time.  He eventually after usually 2-3 hours settles down. It's almost like he is having an anxiety attack.  Does anyone know what this is from?  The vet doesn't.  Thanks

I wonder if it is a version of sundowners. People that are older get very restless at night. This is very common with people with dementia or alzheimers. Do you think that your dog is just suffering from dementia or in other words"not all there"? He may act normal during the day but at night he gets restless. I hope you can find a remedy.

I also have a 12 year old Shar-Pei doing the exact same thing, she pants heavily day and night, paces the floor and wants 100% of your attention. Rarely will she lay down for a short nap.  She tries to get on the bed, on the couch or where ever you might be. I too came to the computer for an answer.
