For playing mp3 you can do the following:

1. Make sure that you dont install the xmms package when installing RH Linux 9. The current xmms package supplied with RHL 9 has some copyright problems when it comes to playing mp3's.

2. If you have already done so then unistall it using the -e option of rpm package manager.
(Its essential you do it from your command line)

3. Get a previous version of RHLinux. I used Linux 7.1. Insert CD1 if you have it and install the xmms package rpm using the -i option of the rpm package manager.

4. Insert CD2 and install the xmms-development rpm again using -i of the rpm package manager.

5. Do not install the xmms-gnome rpm. Its not required. Additionally if you try to do it, it will give you dependency problems.

6. Once you have done the above. Make sure you have refreshed things by removing .xmms directory from you home or root directory.

7. Please go through the info page for rpm. You will find a variety of options to fine tune it. I did not document my installation so I am not providing you the exact commands.

I have tried my best to give you an idea of how to run mp3 on Red Hat Linux 9 coz i have done it and its working fine.
