If straight-edge is all about "keeping your body pure", then why do you inject ink into your skin to make straight-edge tattoos? It's really easy to get infected, so shouldn't that also get banned in the "straight-edge doctrine"?

Getting a tat is a way to show that something is important to you and that you're willing to make a commitment to it. As long as you take care of your body, and wash the area correctly, it shouldn't get infected.

Hardline kids wont get tats, they think that it s poison. Most edgers see it as a significant conviction in life and will immortalize it in a tat

It's not poisoning your body, it's immortalizing your commitment to yourself and your body. Hey, if I have a sXe tattoo... I'm sure as hell not going ot break my commitment to being straight edge, removing the tattoo sure would be a pain in the ass. Tattoos are not poison and they only get infected if you go to some cheap tattooist that doesn't clean their freaking needles or if you don't take care of the tattoo properly once it's on. So, if you really care for your body, it's not about not getting tattoos, it's about getting them responsibly.

i think sxe tattoos are great. it shows that your dedicated and willing to stand up for your beliefs. but then again it does contradict your beliefs. i mean we talk about purity and keeping our body pure...then when you get tattoos...your body isnt pure anymore, you've entered a foreign substance in your body...so then your body wouldnt be considered pure would it? dont get me wrong i think all the sxe tattoos out there are effin awesome but still it does sorta contradict what you say.

Ink is forever, so should be straight edge.  I think that getting a tattoo just weeds out the kids who are in it untill they are 21.  Granted you don't have to get one to prove your edge, but it seems to reinforce your choice.

every straight edge cat or kitten that i know who got a straight edge tat (except one) has broken the edge, getting a tattoo is not the way to reinforce something for life, constantly it results in regret and shame.  i am straight edge, i do have tattoos
(not edge tattoos, however) and i feel this is a stupid argument.  it is impossible to be 100% pure.  why try.  i'mnot straight edge to keep my body pure.  i eat a hell of a lot of red meat - sorry vegans - and i don't care.  i'venever once read the ingredients on anything.  not everyone who is straight edge is in it to keep their body like a temple.  some of us just think things like drugs, drinking and promiscous (spelling?) sex are dumb.  speaking of rampant sex, isn't that a tenant ignored by most SXE kids today?  i love the people that tell me i'mnot real straight edge becuase i eat meat and meanwhile they are with a different girl every week.  last i checked a steak couldn't give you VD.

A tattoo most likely isn't going to kill you or impare your judgement in anyway. Drugs and drinking will. I'm hardcore against smoking, drinking, drugs, and promiscuous sex. I want to adventually get a tattoo because its a life time commitment just as staying sxe is.

Being straight edge is ALL about not poisoning your mind.  It is about finding productive fun ways to spend your time instead of piddling it away killing brain cells.  Now, I am definitely committed to the edge, not only to keep my mind at it's top operating quality, but also for ethical reasons.  Alcohol and drugs are demobolizers, that make us less likely to improve our social, ecological, and governmental environments.  I abstain from all animal products as well.  I, however, do not understand this contempt for promiscuity.  I definitely am against the objectification of women or any being on the earth for that matter, but I can't really find anything wrong with sex.  I am certainly opposed to sex for the wrong reasons, but I don't see anything else wrong with it as long as you are not hurting anyone.  It seems that those who do practice that kind of abstinence, and are very contemptuous of those who don't, are generally of the Christian faith, which seems to me to demobilize as well.  Straight edge and christianity are two very separate things.

Just some thoughts.

Edgers who wants tats are obviously aware of this. They check their artists carefully before they make a decision, as to make sure that they can do a good job. If you've got any ability in your trade what-so-ever, you're not going to let your customer walk away infected.

I'm not going to go into the meaning of my tattoos, since that wasn't what you asked.

its about not sleeping with random people.. its keeping yourself free from the risk of unwanted pregnancys, STDs.. true, some edgers abstain till marriage.. i am going to wait for the right person to come along.. some people think it ups them on the social scale.. but i believe it downs your self worth

ow, about the tattoo's, i'm not against it at all, i don't see tats as poison. Still I think straight edge is something for oneself and all my friends drink and smoke and whatso ever, if i would tell them it sucks if they drink and stuff... i don't think they'd appreciate it much

But anyway,  i'm having a difficult time being straight edge, i'ts been my 5th year , and  i'm kinda curious what its like to be 'high' or drunk. What do you think i should do,

I've only been straight edge for almost a year, but have been off of hard drugs a year and a half, I want to get a straight edge tattoo, but I wouldn't suggest someone getting one until they have been in the commitment long enough which is a personal choice.  as for the tattoo being toxic, that depends on your body and your tattooist, but a tattoo doesn't MAKE you sXe, you do.

I’ve called myself sXe for a little under five years now; I’ve only made brief contact with one other X’er at a show, I’ve received a lot of grief for believing in the principles that I do. The one thing that I wish people would realize, is that our decisions can only directly affect ourselves. My decisions are made for me and me alone; though I hope that others will eventually come to the same beliefs that I do, I know most of them won’t. Preaching my beliefs to others is only going to make them bitter towards the viewpoints I’m selling (kind of like that one guy that stands outside of malls and tries to tell everyone that “god hates fags”. Some people listen, but most roll their eyes in disgust and walk on). So all in all, I think I’m trying to say: I’m me, not you; you’re you, and not me.  Although we may believe in the same core concept, our faith within it may differ. And in my eyes, that makes us no better or worse than any one else.
Peace and Love - laura

so most of the comments are good, some bad.  sXe originated as a  group of guys standing out being different staying away from drugs.  the true def. is no sex, drugs, alcohol, meat, or anything that could harm the body.  but, now days there are neccesities, like for me, meat.  i am heavy into powerlifting and sports and i need meat.  as time progresses more things are needed. although tats arent a necessity, they are a way to make yourself stay true, anyone can waver from their beleifes, i was sxe for a good 2 years and then i caved and started smoking and drinking.  recently im getting out of it.  tattoos are basicly a reminder to yourself, and when you have one, everytime you pick up a joint or a beer, you can look at it or think about it and be like "nope cant do it"

thats my point of view, take it how you want.  oh and, anyone wanna draw me up a sXe tat?! :-D

Straight edge is more about commitment to stay poison free and not have addictions... or anything that could be considered a crutch or something you need.... personally, in my opinion ink in a form of self expression and way of showing its here to stay. And... thats beside the fact that most people dont know the true meaning of being edge. It goes beyond making a commitment to stay poison free. Its a self respect, integrity, and self worth issue more than anything...

sometimes, devotion to a certain way of life can be more harmful than helpful, even if it's a pure way of life.  For instance, I'm an edger who has a deep history of drug abuse, and i know how all that affects all those who come into contact with you.  Laura, however, doesn't seem to think so.  While i was using i was making of my life a garbage pit filled with nothing but filth. Now, I'm living a positive choice, the positive alternative, if you will, and i only hope that my decision will inspire others to stop killing themselves on the time payment plan. i use my edge tats as a way to stand up proudly and say to the world that i live by a code of conduct that most others refuse to live by. I'm going against the grain, the way any good punk should.

Tattoos are stupid. There is no need to alter your body in that way. I am hardline so I guess that explains my thoughts on the subject. As for the sex issue, ya do sleep around but you can be edge or hardline and still have sex with a loving partner or two (non-monogomous relationships are totally natural and as long as all participants are down and know whats up then its fine) but for gods sake use a condom until you and your partner(s) can get tested and then use some form of birth control. The last thing the earth needs is more humans. And last of all go vegan, stay vegan!

Straight Edge has gone way out of control. Im edge, i have tattoos. Being Edge is about being being true to yourself, your friends, your family, and for some, your God. Has anyone heard of someone dying from a tattoo? getting a tattoo is more of a personal choice. It has no effect on your judgement that alcohol and drugs would do. ink is ink. you tattoo your beliefs to your skin, so whoever sees them will know. they dont mean you'll stay edge. but they do mean you tried, which is more than most could say.
being a vegan is not an edge decision, who cares if you eat meat. God made the cows so we have food, so man kill cow. man eat cow. man still go to heaven.

oh and lindsey..."I THINK MARKING YOUR BODY WITH SOMETHING THAT IS PERMAENT IS WRONG .. SXE IS SUPPOSED TO KEEP THERE BODY AS A TEMPLE BUT A TAT WOULD JUST BE LIKE TAGGING ON YOURSELF LIKE MARKING UP UR TEMPLE .. "
tattoos have been accepted by many people as art, maybe you should too... but have you gone to a Church, and seen the stained glass, or the paintings? I guess Michelangelo's paintings at the Sistine Chapel were just tagging on a temple huh? Wake up, you ornament your body with your beliefs through tattoos, piercings, clothes, just like how Churches (which are temples) are decorated with their beliefs with stained glass, paintings, etc.

everybody's gotta just chill out. You're Edge your way, I am my way. Get over it.

There is more than one degree of Straight Edge. Different people take what it means to different extents. As you can tell from some of the comments here we can't all agree on what it is and isn't. Straight Edge to me is not doing something( whether it be one or a million things) to keep your body more pure than it would be if you didn't do it. So some people may say they are straight edge because they are keeping themselves free of STDs by avoiding promiscuity, and others may say they are straight edge because they are free of drugs and alcohol... or both. So really it doesn't matter as long as someones making an attempt to keep themselves clean. As for tattoos...some people may say it isn't   a way to show commitment..but people that do get them and don't stay committed are just people who aren't that serious about it and are doing it just for the fact that it's become a trend, and with those intentions they are not straight edge material.

Im getting my first sXe tat this week and im not doing it to be cool, or for pleasure. Im getting it for myself. Now to me sXe is no drinking, no drugs, and no casual sex. Thats true sXe to me, not this no meat vegan stuff. There are only 3 true x's in straight edge, not 4 or 5 or 6 and so on.

My thoughts:
I am, for lack of a better term, straight-edge.  I think that what makes me feel akin to straight-edgers is the pride in self-respect and motivated action.  I relate to this term, but don't claim it as an identity.  I made my own decisions and I fight my daily battles to be the person I want to be regardless of whatever everyone else is doing.
I don't drink, smoke, or do any drugs and I never have-- and have never thought of doing otherwise.  I don't mean to step on toes, but I don't feel that you should try to be part of the "straight-edge group" because you are clean now.  Though purity is a dangerous word and should be used with care, it can indicate a difference in mentality on these things.  If you ever have done drugs or drunk alcohol, you don't really think like the people who have always rejected these things.  You are not a bad person, but you are not the same.  It is best if you do not try to identify with people who will not understand your changing whims.
I don't have piercings or tattoos because I don't believe in the maintenance or unnecessary external factors.  I do sometimes consider my thinking "body temple", but I am not religious at all, so I say it with a grin and a shrug.
I also think-- this may be the atheist in me-- that any decisions I make about what I do or do not do are mine to make.  I did some soul-searching a long time ago and decided that caffeine is too naturally occurring to reject and would diminish my quality of life by making me reject chocolate-- an innocent concoction.  So, I modify my behavior by never taking caffeine for the purpose of its stimulating effects.  I also eat meat and have no objections to physical relationships.  These are natural things and it seems silly to reject them; it is like rejecting yourself.
Of course, if you Google Search for "Does alcohol cook out" you will see that not much is safe if you are worried about maintaining your "purity"-- and trust me, I raise a ruckus over alcohol content in restaurants and quietly bring my own snacks to friends' dinner parties.
The point is: get a tattoo if it fits what makes sense to you.  If it seems to clash with your ideals, why do it?  Straight-edge is best left as a vague description and not as a group label.  Those of you who agree with me are my brothers in mind.  Those of you who scoff at me don't bother me at all.  Everyone else is just everyone else.
Be strong.  Be pure.  Be you.

Okay check this out, I guess I missed how tattoos were immoral or I'm pure. Edger’s are about being pure and staying true. So let’s reflect a moment. In the early Egyptian days they kept their temples holy unto the Gods by marking the walls telling the great stories of sacrifice and the pains and joys there people had gone through in honor of themselves and their gods. as the age's went by if you reflect on every different type of race/origin/people you see that through the lifestyles and cultures all of them marked there temples, and there bodies in honor of something they believe in. did this make them impure, did this make them worse off? No! They were people that would die for what they believe in that would stand with there fist in there air. Same thing implies with straight edge. We are what we believe in. this is our temple why not give honor to it, by giving it marking that stand for everything we believe in.

im straight edge and veagn, and i already have one tattoo (not a sXe one tho, and of corse i checkd with the ink to make sure it was vegan friendly) but i shall be gettin a sXe and vegan tattoo soon, i can see how people think that ink is contradicting sXe, but not every1 does to have a pure body etc, i am havin mine to show that i am proud of my desisions and to show my commitment to both bein vegan and straight edge. my first tattoo was a personal heart design (on my inner left wrist) which has a great meanin to me from a time in my life which was a big struggle, but i got thru it with the love of my friends. which also became a big turnin point in my life. bein straight edge and vegan changed my world, and i want to show how much it means to me.

body is a temple? that's a christian religious belief, not one of straightedge. straight edge has simple rules don't do drugs, and don't have permiscuse sex. that's it nothing about tattoos, keeping youself healthy has nothing to do with whats on the outside of your skin.

I've been edge since I was 13 years old.  That's when I truly started thinking about the impact drugs and drinking will put on your life..  I don't think tattoos poisoning your body, they are representing a commitment that we've ("edgers") have made with our lives.  I am going to get my sXe tattoo in less than a month.  I've put a lot of research as to what I'm getting and where I'm getting it.  Also I've met the artist, (he is training me to be a tattoo artist as well). Therefore I know that he cleans the needles and does a great job at keeping his costumers happy and healthy.  I suppose the point I'm trying to get across is do some research about the tattoo you are getting, and the artist you are getting it from.

Well I am straight edge but under 18 so my mom wont let me get a tattoo so i carry around a big black sharpie and every day i make a big X on the front of my hand and write xsXex on my wrist. so if you think that tattooing yourself is like poisening yourself or just dont want the pain of a tatt then go buy some sharpies and color them on...

Tattoos, if taken care of properly, are nothing harmful.   Even the members of The Teen Idols, Fugazi, and Minor threat had tattoos.  Straight edge has changed so much over time. Sex is still part of straight edge...there is 3 X's, not 2

I felt this needed to be addressed -
"hardline is the belief of straight edge, veganism, Mormonism, and prolife. (I'm vegan and edge...but not hardline). about this sxe tattoo thing....is it true that ALL tattoo ink has alcohol? I've been considering getting some ink but i heard that it has alcohol in it."

Hardline is militant vegan. It really doesn't even have anything to do with straightedge. But most, if not all hardline kids are straightedge too...So they were naturally tied together over time.  It has nothing to do with Mormonism.  I am from the Salt Lake City Area. Most edge kids I know are Mormon. None of which are hardline.  Ink does not have alcohol. It is made from natural colorants and water. to keep it "non-toxic".

If You feel I am wrong on anything I said...Let me know about it.

TO THE PEOPLE THAT ASKED IF THERE WAS ALCOHOL IN TATTOO INK.  I FOUND THIS WHEN I SEARCHED ON GOOGLE.

"Among the safest and most common ingredients used to make the liquid are:

ethyl alcohol (ethanol)
purified water
witch hazel
Listerine
propylene glycol
glycerine (glycerol)"

So seems there is alcohol in tattoo ink.  Anyone able to completely confirm this?

promiscuous sex, including pornography, poisons your mind. sex becomes an addiction instead of it being an expression of love.
sXe tats are cool to look at, but i wouldn't get one. no "real" reason other than i don't want one.

The kind of toxins you are talking about are those than can impare and alter our judgement. These kinds of things include drugs and alcool. Tattoos are not a dangerous posion, but a way to celebrate the descisions we have made, or plan to make, in life.

The basic rules of Straight Edge are simple,

No drinking.
No drugs.
No casual sex.

"Casual sex" implying anyone that you are not comitted to. Someone you love and trust with your heart and soul before your body. This sense playing into Straigh Edge as another celebration of our body.

You don't have to be religious or vegan to be Straight Edge. These are seperate things that are often associated with sXe because of the imposed purity of them.

Hey. I had never even heard of sXe until a few weeks ago, but when I looked it up I realized it fits me fairly well. I have never drank, smoked, or done drugs of any type, and have no intention of doing so. I think sXe is a matter of personal choice, defined as you see it, whatever makes you happy. If you want a tat to commemorate your lifestyle, then I say go for it!

Tattoos do not violate any aspect of the Straight Edge lifestyle; end of story. Straight Edge does not mean you regard your body as a "temple" it merely means you have set certain values for yourself which you have decided to live by forever. It is not a label - it is just a name for the act of abstaining from such things as alcohol, drugs, smoking, and promiscuous sex. The latter being quite debatable I, personally, disagree with the aspect of "NO casual sex", that reasoning is flawed in many aspects - casual oral sex is perfectly fine, but sexual intercourse is prohibited? Other than the obvious reasoning that they are two different severities; they are no different. Sometimes it is taken too extreme, to the person whom mentioned that he is unsure about getting a tattoo because some ink contains alcohol - that's ridiculous. You're not intoxicating yourself, do you not use rubbing alcohol to sanitize your wounds? Another issue I would like to comment on is the fact of people abstaining from medicinal drugs; you chose the Straight Edge lifestyle so that you can live a life without harming yourself but yet when you have an injury or illness which requires medicine you refuse? That is severely flawed logic. That illness/injury will cause you much more harm than the medicine which is used to help you.
