The cam sensor on my 1996 Plymouth Breeze
has failed again.  This will be the third
time in 3 years this sensor will be replaced.
What could be making this sensor go bad in
less than a year?  Is this a known defect?

Perhaps there is excess voltage in the entire system, meaning excess discharge from the alternator and a poor, or lack of compensating resistor somewhere.  I would also replace the appropriate relay.  They are alot cheaper.

Are you replacing the sensor with OEM parts or aftermarket?  Sometimes this can make a difference with reoccuring problems.

Could be a faulty voltage regulator that sends surges to the sensor.

Replace the connector for the crank sensor. Mine failed twice in 2 weeks time.  It was moisture getting into the wires at the connector and shorting it out.
