I'd like to install a Heat Pump for our swimming pool. The one I am considering is a 5hp 220V 95,000 BTU unit. The specs state 208/230-1-60 (Volts-Ph-Hz) 50 Breaker amps. I just had a local electrician come by to give me an estimate, and I almost fell over when he said $600-$700 dollars. Granted the location of the unit will wind up being close to 100' from my service box, since it's on the opposite side of where my service box is. He said that he would use "UF" rated wire (can't remember what gauge) and bury it along the side of my foundation, up until a point underneath our attached screened porch. Then he would staple the remaining length along the joist that also runs under the pool deck. It doesn't seem too labor intensive, so I'd like to run the wire myself from the unit all the way to my box, and then have an electrician wire it into my panel. My question is; what gauge wire should I buy for this run?

Thanks in advance, Mike
