My daughter has a 98 Neon that has developed what I think is shudder?  Serious side to side vibration, movement while accelerating between 20 and 40 mph.  I checked the fluid, it looked clean, but was about a pint low.  I know using the wrong fluid will cause this, but I don't think the fluid has ever been changed. I intend to change the fluid and filter this weekend, will this help or am I wasting my time??  Anybody know a fix?  Your help is appreciated!

Go ahead with changing the oil if you never had before, but it wont fix the problem.

Side to side vibration usually comes from bent rims, tires that have never been rotated, or possibly warped rotors.  But none of these happen strickly under acceleration.  A bad CV joint in your axle could cause it.  You may want to check under the car and see if you have any split or torn CV boots.  They are located at each end of your drive axles that go from the transmission to the wheels.

I have a 98 Neon that is lowered... I recently started getting this shutter on the left front side whenever I am between 35-40mph. I know my CV joints need to be replaced as is..because they pop when I make a complete hard turn. Is this also the cause of this shutter? my rotors aren't warped, they do have some stress grooves in them, but not warped.. I also just had new tires put on.  Just hoping it's not the tranny. I replaced one already... but need to know for sure.. since this tranny is under warranty and if it is the cause then I will get a new one for free including labor.
