To help you determine these I'll give you the stages of heat and the varying lengths of them. Most dogs go with the average lengths so I'll give you that too.
1.Proestrus the female is going into heat but will not accept male yet. average=9days, vary= 1-17 days.
2.Estrus The dog is now in heat and will accept male. Average=9days, vary=3-21 days
3.Pregnancy lasts 58-66 days
4.signs of going into heat are 1. swelling of the vulva. 2. bloody discharge (milky, red, or between in color). 3. Possible increase in urine. 4. If she is in a pen she will try more aggressively to get out.(also you may watch a males behavior around her) Hope that helps!

Dog usually tends to be different. Signs such as an increase in vulva. Constantly licking the vulva, and sleepiness. Eating disorder and tends to get your attention more. Need to buy dog diapers, and clean daily. This is a way to care for your pet!

I  know the stages of dogs in heat, but what about behavioral changes? I woke up this morning and my dog was howling, I took her outside and she seemed restless and irritable. When I tried to go back inside she jumped in front of me and was whimpering. Are these behavioral changes common during the heat of the dog?
