I NOTICE THAT MY DACHSHUND AS WELL AS MY FRIEND'S MINIATURE DACHSHUND TEND TO LICK ALL THE TIME. I KNOW THAT THEY GIVE LOTS OF KISSES, BUT MY DOG CONSTANTLY LICKS YOU. WHY IS THIS?

I'm glad to know my mini-doxie, Souxie, (aka "The Anteater"!!!) isn't unique!  She certainly seems to have an "oral fixation".  Yep!  She's a kisser!  In the last month or so, she's discovered her toy jingle balls.  She's NUTS for one in particular and has taken to carrying it everwhere with her (and constantly begging me to throw it or hide it for her to find).  Since becoming ball-fixated, it's seemed to help her "displace" the licking habit.  Plus, it certainly keeps her active.  (She's also recently become fixated on her "big sister's" (a Jack Russell terrier) dog tags, which she'll happily lap at for hours, or as long as my JRT will tolerate it.  I've come to believe that mini-doxies probably have a tendency towards being a little neurotic or tic-y, (as opposed to the out-right nervousness seen often in smaller dogs). But both my dogs seem a bit neurotic, so it could just be me.....!  I find that now that she's found her "purpose" in life (in her mind - chasing down that green jingle-ball!), she seems much more focused, calm and centered.  So, I highly recommend finding something for your dog to be "good at" - try things along the lines of whatever "purpose" his or her breed was originally intended for.  With Souxie, she LOVES to "dig" her ball out from within a wadded up old towel, or from under the blankets - definitely that dachshund burrow-and-find instinct at work!  Good luck!  - cathi

My dachshund also licks - everything in sight.  My vet says that this is a symptom of allergies.

Well I have a girl Dachshund and she's the same as all of your's... see dachshund's are notorious for kissing... they believe it's their right to kiss you directly in the face(specially the mouth) and nowhere else... unlike many other dogs who will kiss you anywhere...

My 5 month old doxie also wants to lick all the time everything, everyone, which at first was kind of cute, but recently she has developed the horrid doxie breath, which obviously leaves her kisses to be less desired.

Dachshunds are known to keep themselves clean like a cat. They lick themselves to do this.

my almost 10 month old mini, will lick others passively, but when she can get to my face she goes bonkers. It's rather odd. First thing every morning when my alarm goes off she is at it. why why why?

My have two miniature dachshunds that spend a great deal of time licking.  Especially  each other.  One of them lick everything all day long. The floor, the furniture, the bed..us!  Everything, all the time!
