My 4cyl,16v, 2litr, auto 92' passat timing belt broke while driving at 65mph. Heard no sound of grinding or thud,at the time, none. Do not know if engine is interferance or free wheeling. Not listed as interferance engine. Repair man(not reputable), says there was a leak down when compresssion tested & suggested taking cylinder head off to see damage extent,-I declined. I suspect there might have been existing cylinder gasket leak. How can I diagnose without digging further?  I appreciate any feedback.
thanks a lot.
