Why is my 6 month old male dobe pooping 6x a day (4 of them...

Why is my 6 month old male dobe pooping 6x a day (4 of them in his crate during the day)? I feed him 3 cups in the am and the same in the pm. The vet said as much as he wants but I can't do that to him. He is healthy though. We keep him in the crate during the day while we are at work then out to go outside when we get home and then back in at night.
