Okay are you stupid or 12? You'd have to be a complete moron or WAY too young to get a tattoo to be considering doing it on yourself. If you're young, wait, you'll probably realize what you want to immortalize in flesh isn't all that great years from now. And if you're old enough, go to a respected artist. It might cost more than ink and a needle but the art will look much better and you have less chance of having a nasty infection.

I agree with u angelXwithXbloodyXknuckles I have done it and paid the price.... That was a while ago now. YES goto a respected artist and get it done properly. The advantages of an artist is that they have the proper equiptment and they dont have to get in an awkward position to do it hehe.

I just gave myself a perfect replica of tupac shakurs cross on my left ankle, and it looks excellent. Tattooing yourself is just a way of mixing pain and pleasure. Almost like giving yourself piercings. Just don't do something you will regret ten years from now.

Use Bic ink, It won't blead as much and its actually cleaner. I gave myself the veritas aequtas tattoos a few months ago. No infection. No long term pain. And it looks just like the ones in the Boondock Saints.

The Boondock Saints have hella cool tattoos.
im working on giving myself one, that’s how i ended up here.  and i must agree with "Weener boy" on his points about pain and pleasure, its mush more personal and worth a lot more to you if you do it yourself, im doing mine so i will be able to keep a promise to a very close friend of mine.

as long as you keep the needle sterile it shouldn't cause an infection make sure to clean it with something like bactine since alcohol has some effect on it that is warned against i forgot what peroxide can bleach it partially and make it come out weird. use a large sharp safety pin small once are flimsy and might bend or kink when your working and might go in too far or sideways ans if its too dull it might not get past the epidermis and it will come off with your dead skin safety pin tattoos tend to carry a bit more pride you feel better about it if you do it your self more likely just like anything else some might think differently but thats only a trait caused by an over sheltered and modernized society that is stunting its own evolution the more modernized and unnatural you are the closer you are to extinction

About two weeks ago, I burnt my name into my leg by heating a needle over a fire and then got a needle, and I dug out the skin where it had blistered. It is still here, but do you think it will last for awhile?  Also, I forgot to sterilize the needle, do you think I could get an infection, if so, I'm only 15, do you think I should let my parents know?

E-Zee,
If you've no signs of infection now, you are likely free and clear. As for the permanence, it is dependent on so many variables that I couldn't rightly say. I lightly did one in my ankle once that stayed, and repeatedly and intensely carved one into my hand that has vanished. My only real suggestion is that you do none that pertain to any other person specifically, as those tend to be regretted. I'm currently planning to burn one off with lye, which doesn't exactly sound fun. Anyways... there's my answer.

i think you should do what you want and not listen to other people. The week before i got my lip pierced i did three stars on my neck through a mirror, though ive grew up around tattoo artist, it still was alot better to me than getting it done professionally, you feel like your in charge..Its alot less painful cause your know your limits.

Hey i did my own tattoo of a blue star on my right ankle on the top of the bone stickin out..know what part i mean?..anyways...i used just a regular sewing needle and some blue ink from a blue pen..all i did was burn the end of the needle to disinfect it ..and i blew the ink out of the pin onto a piece of cardboard..then i just dipped the needle in the ink and just kinda stabbed it into my skin...to me it didn't hurt...and before hand you need to outline your tattoo before you start...just so you wont mess up..yes i did bleed in some spots but it totally didn't hurt...but i didn't wash all the extra ink off till the next day...i left it there till it was good and soaked in under the skin..when the skin heals the ink will be under your skin so the color lasts longer...but ive had the blue star on my ankle for about 2 years...ive done like two touch ups.. but thats it...i thought it was pretty cool...the hard part was just tryin to figure out what i wanted a tattoo of ..but since my last name is "Starr"..i decided to do a star...and its totally cool to use colored ink...well happy tattooing!!!

Hey, I don't know if this msg board is still active, but what kind of ink works best? I tried to do a spiderweb on my left ankle with food colouring and it washed out. Also, how long do I have to keep it protected, how deep do I have to "stab" myself, etc...? Also, any tips so it doesn't get infected?

Thanks!

Hello ppl!!
Hey all..I see at you talk about tattooing yourself here..Well many tattoo artist's complains and yell at you dont should do it and dont build your own tattoo machines but the most of them started with just a homebuild machine and "tagged" their friend's and so...I have done many tattoos self with a homemade machine when i started to tattoo people and that grove and now have i real equipment's and have it as a part time job...So what i want to say here are dont be afraid to try BUT try with clean things.....

India ink? I'll have to try that if this doesn't stay...(I re-inked it last night with ink from a bic pen) It seems to be okay so far, though.

Just wondering how long I have to keep it covered up? People keep asking why I have a bandage on my leg, and I am reluctant to tell them I got a tat if it doesn't end up working out.

Thanks for your help!!

India ink contains poison. It probably won't kill you but it can make you extremely ill. It can also prevent you from having children or cause birth defects in the kids you do have.

I'm determined...someone tell me EVERYTHING...like,what kind of ink (my dad has India ink and warns the hell out of me...)won't kill me and how to cover it up...and stuff like that...the basics...PLEASE!

by re-inked I mean that I touched it up...anyhoo. The ink from the bic pen only stayed in some places, so I now have spiderweb-shaped scar on my left calf...What ink should I use? food colouring doesn't stay and neither does pen ink. My friend said she used India Ink and got a really bad infection...

I, too, am determined to get a tat and I want to do it myself, so if anybody knows what kind of ink works best, how long I have to cover it up, etc, please let me know!

Thanks.

the BIC ink only stayed in a few places the first time i did it, last night, and it was really runny. then this morning i used day-old ink and it seems to be staying better. I'll let y'all know. it helps that i can compare the pain of times when it stayed and didnt...maybe that's the key..try and try until you get it right~

well, we're both new at it, and until we get some decent advice, it's trial and error. i did it last night (same heart, same hand, same place)with pink ink, and i think it stayed, but the dots were very spread out. i just redid it, and instead of leaving it open, i covered it with one of those round band aids that have the stickiness on all sides, so it won't come off. I'vedecided to leave it alone for like, four days, then I'llwash it and see what happened. if that doesn't work, I'llhave to wait a while because it's really hurting to do the same thing over and over again for the fifth time in a row. i really think it would be cool for it to stay, and i want to tell all my friends, but i don't want to tell them if it won't stay, you know? how old are you, miss_bittersweet?

well, when i did mine, i didn't go that far...i used fire and rubbing alcohol but i didn't use a safety pin, b/c thats huge and I'ma wimp (who doesn't like needles...)but i did mine five times (once a day for five days) and now i think i finally have it. i cant explain why it's puffy...is it REALLY puffy or like, oh, thats a lil puffy, b/c i went to school today and my friends were like, it looks puffy, but it wasn't really...i've decided that it's too painful to do again tonight if it needs more touching up, so i'mgoing to give it another week before i do any more damage. my advice to you, Zarboz, is if you can, go to the doctor immediately. if you're under 18 like me, and scared to death to tell your parents, wait it out...use rubbing alcohol to clean the place daily. if you used India ink, i would recommend telling your parents, or going to the doctor RIGHT now...thats really poisonous, and if you are trying it for the first time, you could have done serious damage. let me know how things work out, and don't make my opinion your opinion, use your own judgment about whats going on.

well, see i have the opposite problem, miss_bittersweet. i didn't mind telling my friends before i knew for sure, i was going to make it happen no matter what. when i told some of them, however, they were like, "idiot" and one of my friends said "steph..." in her, 'I'mso disappointed in you' voice of doom, so, yeah that kind of sucks. my other, cooler friends were good with it, though. I'm14. as of now I'mwaiting for the final bit of extra ink to come off...people keep saying "i don't see a heart, but i see a big pink blob" well, I'llshow them!
now, Zarboz,
what kind of ink did you use? did you let the safety pin go too far into the skin? how many did you give yourself? hold old are you? did you clean the skin before you did the tattoo? let me know so i can help you (with my experienced wisdom ;))

Please clean any area to be tattoed with alcohol. (Rubbing, not drinking) Do not leave the tatoo covered for more than one to three hours, it has to have air to heal properly and retain the ink as well. You should try a google search to see what type of ink to use. When I got my tattoo (professionaly) it did not bleed and certainly did not go anywhere close to 1/2 inch deep. The only thing I can tell you about the ink is that it was much, much thinner than the inks you have discussed (i.e. Bic). As you have been warned DO NOT use India Ink, it is toxic and does cause infertility and birth defects! Good Luck.
P.S. My tattoo has not faded any and I've had it over 10 yrs. Try a professional.

Well, I'm new at this whole self-tattooing thing, but your method sounds painful...*shudders*

As for your question...I doubt you will die. If it was unsterilized you might get an infection, but that would probably be it. It depends on the brand of ink, because all companies are slightly different, but I doubt it is any more toxic than bic ink or a sharpie, which is what most people on this board seems to have used.

My suggestion is that if it gets worse (i.e, turns a funny colour and is oozing a strange substance) to talk to your doctor...

ANYWAYS!!!
i don't know that a staple would do much piercage (yes, it's a real word! i made it up 5.5 seconds ago!)...of the skin...i mean i guess it would work, but it does seem REALLY painful and creepy...hehe. OK, well like miss_bittersweet was saying, it wont cause you to die (i thought the EXACT same thing after i did mine, i was like, "please, lord...if you like me, could i stay here a little longer??" but now I'mok... so yeah, you might get an infection, but definitely not die! let me know how it worked! we're always looking for new and better ways!

hello all, i see that this q&a has been going on a while.  i'm 21 and have a number of tattoos that were professionally done.  now i understand that you are not old enough to go and do this yourself but you must consider why this is the case.  tattoos are definately cool but i don't think that you appreciate what your doing. you're tattoing your hand?!? are you crazy, it is actually against the law for a tattoo artist to tattoo your hands, do you not think that there must be damn good reasons for this?i understand that this isn't going to stop you, believe it or not i'mnot trying to stop you, i want you to understand. it took me a long time to decide what to have tattooed permanently onto my body.  I wanted tattoos when i was 14 and 15 but my ideas then were VERY VERY different to what i actually got done. you'll probably ignore me completely though, i know that i would if i wasn't me. at the end of the day please, please, just be careful

While I see where you're coming from, element, I'd just like to point out that laws regarding tattoos differ from place to place. Where I live, it is not against the law for your hands to be tattooed.

You shouldn't go too deep - if you bleed, that's too deep. When I did it, I sort of scratched myself as opposed to making actual dots. Once you're done, cover it up for a couple hours. after you uncover it, DO NOT WASH OFF THE EXTRA INK YET. I left the extra ink on for about eight hours before washing it off.

I'm just new at this, but I used that method for my tat and it seems to have worked...

Hey everybody, I am just wondering if any of you have tried a really sharp exacto blade, if it is really sharp, it doesn't hurt, and it creates a more defined line.  I also think that safety pins are really big and kinda sloppy, I did use one for a tattoo once, and it was kinda ugly.  So is what I do is, I clean everything with alcohol, then I get the exacto or needle covered in ink, and poke.  It kinda works, but what do all of you guys do exactly, I want to refine my technique.  Thanks

well, i dont really know that my deal worked...my heart isnt visible all the time! i'llbe at school and see this cute, simi-pink heart, then sitting here at home, i see NOTHING! i dont know whats up with that, but whatever! i have a bruise on my hand, though, under the heart...i dont know what's up with that, either. how did the spiderweb go? how long has it been since you did it last? ok, i take it back, i see a simi heart while sitting here...hehe!

my spiderweb seems to be okay...I touched it up yesterday afternoon, just in a couple places where the ink didn't really set. It seems to be staying for now, but I don't know what's going to happen in the summer. I imagine that chlorine and sun will fade the ink...

I mean, sure mine don't look as good, but the sense of pride behind them makes up for it. Um, thats about it, bye! (if anyone wants to ask me anything or chat IM me anytime! ok you weird children everything eventully will make u sick and die from cancer so get used to it and what the brave ones are doing is called scarification  wrong but anyways that is like getting a razor blade cutting your self let it like heal then peel the scab and then put the Indian ink on then put a band-aid

ok, to nikki, what ever you said didn't make one bit of since to me...you like, used one sentence to get five points across.
to steph (because that wasn't me)if you were to do the poking through the paper, you would loose the ink onto the paper. practice, practice, PRACTICE drawing the design on paper, then when you get it down, draw it onto your skin, then do the tattoo. another way you could do it is to use a cutting board and an exacto to cut the design out of the computer paper, then tape it to your ankle and tattoo in the hole...do you get that?
let me know if you didn't understand anything!

The best way to describe it is to "firmly scratch" your skin, if you understand what I mean...

My spiderweb is partially there...I think my problem is that the ink is washing or fading out before the skin completely heals over. Hmm....

hey everyone!! like daniel said a gun hurts alot less than a plain needle. i made a gun and gave myself a tattoo all around my ankle. that was 5 years ago and it still looks like it did a week after it was healed. i didnt know about india ink being toxic and that is what i used. didnt get sick ar anything. if you go to thy dyi network-do it yourself- they lay it all out for you to follow. just remember to be clean about it. i buy actual tattoo needles. they arnt very expensive and are awsome for shading. good luck everybody.

I did three dollar signs and a cross on my own like four years ago using India ink... No infection just a hell of a lot of ink all over the place.  Then i went to the tattoo shop and got another cross on my arm and two on my neck and it was a LOT easier... i am all for the self tattooing scene but the ones done professionally tend to be a lot better.

an easy way to get a desing on to your skin is to take the picture you want an trace it on to tracing paper an then go over the picture on the tracing paper till it is dark use ink an go over it on both sides of the paper then put clear deodorant on ur skin then lay the picture over the spot of deoderant then rub more deodorant over the back of the picture an then peal it off an the picture will be there

whoa, this is funny and crazy at the same time. Most of y'all are what 12-15, LOL, damn, well let me just tell y'all that my boyfriend(professional tat artist)saids indian ink is the worst ink you can use, a gun would hurt less than plain needle, you should not use "bic" because is not as thin as tat ink, buy tat ink is not that expensive, and as for the "Stabbing" LOL...Crazy kids! even if you use a needle
-which you shouldn't- you should never stab, you can really hurt yourselves that way, just slightly scratch the surface of the skin. B4 i got with him i used to do my own tat and i never did have the stuff you guys say, and mine are still bright and infection free. But lucky me i get professional work for free! hehehe! take care guys seriously, be careful, don't hurt yourselves! if you have any questions I'll be more than happy to ask my man, and help you guys! later dudes!

Hello! Just thought I'd contribute my little story: When I was about 15 I wanted a tattoo and, much like you guys, I did it myself (on the ankle) with a safety pin and Bic ink. Apparently I didn't do it right, because the blue heart is gone. But, hey, it was cool while it lasted. I'm 21 now, and about to get a *real* tattoo, but I'm just here to say that trying to do your own tattoos isn't stupid. Experimentation is good thing. The art of tattooing wouldn't be here at all if nobody tried it out way back when.

Anyway, if you guys are looking for tattoo gun plans, try here: http://www.diy-auction.com/diy/  under Piercing and Aftercare, or do a search for it there.

bwa haha this sounds sooooo simple!! why the hell am i doing it this other, much more complicated way?
ok, listen up!! this is the crest spinbrush pro version!
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
so you want a tat gun but yer #*@!in stupid and cant make one. heres a simple solution. buy a crest spinbrushpro[listen buy the #*@!in pro with the removable head orelse yer gunna be fiddle #*@!in around all day]. remove the head of the brush. now look down the shaft and turn it on. you should see a blunt metal object going up and down #*@!in fast. expose the metal object[this means all you dum #*@!s saw off the shaft the thing that shelters the metal object]. now heat an eraser up until its a little stiff. put it as centered as possible on the metal object. put a needle in the eraser off center and wahla. you can also put super glue on the part of the needle where it sticks in the eraser to keep the needle from jumpin al over and #*@!in yer tat up

now, keep in mind i got this from a website, and i didnt put the #*@! even though you can obviousally get the idea!! whoo hoo! if my tattoo gun doesnt work, i'mso doing it this way!

Well all, lots of people say use india ink lots of people say don't use india ink. well india ink is one of the oldest types and it will stay in your skin...it will fade to a dark green but it will still look good. if you use bic pen ink, be prepared to see that it's faded to lil or nothing in a few months. now as for doin a tattoo on yourself, i'drecommend ink virgins to get it done professionaly. i love doin tattoo's to myself, it hurts more, but ya get over it. if you are to do one yourself, make it small you might want a cover up. i started with lil dime sized tattoos.

"jailhouse" tats are drawn not pierced. So what they are saying is that you can draw on your skin with india ink w/o a problem. That says nothing about poking it into your skin.

When people say stab, they're pretty much serious--the needle should go in pretty far, but not far enough to puncture any veins or cause serious damage. (With a safety pin--I'd say about 2-2.5mm)

So, i took my oral b cross action toothbrush, poped the brush off, got a small piece of the glue (gel like) used on glue guns, went to the kitchen heated the iron piece on the toothbrush inserted the piece of "hard" glue and it stayed like hell, burned the needle, to heated up and it could be placed on the toothbrush, then burned the needle again to sterilize, turn on some loud linkin' park and tattoo my way into a beautiful butterfly on the inside of my left ankle, i did it 3 days ago, no pain no fade, yet. I think this is why it doesn't hurt like hell like it does for others, because the crossaction toothbrush doesn't move a around in a crazy manner or up and down like a real tat gun would. This one move sideways, making it easy for you to scratch ina friendly manner a little below the surface of your skin. My friend actually try this about a couple of months ago and hers was not faded or nasty looking, so i did it, and so far so good, so i think this is a good way to go, if you want, if you dont, i really dont care!

i used a thin like...beading needle to do my tat...i used india ink...it isn't poisinous...i lit a candle dunked the needle in the wax...that makes the ink stick to the needle better so u don't have to dunk so much...then went on stabin...i went over it 3 times to make it darker...looks pretty good...better than some of my friends tats that they paid 100-200 bucks for...

i have a total of 9 tattoos on my arm that i did with india ink about a yr ago they still look good , and i plan to do more.I took a walkman tape playerpulled out the motor atacted it to a spoon with the scoop of it bent down. The needle was made out of the spring from a bic lighter. Took a pen gott all the ink out of the shaft. to guid the needle.best to use a ball point pen just poke the ball out of the tip of it. Atached the needle to the motor be a little gear from inside the tape player. melted a screw into it so i could adjust the depth of the needle. Hooked it all to a home made foot pedle , and hooked it all to a 12 volt cell phone charger. Played some hard ass music and went to town. And ive had some of my friends want some work done. So i must have done some trhing right or else i wouldnt have the responces i got.  So yes you can do it. Just dont be dumb with what you put on your bodyand you wont regret it.

Aloha, one and all...

Just thought I'd give an update on my progress...

The safety pin and bic ink/india ink/sharpie marker didn't quite work for me...the ink didn't stay and I now have a VERY visible spiderweb shaped scar on my left leg. Not sure what I'm going to tell my parents when they see me in shorts in the summer and ask about it...

However, I am a very persistent person and I am going to try the spinbrush type as soon as I have money and it gets warm enough for me to walk over to the drugstore. It is possible I'll bribe my friends to let me practise on them this time, though.

If anybody makes any real progress, please post!

hey ppl. do not use bic ink!!!
this works and i have done it:
if you have those black rubber bracelet thingys called o-rings from trucks, take a SOFT RUBBER green one and burn it until it goes really black and hard. eventually if you have burnt it enough, you will be able to crush it into a powder. add some water until it gets to a runny ink consistency.
do your tattoo design with this. it works. i get paid to tattoo ppl at college. i have done my own tattoos like this, as well as having a professional butterfly tattoo. i am sixteen and got my pro one done last year with my parents' permission (big shock), and i still prefer the om symbol on my ankle from when i was 10

well ive given myself many of "memento like" tattoos and they are all turning out fine. what i use is a needle a bic crystal pen put the needle on the end grab some scotch tape and wrap it around the needle and the pen as tight as possible burn the end of the needle til its red let it cool then i dip the end of the needle into the ink tube and just start scratchin til it bleeds. then after im done i rub more ink ontop. i let the ink dry over night then i put gauze over the area. and shave it daily. and everything works out fine. you know you'd basically have to cut off about a 6x6 inch area of skin and just pour a ton of ink on there for it to get infected.

ok so i just gave myself a tattoo and i used a basic needle and ink from a black pen.  and i waited a few hours and then removed the extra ink and i could tell only some of it stayed.  so i went over it and over it.  it really didn't hurt, only at first.  and to the dude that said a half an inch- damn!!!  no way would i do that.  Listen to  spike12291986@yahoo.com.  1/16 of an inch. scratch, don't poke.  poking can get too deep, and hurts more and looks crappy.  dont use indian ink.  i had a very close friend get very sick because of it, and most of you kids are too young to die.  and that is a stupid reason to die.  luckily, my friend told her parents and they got her help, but if u think something is wrong, and can't talk to your parents, see any responsible adult.  a teacher, counselor someone u trust.  and legally, they cannot tell ur parents what u did if u tell them not to.  just so u know.  so good luck! and don't think i'msaying don't tattoo because then i would be a hypocrite.  do it, just BE CAREFUL!!!  ok sorry i wrote too much and now i will shut up.

Hey "real tattoo artist" how much do you charge???..most likely to much for a simple tattoo...no doubt its crazy that these youngsters are tatting with "food coloring"(which you shouldnt be using...pelican ink is the best and the ink stays because of the way your penetrating the skin..not because of the ink.) but who are you to tell anyone any sh*t ..you probably drive a lexus. not everyone can afford a $100 tattoo.

hey my friend did his own tattoo with some caligraphy ink (pick it up at a craftstore) and it came out great. you take a large safety pin, wrap it in thread, then cover the thread in ink. it works great. he never got infected or anything, so i tried it. you should really practice though. a good place is the heel of your foot, you dont even feel it. and about deepness, you want to get at least to the second layer of skin. if you dont it will fade. if you have any more questions just email me or IM me at andrew_emmarson@yahoo.com

the best ink is caligraphy ink that you get at a craft store. i have used it on all of mine and they are great. you dont even have to let the ink set in, you can wipe it away instantly. and Bedake, that needle wont work correctly, it is more like to put the ink into the bloodstream, because 12 gauge is too big.

I got a tat from my friend using bic ink as most of you have tried, it worked well and did not fade. You just have to make sure you poke a lot, I got a small nautical star on my arm it took about 30 mins, try outlining your design 1st then working your way in. Remember you cant poke to much it will just add more color. But dont poke to deep ! If bleeding occurs like it did to me its a good sign that its going in, but you dont want to be bleeding a lot. Im not talking about gushing blood im talking about a lil drop of blood if more then that comes out I would stop immediately and wash with soap and water

I totally understand wanting to do all this to yourselves. But, seriously, is this really smart? And, if you say who cares, YOU SHOULD. It's your body but if you want it go to someone who knows what they're doing. You all mention trying different things over and over till it gets right. GET IT PROFESSIONALLY DONE- its a one time thing.

Seriously think about it before you get a tattoo.  I got a tattoo when I was 22, it's a very pretty tattoo, nicely done.  I can't cover it up all the time, and it has caused some problems in my life.  I'm 33 now, and a professional which I never dreamed I would be.  There are tons of situations where it's not cool at all.  I'm not against tattoos, just you kids think about your future, tons of situations.  My husband's mother gave me hell all the time because I had a tattoo.  At work and work-related functions.  A large number of people that matter in my life for whatever reason, family, my job, my son's school, look down on people with tattoos.  Even though I don't agree or like it, those people affect my every day life.  Try to get tattoos that you can show off when  you want and cover up when it's "inappropriate."  Be safe guys!

I don't think it's wise to do the food coloring thing or any kind of ink for that matter too many things can go wrong with a unsteril needle and ink, first of all,India ink(man made} will fade in about two or three years and being alcohol based it can easily get really infected depending on the skin and you kinda have to really push it in to get it to stay{ouch} LOL-however Indian ink{natural} can last a life time ,IF DONE CORRECTLY...i'm not saying it's a good idea...i'm 27 yrsold and I'mstill perfecting and honing my skill i do at least ten to twelve tattoos a week and i see all kinds of "jail house style" tattoos that they or there buddies did when they where about 15 but most artist{me included} like it when people do there own tattoos it makes business for us down the road. tattooing takes years of practice and a lifetime to perfect. so if you still wanna do it make sure it's something you can cover up easily

hey um i was reading on how to dos and dont's of homemade tattoos and i used a BIC Dark Blue ink pen and a regular sowing needle. I have had it for maybe an hour and it hasn't been budged it anything that i have tried to put on it and i wiped the excess ink off as soon as i did it. I put a quarter size star on my ankle and no pain. use dots the scratches go away i know from past experiences. oh and baby oil helps get the excess ink off.

I've done tattooing with homemade ink from burned plastic and shampoo to india ink for 10 yrs in prison and was one of the best in the system!!!  Still even though I personally like the single needle look and shading and do just as good with homemade tools and ink as some so cqalled pro's outta a shop>  I would save and get a real tattoo from a expert with the style I like not just a"tattoo" only because I know that a tattoo is forever and  some tattoos i do are near perfect I know a couple years later they'll start to spread and loose the detail. but you get what you pay for.

Hey, i  just did a tattoo on my thigh yesterday, kinda a semi outline of a les paul and it looks really good, just needs touching up a few more times because i just used a sewing needle.  I used bic ink, but i was wondering if that would stay very long.  Is burned plastic better than bic ink? Anyone know the difference?

i'mjust about to give myself a tattoo, this board really helped me out alot. i already have a tat i gave myself about a year ago but it's really faded. but when i did it i didnt even do any research or anything. the method i'mgoing to use this time is scratching myself with a needle (sterilized) until i bleed a little (just to know i broke the skin) then carefully putting ink into the cut.  then i'lljust bandage it and not wash off the excess ink until i think the skins a little grown over. my friend did this 3 years ago and it's still there. good luck everyone!

I want to thank you ppl for your sharing your advice, expiriances , and warnings. I've been wanting to do a tat on myself for a while(I belive self-made tats are more personal and special), but I didn't know where to begin or what to do . I think I'll just use a safety pin and pen ink. Does green ink show or does the color of the ink really not matter????...I'm doing a shamrock :D, I'm doing it as soon as i get some feed back, so feel free to email me with any tips / alley_girl77@yahoo.com

AlleyTheRuler,
i don't think it really matters what color the ink is, it just depends on how long you want it to stay. I recomend outlining it in black for a more promising finish...where are you putting it, by the way?

Since I am a Professional Piercer in a well established Body Art Shop, I get to see lots of ppl come in with childhood or self done tats, and the same ole question: CAN YOU FIX THIS OR COVER IT UP?  You want something special to you?  Write, draw, or scribble it yourself and have a Pro actually do it right the first time around.

it's Regardless wether a pro does it or not!
I mean obviously wether your a talented artist or not, its much easier for someone to tattoo you than you tattoo yourself..
Ive got a fair few tats n piercings, all of my ears i did myself with a gun. And Most of my stomach i did myself, all having meaning. But saying that, i didnt use a gun for them, jus a needle, bic and a lighter..
And compared to my tats that where done at my friends shop. theres not much diffrence. So it's just the luck of the draw wether it stays or fades.. But always be clean, Otherwise you will end up with something like septasemia or something else quite nasty! Peace One

You kids are playing a dangerous game. It may not show now, but in years it will. That is why the professionals are the ones with the tattoo equipment. It is also why tattooing inks are used by the pros. The smartest thing for any of you to do would be to pay the money it cost for a professional tat that will be as brilliant 40 years from now as it was the day it was done. I have seen tats done with India ink, they will fade or look like a blob of ink in the skin. I personally think you need to grow up and wait until you are of age to decide what you want.....

Contrary to popular belief India Ink is not a bad Ink to use!!  I have use one brand for three years an never had a problem!!  I use Bombay India Ink!!  BIC ink on the other hand is not a good tattoo ink!!  India Ink was the first Tattoo ink used!!  The BIC ink is actually unsafe to use as a Tattoo ink it is toxic to the body!!  The Bombay India Ink is a non-toxic ink!!  Yes the saftey pins and sewing needles work but are best used when in a Tattoo Machine!!  I personaly make my own Machines out of home items!!  The depth the needle needs to reach is no more or less than 1 millimeter into the skin!!  Any deeper into the skin and it will cause more of a possability of infection and cause the Tattoo to not be as bright!!  I do recemend that you truly think long and hard about the tat that you want!!  I have a couple tats that I wish to remove or cover up!!  The only downside to using India Ink is the fact that it is hard to remove from the skin by lasers!!  If you would like instructions on how to make a quality homemade Tattoo Machine contact me via e-mail at jwp283@att.net with the words Tat Gun in the subject colum!!

Hey loves giveing yourself your own tattoo is a wonderful experience.  though it can be dangerous so be careful not to over do it. also dont put something that you will regret later think ahead.

i was drunk and had a girlfriend carv a mutant face into my ankle... yeah good old days anyway i have re done it several times recently i re opened it and put indian ink well ink inside and got an intresting finish and i know im going to regret it later and such but it was a fun first.

i have some needles now but i use mostly razors . make sure you steralize them.

1st of all india ink is DEFINATLY not poisous. i have j.a.b.j. in cursive letters i had a friend do for me on my upper arm and it looks nasty. he did it with india ink a year ago and it still looks brand new. india ink will stay forever and is the darkest. ive done 9 tattoos an random people with a sewing needle wrapped in string so that only 1/8th of an inch of the needle actually goes in. i urned the tip of a the needle till it turned red and then dipped it in cold water. i used india ink for all the tattoos ive done and none of the people had any problems, and the tattoos still look new and its been like a year since ive done them.

hey! when I was younger I found the best way to do "slow poke" homemade tattoos without a gun was to use india ink in a syringe. you apply enough presure so that the needle is dripping just a bit from the end, and it will keep dripping for a few seconds, then you basically just poke away, but it puts the ink in really well, plus syringes are nice and sharp, I have a feeling alot of you arnt peircing deep enough. anyways have fun kiddies.

I have just done loads of tattoos. I gave my self my daughters initials on my arm. I used a sewing needle and dipped it into gel pen ink. they are great and really dark. I had no problems. does anyone know where I can buy some proper ink from? the only bad thing about using gel pen ink is well my mate used this ink and his tattoo went green after about 2 years. oh yea don't ever use ink out of a printer cause it fades with in a week.

all i did for my two tattoos is put ink from a pen on my skin in the shape i wanted it and then poked myself many and many of times in the spot with the ink and it stayed perfect.  i think the people who say pen ink doesnt work are just scared that it'll hurt but it doesnt at all...but it does bleed just to warn you.  i have a star on the under part of my forearm and a peace/ equality sign on my thumb.  they stay...and didnt get infeccted.  plus i like to look at it and know i did it and not some stranger.  its more rewording that way

Its not bad, you can get an infection, but if u STERALIZE THE NEEDLE, like your saposed to you should be fine. GO to a pro (recomended) or you can to it yourself, just be careful

hi, i just did my tattoo two days ago.  i have always wanted one, but decided at fourteen, that i should do it now.  i know it sounds stupid, but i did it because i was upset and felt like being rebellious towards my parents. childish, huh?  oh well, i don't regret it, but i want to know what to use to clean everything.  i used alcohol to clean the sewing needle and my skin, and i used a permanent marker.  i poked my skin a little, then put ink on the needle and poked it again, used the needle to scratch it and put the ink over it and wiped it with alcohol (HELLA PAINFUL!!)  its still there, but when i poked and inked again in a few places, it bled a little in some places.  ummm, ... help?

I can't believe the people here commenting on India ink and how it's toxic. It's a load of b/s as usual I have had a tat with India ink for 7 yrs now with no side effects. My children are fine lol in fact India ink is used by doctors which is a relatively new procedure. Study a bit before you make under educated comments pls.

http://www.endonurse.com/articles/271feat5.html

http://www.goaskalice.columbia.edu/1204.html

There are plenty more professional sources that would agree with me but I choose not to waste my time. :)

And to all that reads this a tat is for life what looks cool at 16, 17, 18 may not be appealing at 65. It something that should be thought about hard before you go ahead and do it.

Yes you can use india ink I have done it multiple times but thats different but I would agree with most go to a Respected artist unless you know what your doing with the needle and hand skill dont do it either that or build a home made tattoo gun but believe me if you can go to a respected tattoo artist it may cost more but its worth it also on that fact you cant do as much detail with the needle and hand as you can with a tattoo gun and also if you dont know what your doing there will be very small but to a person who knows tattoos visible skin spaces in the tattoo and if you want a tattoo that bad you depending on the state you can get a tatto when your 16 and it also depens on the artist cause there are alot of artists that wont tattoo minors good luck oh yeah and dont listen to the retard telling you to use bic ink that can get infected or give you gangreen it will also give you ink poisioning and its not permenent i am currently aprentacing to be a tattoo artist

Yes you can use india ink I have done it multiple times but thats different but I would agree with most go to a Respected artist unless you know what your doing with the needle and hand skill dont do it either that or build a home made tattoo gun but believe me if you can go to a respected tattoo artist it may cost more but its worth it also on that fact you cant do as much detail with the needle and hand as you can with a tattoo gun and also if you dont know what your doing there will be very small but to a person who knows tattoos visible skin spaces in the tattoo and if you want a tattoo that bad you depending on the state you can get a tatto when your 16 and it also depens on the artist cause there are alot of artists that wont tattoo minors good luck oh yeah and dont listen to the retard telling you to use bic ink that can get infected or give you gangreen it will also give you ink poisioning and its not permenent i am currently aprentacing to be a tattoo artist oh yeah and p.s tattoo ink is just a form of india ink i have been tattooing sense i was 11 and now am 17 soon to be 18

I used India ink and my tats came out good.
dont use pen ink cause its messes up your skin bad.I have 24 homemade tats. I not proud of some of them cause they are gang related.I am only 15.I got all my tats in one year. But be careful on how you do your tats and what you get. Laters

yes, the_only_smart_one_here does make a good point, but i believe that what really matters is the moment. who cares what we will think in the future. and if you really don't like it you can get it removed. i have tattoos i did a long time ago and i don't regret them. just because you get i when your young doesn't mean you will regret it and kill yourself.

Ya man my friend gave him self a tattoo a year ago and it SUCKS! I am only 15 but at the time i was 14. And i at least had the common sense to have my friend act like my dad with a respected artist. By the way my "friend" is a well known dumbass who got kicked out of his mom's house and is either in juvee or CYA.

omiword my last post was damd long. umm, if ne1s interested in branding, get hold of a stick of incense(its thin and givs fine detail), light it, use it to draw on ur skin(apply slight pressure) and wen it scabs up, pick off the scab so it will scar nicely(it helps a lot). its longer lasting than carving it with a blade(most of my carvings have faded, even the deep ones). branding scars r cool coz they show up wen ur body gets hot or cold. wicked sick

I agree with the above i have 2 tats one on inside elbow on on ankle and both are home made gun made however even a homemade usually is not as good as a proffessional that is why they are called professionals because they know what they are doing.

I tattooed the word "BELIEVE" onto the top of my arm last week. I scratched it then put the ink in but it didnt stay so ive been retouching it since with proper medical needles and pen ink and it seems to have done the trick. Its looks alright and even if it didnt it would still mean alot to me because I did it. If you want a tattoo folks, just do it. Screw anyone else, do it for yourselves. Peace xx

Its still there and I did it about a month ago. Then today I put a name going across my thumb. I used a sewing needle and the same Bic ink. I'll tell ya if it stayed.

IM NOT RESPONSIBLE IF YOU DIE OR GET ILL SO IF YOU DO YOUR SCREWED.JUST JOKIN

I’ve personally used this so I know it works.
Things you’ll need:
bic pen (this is your tube that houses the needle)
4 or 5" section of guitar string ,second one from the smallest. ( this is your needle)
tooth brush ( this gets bent like a "7" and joins the pen to the motor)
an eraser from a pencil (this joins the shaft of the motor to the needle/guitar string)
small battery operated motor (from a "walkman" or a hand held fan)
some tape (to join everything together)

Putting the pieces together:
Take the guitar string and bend a little bit of the end down or up.
Take out the ink tube of the pen, and cut it to about a 3 or 4" length, now file down the brass tip of the pen to get the ball out, make the hole big enough to allow passage of the needle.
Insert the needle into the pen.
Now take the tooth brush and cut off the bristles making it about 4" long. Heat it up in the middle with a lighter and bend it in to a "7" and hold in place untill stiff.
Join/tape the pen needle assembly to the tooth brush.
Now take the eraser from the pencil and shove it onto the shaft of the motor, try to get it as dead center as possible. Join the pen/needle/toot brush to the motor/eraser assembly, tape the brush to the motor.
Take the bent part of the needle/guitar stirng and stick it into the eraser, IMPORTANT- the needle must be purposely OFF CENTER.
Now all that is left to do is find a power source, I used the plug-in adapter from a cd player. I guess you could hook up some batteries to a switch and then to the contacts of the motor.

IM NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR YOUR ACTIONS OR RESULTS SO YOUR SCREWED IF YOU DIE.JUST JOKIN

Its not really a good idea to give urself a tattoo because i have 8 of them right now and i regret everyone of them bcuz somewhere along the line they got messed up or they just looked really stupid. i think everyone should wait untill they are old enough to get a tattoo done by a perfessional and make sure its something you really want and something your not gonna regret in the future.

I'm 15 and gave myself a tattoo on my left ankle with a needle and bic pen. I dug down to where I was bleeding and let the ink sit covered overnight. It's been about 2 months and the wound scabbed up and the color is gone. Now there is just a faint scar with a little scabby tissue. It didn't work. Maybe if you get the needle right above the blood line it will stay but I'm not sure i am trying it tonight in the same spot.

I got my tongue pierced in November, I was planning on doing it myself. I also burnt an upside down cross into my side. It killed for a long time, and it blistered. I used a sewing needle and a lighter. Also I heated the end on a lighter and burnt myself with it. It hurt alot but it also felt really exciting. I don't think anyone should do this to themselves.. but not do it entirely. I got minor infections but it's great now. It really hurt.

I am 21. When I was 14, I did a little design with blue bic, and dug out the little holes with a needle and kind of twirled it around and then put more ink in, and you can still see it... it didn't get infected, but my
