Okay are you stupid or 12? You'd have to be a complete moron or WAY too young to get a tattoo to be considering doing it on yourself. If you're young, wait, you'll probably realize what you want to immortalize in flesh isn't all that great years from now. And if you're old enough, go to a respected artist. It might cost more than ink and a needle but the art will look much better and you have less chance of having a nasty infection.

I agree with u angelXwithXbloodyXknuckles I have done it and paid the price.... That was a while ago now. YES goto a respected artist and get it done properly. The advantages of an artist is that they have the proper equiptment and they dont have to get in an awkward position to do it hehe.

I just gave myself a perfect replica of tupac shakurs cross on my left ankle, and it looks excellent. Tattooing yourself is just a way of mixing pain and pleasure. Almost like giving yourself piercings. Just don't do something you will regret ten years from now.

Use Bic ink, It won't blead as much and its actually cleaner. I gave myself the veritas aequtas tattoos a few months ago. No infection. No long term pain. And it looks just like the ones in the Boondock Saints.

The Boondock Saints have hella cool tattoos.
im working on giving myself one, that’s how i ended up here.  and i must agree with "Weener boy" on his points about pain and pleasure, its mush more personal and worth a lot more to you if you do it yourself, im doing mine so i will be able to keep a promise to a very close friend of mine.

as long as you keep the needle sterile it shouldn't cause an infection make sure to clean it with something like bactine since alcohol has some effect on it that is warned against i forgot what peroxide can bleach it partially and make it come out weird. use a large sharp safety pin small once are flimsy and might bend or kink when your working and might go in too far or sideways ans if its too dull it might not get past the epidermis and it will come off with your dead skin safety pin tattoos tend to carry a bit more pride you feel better about it if you do it your self more likely just like anything else some might think differently but thats only a trait caused by an over sheltered and modernized society that is stunting its own evolution the more modernized and unnatural you are the closer you are to extinction

About two weeks ago, I burnt my name into my leg by heating a needle over a fire and then got a needle, and I dug out the skin where it had blistered. It is still here, but do you think it will last for awhile?  Also, I forgot to sterilize the needle, do you think I could get an infection, if so, I'm only 15, do you think I should let my parents know?

E-Zee,
If you've no signs of infection now, you are likely free and clear. As for the permanence, it is dependent on so many variables that I couldn't rightly say. I lightly did one in my ankle once that stayed, and repeatedly and intensely carved one into my hand that has vanished. My only real suggestion is that you do none that pertain to any other person specifically, as those tend to be regretted. I'm currently planning to burn one off with lye, which doesn't exactly sound fun. Anyways... there's my answer.

i think you should do what you want and not listen to other people. The week before i got my lip pierced i did three stars on my neck through a mirror, though ive grew up around tattoo artist, it still was alot better to me than getting it done professionally, you feel like your in charge..Its alot less painful cause your know your limits.

Hey i did my own tattoo of a blue star on my right ankle on the top of the bone stickin out..know what part i mean?..anyways...i used just a regular sewing needle and some blue ink from a blue pen..all i did was burn the end of the needle to disinfect it ..and i blew the ink out of the pin onto a piece of cardboard..then i just dipped the needle in the ink and just kinda stabbed it into my skin...to me it didn't hurt...and before hand you need to outline your tattoo before you start...just so you wont mess up..yes i did bleed in some spots but it totally didn't hurt...but i didn't wash all the extra ink off till the next day...i left it there till it was good and soaked in under the skin..when the skin heals the ink will be under your skin so the color lasts longer...but ive had the blue star on my ankle for about 2 years...ive done like two touch ups.. but thats it...i thought it was pretty cool...the hard part was just tryin to figure out what i wanted a tattoo of ..but since my last name is "Starr"..i decided to do a star...and its totally cool to use colored ink...well happy tattooing!!!

Hey, I don't know if this msg board is still active, but what kind of ink works best? I tried to do a spiderweb on my left ankle with food colouring and it washed out. Also, how long do I have to keep it protected, how deep do I have to "stab" myself, etc...? Also, any tips so it doesn't get infected?

Thanks!

Hello ppl!!
Hey all..I see at you talk about tattooing yourself here..Well many tattoo artist's complains and yell at you dont should do it and dont build your own tattoo machines but the most of them started with just a homebuild machine and "tagged" their friend's and so...I have done many tattoos self with a homemade machine when i started to tattoo people and that grove and now have i real equipment's and have it as a part time job...So what i want to say here are dont be afraid to try BUT try with clean things.....

India ink? I'll have to try that if this doesn't stay...(I re-inked it last night with ink from a bic pen) It seems to be okay so far, though.

Just wondering how long I have to keep it covered up? People keep asking why I have a bandage on my leg, and I am reluctant to tell them I got a tat if it doesn't end up working out.

Thanks for your help!!

India ink contains poison. It probably won't kill you but it can make you extremely ill. It can also prevent you from having children or cause birth defects in the kids you do have.

I'm determined...someone tell me EVERYTHING...like,what kind of ink (my dad has India ink and warns the hell out of me...)won't kill me and how to cover it up...and stuff like that...the basics...PLEASE!

by re-inked I mean that I touched it up...anyhoo. The ink from the bic pen only stayed in some places, so I now have spiderweb-shaped scar on my left calf...What ink should I use? food colouring doesn't stay and neither does pen ink. My friend said she used India Ink and got a really bad infection...

I, too, am determined to get a tat and I want to do it myself, so if anybody knows what kind of ink works best, how long I have to cover it up, etc, please let me know!

Thanks.

the BIC ink only stayed in a few places the first time i did it, last night, and it was really runny. then this morning i used day-old ink and it seems to be staying better. I'll let y'all know. it helps that i can compare the pain of times when it stayed and didnt...maybe that's the key..try and try until you get it right~

well, we're both new at it, and until we get some decent advice, it's trial and error. i did it last night (same heart, same hand, same place)with pink ink, and i think it stayed, but the dots were very spread out. i just redid it, and instead of leaving it open, i covered it with one of those round band aids that have the stickiness on all sides, so it won't come off. I'vedecided to leave it alone for like, four days, then I'llwash it and see what happened. if that doesn't work, I'llhave to wait a while because it's really hurting to do the same thing over and over again for the fifth time in a row. i really think it would be cool for it to stay, and i want to tell all my friends, but i don't want to tell them if it won't stay, you know? how old are you, miss_bittersweet?

well, when i did mine, i didn't go that far...i used fire and rubbing alcohol but i didn't use a safety pin, b/c thats huge and I'ma wimp (who doesn't like needles...)but i did mine five times (once a day for five days) and now i think i finally have it. i cant explain why it's puffy...is it REALLY puffy or like, oh, thats a lil puffy, b/c i went to school today and my friends were like, it looks puffy, but it wasn't really...i've decided that it's too painful to do again tonight if it needs more touching up, so i'mgoing to give it another week before i do any more damage. my advice to you, Zarboz, is if you can, go to the doctor immediately. if you're under 18 like me, and scared to death to tell your parents, wait it out...use rubbing alcohol to clean the place daily. if you used India ink, i would recommend telling your parents, or going to the doctor RIGHT now...thats really poisonous, and if you are trying it for the first time, you could have done serious damage. let me know how things work out, and don't make my opinion your opinion, use your own judgment about whats going on.

well, see i have the opposite problem, miss_bittersweet. i didn't mind telling my friends before i knew for sure, i was going to make it happen no matter what. when i told some of them, however, they were like, "idiot" and one of my friends said "steph..." in her, 'I'mso disappointed in you' voice of doom, so, yeah that kind of sucks. my other, cooler friends were good with it, though. I'm14. as of now I'mwaiting for the final bit of extra ink to come off...people keep saying "i don't see a heart, but i see a big pink blob" well, I'llshow them!
now, Zarboz,
what kind of ink did you use? did you let the safety pin go too far into the skin? how many did you give yourself? hold old are you? did you clean the skin before you did the tattoo? let me know so i can help you (with my experienced wisdom ;))

Please clean any area to be tattoed with alcohol. (Rubbing, not drinking) Do not leave the tatoo covered for more than one to three hours, it has to have air to heal properly and retain the ink as well. You should try a google search to see what type of ink to use. When I got my tattoo (professionaly) it did not bleed and certainly did not go anywhere close to 1/2 inch deep. The only thing I can tell you about the ink is that it was much, much thinner than the inks you have discussed (i.e. Bic). As you have been warned DO NOT use India Ink, it is toxic and does cause infertility and birth defects! Good Luck.
P.S. My tattoo has not faded any and I've had it over 10 yrs. Try a professional.

Well, I'm new at this whole self-tattooing thing, but your method sounds painful...*shudders*

As for your question...I doubt you will die. If it was unsterilized you might get an infection, but that would probably be it. It depends on the brand of ink, because all companies are slightly different, but I doubt it is any more toxic than bic ink or a sharpie, which is what most people on this board seems to have used.

My suggestion is that if it gets worse (i.e, turns a funny colour and is oozing a strange substance) to talk to your doctor...

ANYWAYS!!!
i don't know that a staple would do much piercage (yes, it's a real word! i made it up 5.5 seconds ago!)...of the skin...i mean i guess it would work, but it does seem REALLY painful and creepy...hehe. OK, well like miss_bittersweet was saying, it wont cause you to die (i thought the EXACT same thing after i did mine, i was like, "please, lord...if you like me, could i stay here a little longer??" but now I'mok... so yeah, you might get an infection, but definitely not die! let me know how it worked! we're always looking for new and better ways!

hello all, i see that this q&a has been going on a while.  i'm 21 and have a number of tattoos that were professionally done.  now i understand that you are not old enough to go and do this yourself but you must consider why this is the case.  tattoos are definately cool but i don't think that you appreciate what your doing. you're tattoing your hand?!? are you crazy, it is actually against the law for a tattoo artist to tattoo your hands, do you not think that there must be damn good reasons for this?i understand that this isn't going to stop you, believe it or not i'mnot trying to stop you, i want you to understand. it took me a long time to decide what to have tattooed permanently onto my body.  I wanted tattoos when i was 14 and 15 but my ideas then were VERY VERY different to what i actually got done. you'll probably ignore me completely though, i know that i would if i wasn't me. at the end of the day please, please, just be careful

While I see where you're coming from, element, I'd just like to point out that laws regarding tattoos differ from place to place. Where I live, it is not against the law for your hands to be tattooed.

You shouldn't go too deep - if you bleed, that's too deep. When I did it, I sort of scratched myself as opposed to making actual dots. Once you're done, cover it up for a couple hours. after you uncover it, DO NOT WASH OFF THE EXTRA INK YET. I left the extra ink on for about eight hours before washing it off.

I'm just new at this, but I used that method for my tat and it seems to have worked...

Hey everybody, I am just wondering if any of you have tried a really sharp exacto blade, if it is really sharp, it doesn't hurt, and it creates a more defined line.  I also think that safety pins are really big and kinda sloppy, I did use one for a tattoo once, and it was kinda ugly.  So is what I do is, I clean everything with alcohol, then I get the exacto or needle covered in ink, and poke.  It kinda works, but what do all of you guys do exactly, I want to refine my technique.  Thanks
