Okay are you stupid or 12? You'd have to be a complete moron or WAY too young to get a tattoo to be considering doing it on yourself. If you're young, wait, you'll probably realize what you want to immortalize in flesh isn't all that great years from now. And if you're old enough, go to a respected artist. It might cost more than ink and a needle but the art will look much better and you have less chance of having a nasty infection.

I agree with u angelXwithXbloodyXknuckles I have done it and paid the price.... That was a while ago now. YES goto a respected artist and get it done properly. The advantages of an artist is that they have the proper equiptment and they dont have to get in an awkward position to do it hehe.

I just gave myself a perfect replica of tupac shakurs cross on my left ankle, and it looks excellent. Tattooing yourself is just a way of mixing pain and pleasure. Almost like giving yourself piercings. Just don't do something you will regret ten years from now.

Use Bic ink, It won't blead as much and its actually cleaner. I gave myself the veritas aequtas tattoos a few months ago. No infection. No long term pain. And it looks just like the ones in the Boondock Saints.

The Boondock Saints have hella cool tattoos.
im working on giving myself one, that’s how i ended up here.  and i must agree with "Weener boy" on his points about pain and pleasure, its mush more personal and worth a lot more to you if you do it yourself, im doing mine so i will be able to keep a promise to a very close friend of mine.

as long as you keep the needle sterile it shouldn't cause an infection make sure to clean it with something like bactine since alcohol has some effect on it that is warned against i forgot what peroxide can bleach it partially and make it come out weird. use a large sharp safety pin small once are flimsy and might bend or kink when your working and might go in too far or sideways ans if its too dull it might not get past the epidermis and it will come off with your dead skin safety pin tattoos tend to carry a bit more pride you feel better about it if you do it your self more likely just like anything else some might think differently but thats only a trait caused by an over sheltered and modernized society that is stunting its own evolution the more modernized and unnatural you are the closer you are to extinction

About two weeks ago, I burnt my name into my leg by heating a needle over a fire and then got a needle, and I dug out the skin where it had blistered. It is still here, but do you think it will last for awhile?  Also, I forgot to sterilize the needle, do you think I could get an infection, if so, I'm only 15, do you think I should let my parents know?

E-Zee,
If you've no signs of infection now, you are likely free and clear. As for the permanence, it is dependent on so many variables that I couldn't rightly say. I lightly did one in my ankle once that stayed, and repeatedly and intensely carved one into my hand that has vanished. My only real suggestion is that you do none that pertain to any other person specifically, as those tend to be regretted. I'm currently planning to burn one off with lye, which doesn't exactly sound fun. Anyways... there's my answer.

i think you should do what you want and not listen to other people. The week before i got my lip pierced i did three stars on my neck through a mirror, though ive grew up around tattoo artist, it still was alot better to me than getting it done professionally, you feel like your in charge..Its alot less painful cause your know your limits.

Hey i did my own tattoo of a blue star on my right ankle on the top of the bone stickin out..know what part i mean?..anyways...i used just a regular sewing needle and some blue ink from a blue pen..all i did was burn the end of the needle to disinfect it ..and i blew the ink out of the pin onto a piece of cardboard..then i just dipped the needle in the ink and just kinda stabbed it into my skin...to me it didn't hurt...and before hand you need to outline your tattoo before you start...just so you wont mess up..yes i did bleed in some spots but it totally didn't hurt...but i didn't wash all the extra ink off till the next day...i left it there till it was good and soaked in under the skin..when the skin heals the ink will be under your skin so the color lasts longer...but ive had the blue star on my ankle for about 2 years...ive done like two touch ups.. but thats it...i thought it was pretty cool...the hard part was just tryin to figure out what i wanted a tattoo of ..but since my last name is "Starr"..i decided to do a star...and its totally cool to use colored ink...well happy tattooing!!!

Hey, I don't know if this msg board is still active, but what kind of ink works best? I tried to do a spiderweb on my left ankle with food colouring and it washed out. Also, how long do I have to keep it protected, how deep do I have to "stab" myself, etc...? Also, any tips so it doesn't get infected?

Thanks!

Hello ppl!!
Hey all..I see at you talk about tattooing yourself here..Well many tattoo artist's complains and yell at you dont should do it and dont build your own tattoo machines but the most of them started with just a homebuild machine and "tagged" their friend's and so...I have done many tattoos self with a homemade machine when i started to tattoo people and that grove and now have i real equipment's and have it as a part time job...So what i want to say here are dont be afraid to try BUT try with clean things.....

India ink? I'll have to try that if this doesn't stay...(I re-inked it last night with ink from a bic pen) It seems to be okay so far, though.

Just wondering how long I have to keep it covered up? People keep asking why I have a bandage on my leg, and I am reluctant to tell them I got a tat if it doesn't end up working out.

Thanks for your help!!

India ink contains poison. It probably won't kill you but it can make you extremely ill. It can also prevent you from having children or cause birth defects in the kids you do have.

I'm determined...someone tell me EVERYTHING...like,what kind of ink (my dad has India ink and warns the hell out of me...)won't kill me and how to cover it up...and stuff like that...the basics...PLEASE!

by re-inked I mean that I touched it up...anyhoo. The ink from the bic pen only stayed in some places, so I now have spiderweb-shaped scar on my left calf...What ink should I use? food colouring doesn't stay and neither does pen ink. My friend said she used India Ink and got a really bad infection...

I, too, am determined to get a tat and I want to do it myself, so if anybody knows what kind of ink works best, how long I have to cover it up, etc, please let me know!

Thanks.

the BIC ink only stayed in a few places the first time i did it, last night, and it was really runny. then this morning i used day-old ink and it seems to be staying better. I'll let y'all know. it helps that i can compare the pain of times when it stayed and didnt...maybe that's the key..try and try until you get it right~

well, we're both new at it, and until we get some decent advice, it's trial and error. i did it last night (same heart, same hand, same place)with pink ink, and i think it stayed, but the dots were very spread out. i just redid it, and instead of leaving it open, i covered it with one of those round band aids that have the stickiness on all sides, so it won't come off. I'vedecided to leave it alone for like, four days, then I'llwash it and see what happened. if that doesn't work, I'llhave to wait a while because it's really hurting to do the same thing over and over again for the fifth time in a row. i really think it would be cool for it to stay, and i want to tell all my friends, but i don't want to tell them if it won't stay, you know? how old are you, miss_bittersweet?

well, when i did mine, i didn't go that far...i used fire and rubbing alcohol but i didn't use a safety pin, b/c thats huge and I'ma wimp (who doesn't like needles...)but i did mine five times (once a day for five days) and now i think i finally have it. i cant explain why it's puffy...is it REALLY puffy or like, oh, thats a lil puffy, b/c i went to school today and my friends were like, it looks puffy, but it wasn't really...i've decided that it's too painful to do again tonight if it needs more touching up, so i'mgoing to give it another week before i do any more damage. my advice to you, Zarboz, is if you can, go to the doctor immediately. if you're under 18 like me, and scared to death to tell your parents, wait it out...use rubbing alcohol to clean the place daily. if you used India ink, i would recommend telling your parents, or going to the doctor RIGHT now...thats really poisonous, and if you are trying it for the first time, you could have done serious damage. let me know how things work out, and don't make my opinion your opinion, use your own judgment about whats going on.

well, see i have the opposite problem, miss_bittersweet. i didn't mind telling my friends before i knew for sure, i was going to make it happen no matter what. when i told some of them, however, they were like, "idiot" and one of my friends said "steph..." in her, 'I'mso disappointed in you' voice of doom, so, yeah that kind of sucks. my other, cooler friends were good with it, though. I'm14. as of now I'mwaiting for the final bit of extra ink to come off...people keep saying "i don't see a heart, but i see a big pink blob" well, I'llshow them!
now, Zarboz,
what kind of ink did you use? did you let the safety pin go too far into the skin? how many did you give yourself? hold old are you? did you clean the skin before you did the tattoo? let me know so i can help you (with my experienced wisdom ;))

Please clean any area to be tattoed with alcohol. (Rubbing, not drinking) Do not leave the tatoo covered for more than one to three hours, it has to have air to heal properly and retain the ink as well. You should try a google search to see what type of ink to use. When I got my tattoo (professionaly) it did not bleed and certainly did not go anywhere close to 1/2 inch deep. The only thing I can tell you about the ink is that it was much, much thinner than the inks you have discussed (i.e. Bic). As you have been warned DO NOT use India Ink, it is toxic and does cause infertility and birth defects! Good Luck.
P.S. My tattoo has not faded any and I've had it over 10 yrs. Try a professional.

Well, I'm new at this whole self-tattooing thing, but your method sounds painful...*shudders*

As for your question...I doubt you will die. If it was unsterilized you might get an infection, but that would probably be it. It depends on the brand of ink, because all companies are slightly different, but I doubt it is any more toxic than bic ink or a sharpie, which is what most people on this board seems to have used.

My suggestion is that if it gets worse (i.e, turns a funny colour and is oozing a strange substance) to talk to your doctor...

ANYWAYS!!!
i don't know that a staple would do much piercage (yes, it's a real word! i made it up 5.5 seconds ago!)...of the skin...i mean i guess it would work, but it does seem REALLY painful and creepy...hehe. OK, well like miss_bittersweet was saying, it wont cause you to die (i thought the EXACT same thing after i did mine, i was like, "please, lord...if you like me, could i stay here a little longer??" but now I'mok... so yeah, you might get an infection, but definitely not die! let me know how it worked! we're always looking for new and better ways!

hello all, i see that this q&a has been going on a while.  i'm 21 and have a number of tattoos that were professionally done.  now i understand that you are not old enough to go and do this yourself but you must consider why this is the case.  tattoos are definately cool but i don't think that you appreciate what your doing. you're tattoing your hand?!? are you crazy, it is actually against the law for a tattoo artist to tattoo your hands, do you not think that there must be damn good reasons for this?i understand that this isn't going to stop you, believe it or not i'mnot trying to stop you, i want you to understand. it took me a long time to decide what to have tattooed permanently onto my body.  I wanted tattoos when i was 14 and 15 but my ideas then were VERY VERY different to what i actually got done. you'll probably ignore me completely though, i know that i would if i wasn't me. at the end of the day please, please, just be careful

While I see where you're coming from, element, I'd just like to point out that laws regarding tattoos differ from place to place. Where I live, it is not against the law for your hands to be tattooed.

You shouldn't go too deep - if you bleed, that's too deep. When I did it, I sort of scratched myself as opposed to making actual dots. Once you're done, cover it up for a couple hours. after you uncover it, DO NOT WASH OFF THE EXTRA INK YET. I left the extra ink on for about eight hours before washing it off.

I'm just new at this, but I used that method for my tat and it seems to have worked...

Hey everybody, I am just wondering if any of you have tried a really sharp exacto blade, if it is really sharp, it doesn't hurt, and it creates a more defined line.  I also think that safety pins are really big and kinda sloppy, I did use one for a tattoo once, and it was kinda ugly.  So is what I do is, I clean everything with alcohol, then I get the exacto or needle covered in ink, and poke.  It kinda works, but what do all of you guys do exactly, I want to refine my technique.  Thanks

well, i dont really know that my deal worked...my heart isnt visible all the time! i'llbe at school and see this cute, simi-pink heart, then sitting here at home, i see NOTHING! i dont know whats up with that, but whatever! i have a bruise on my hand, though, under the heart...i dont know what's up with that, either. how did the spiderweb go? how long has it been since you did it last? ok, i take it back, i see a simi heart while sitting here...hehe!

my spiderweb seems to be okay...I touched it up yesterday afternoon, just in a couple places where the ink didn't really set. It seems to be staying for now, but I don't know what's going to happen in the summer. I imagine that chlorine and sun will fade the ink...

I mean, sure mine don't look as good, but the sense of pride behind them makes up for it. Um, thats about it, bye! (if anyone wants to ask me anything or chat IM me anytime! ok you weird children everything eventully will make u sick and die from cancer so get used to it and what the brave ones are doing is called scarification  wrong but anyways that is like getting a razor blade cutting your self let it like heal then peel the scab and then put the Indian ink on then put a band-aid

ok, to nikki, what ever you said didn't make one bit of since to me...you like, used one sentence to get five points across.
to steph (because that wasn't me)if you were to do the poking through the paper, you would loose the ink onto the paper. practice, practice, PRACTICE drawing the design on paper, then when you get it down, draw it onto your skin, then do the tattoo. another way you could do it is to use a cutting board and an exacto to cut the design out of the computer paper, then tape it to your ankle and tattoo in the hole...do you get that?
let me know if you didn't understand anything!

The best way to describe it is to "firmly scratch" your skin, if you understand what I mean...

My spiderweb is partially there...I think my problem is that the ink is washing or fading out before the skin completely heals over. Hmm....

hey everyone!! like daniel said a gun hurts alot less than a plain needle. i made a gun and gave myself a tattoo all around my ankle. that was 5 years ago and it still looks like it did a week after it was healed. i didnt know about india ink being toxic and that is what i used. didnt get sick ar anything. if you go to thy dyi network-do it yourself- they lay it all out for you to follow. just remember to be clean about it. i buy actual tattoo needles. they arnt very expensive and are awsome for shading. good luck everybody.

I did three dollar signs and a cross on my own like four years ago using India ink... No infection just a hell of a lot of ink all over the place.  Then i went to the tattoo shop and got another cross on my arm and two on my neck and it was a LOT easier... i am all for the self tattooing scene but the ones done professionally tend to be a lot better.

an easy way to get a desing on to your skin is to take the picture you want an trace it on to tracing paper an then go over the picture on the tracing paper till it is dark use ink an go over it on both sides of the paper then put clear deodorant on ur skin then lay the picture over the spot of deoderant then rub more deodorant over the back of the picture an then peal it off an the picture will be there

whoa, this is funny and crazy at the same time. Most of y'all are what 12-15, LOL, damn, well let me just tell y'all that my boyfriend(professional tat artist)saids indian ink is the worst ink you can use, a gun would hurt less than plain needle, you should not use "bic" because is not as thin as tat ink, buy tat ink is not that expensive, and as for the "Stabbing" LOL...Crazy kids! even if you use a needle
-which you shouldn't- you should never stab, you can really hurt yourselves that way, just slightly scratch the surface of the skin. B4 i got with him i used to do my own tat and i never did have the stuff you guys say, and mine are still bright and infection free. But lucky me i get professional work for free! hehehe! take care guys seriously, be careful, don't hurt yourselves! if you have any questions I'll be more than happy to ask my man, and help you guys! later dudes!

Hello! Just thought I'd contribute my little story: When I was about 15 I wanted a tattoo and, much like you guys, I did it myself (on the ankle) with a safety pin and Bic ink. Apparently I didn't do it right, because the blue heart is gone. But, hey, it was cool while it lasted. I'm 21 now, and about to get a *real* tattoo, but I'm just here to say that trying to do your own tattoos isn't stupid. Experimentation is good thing. The art of tattooing wouldn't be here at all if nobody tried it out way back when.

Anyway, if you guys are looking for tattoo gun plans, try here: http://www.diy-auction.com/diy/  under Piercing and Aftercare, or do a search for it there.

bwa haha this sounds sooooo simple!! why the hell am i doing it this other, much more complicated way?
ok, listen up!! this is the crest spinbrush pro version!
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
so you want a tat gun but yer #*@!in stupid and cant make one. heres a simple solution. buy a crest spinbrushpro[listen buy the #*@!in pro with the removable head orelse yer gunna be fiddle #*@!in around all day]. remove the head of the brush. now look down the shaft and turn it on. you should see a blunt metal object going up and down #*@!in fast. expose the metal object[this means all you dum #*@!s saw off the shaft the thing that shelters the metal object]. now heat an eraser up until its a little stiff. put it as centered as possible on the metal object. put a needle in the eraser off center and wahla. you can also put super glue on the part of the needle where it sticks in the eraser to keep the needle from jumpin al over and #*@!in yer tat up

now, keep in mind i got this from a website, and i didnt put the #*@! even though you can obviousally get the idea!! whoo hoo! if my tattoo gun doesnt work, i'mso doing it this way!

Well all, lots of people say use india ink lots of people say don't use india ink. well india ink is one of the oldest types and it will stay in your skin...it will fade to a dark green but it will still look good. if you use bic pen ink, be prepared to see that it's faded to lil or nothing in a few months. now as for doin a tattoo on yourself, i'drecommend ink virgins to get it done professionaly. i love doin tattoo's to myself, it hurts more, but ya get over it. if you are to do one yourself, make it small you might want a cover up. i started with lil dime sized tattoos.

"jailhouse" tats are drawn not pierced. So what they are saying is that you can draw on your skin with india ink w/o a problem. That says nothing about poking it into your skin.

When people say stab, they're pretty much serious--the needle should go in pretty far, but not far enough to puncture any veins or cause serious damage. (With a safety pin--I'd say about 2-2.5mm)

So, i took my oral b cross action toothbrush, poped the brush off, got a small piece of the glue (gel like) used on glue guns, went to the kitchen heated the iron piece on the toothbrush inserted the piece of "hard" glue and it stayed like hell, burned the needle, to heated up and it could be placed on the toothbrush, then burned the needle again to sterilize, turn on some loud linkin' park and tattoo my way into a beautiful butterfly on the inside of my left ankle, i did it 3 days ago, no pain no fade, yet. I think this is why it doesn't hurt like hell like it does for others, because the crossaction toothbrush doesn't move a around in a crazy manner or up and down like a real tat gun would. This one move sideways, making it easy for you to scratch ina friendly manner a little below the surface of your skin. My friend actually try this about a couple of months ago and hers was not faded or nasty looking, so i did it, and so far so good, so i think this is a good way to go, if you want, if you dont, i really dont care!

i used a thin like...beading needle to do my tat...i used india ink...it isn't poisinous...i lit a candle dunked the needle in the wax...that makes the ink stick to the needle better so u don't have to dunk so much...then went on stabin...i went over it 3 times to make it darker...looks pretty good...better than some of my friends tats that they paid 100-200 bucks for...

i have a total of 9 tattoos on my arm that i did with india ink about a yr ago they still look good , and i plan to do more.I took a walkman tape playerpulled out the motor atacted it to a spoon with the scoop of it bent down. The needle was made out of the spring from a bic lighter. Took a pen gott all the ink out of the shaft. to guid the needle.best to use a ball point pen just poke the ball out of the tip of it. Atached the needle to the motor be a little gear from inside the tape player. melted a screw into it so i could adjust the depth of the needle. Hooked it all to a home made foot pedle , and hooked it all to a 12 volt cell phone charger. Played some hard ass music and went to town. And ive had some of my friends want some work done. So i must have done some trhing right or else i wouldnt have the responces i got.  So yes you can do it. Just dont be dumb with what you put on your bodyand you wont regret it.

Aloha, one and all...

Just thought I'd give an update on my progress...

The safety pin and bic ink/india ink/sharpie marker didn't quite work for me...the ink didn't stay and I now have a VERY visible spiderweb shaped scar on my left leg. Not sure what I'm going to tell my parents when they see me in shorts in the summer and ask about it...

However, I am a very persistent person and I am going to try the spinbrush type as soon as I have money and it gets warm enough for me to walk over to the drugstore. It is possible I'll bribe my friends to let me practise on them this time, though.

If anybody makes any real progress, please post!

hey ppl. do not use bic ink!!!
this works and i have done it:
if you have those black rubber bracelet thingys called o-rings from trucks, take a SOFT RUBBER green one and burn it until it goes really black and hard. eventually if you have burnt it enough, you will be able to crush it into a powder. add some water until it gets to a runny ink consistency.
do your tattoo design with this. it works. i get paid to tattoo ppl at college. i have done my own tattoos like this, as well as having a professional butterfly tattoo. i am sixteen and got my pro one done last year with my parents' permission (big shock), and i still prefer the om symbol on my ankle from when i was 10

well ive given myself many of "memento like" tattoos and they are all turning out fine. what i use is a needle a bic crystal pen put the needle on the end grab some scotch tape and wrap it around the needle and the pen as tight as possible burn the end of the needle til its red let it cool then i dip the end of the needle into the ink tube and just start scratchin til it bleeds. then after im done i rub more ink ontop. i let the ink dry over night then i put gauze over the area. and shave it daily. and everything works out fine. you know you'd basically have to cut off about a 6x6 inch area of skin and just pour a ton of ink on there for it to get infected.

ok so i just gave myself a tattoo and i used a basic needle and ink from a black pen.  and i waited a few hours and then removed the extra ink and i could tell only some of it stayed.  so i went over it and over it.  it really didn't hurt, only at first.  and to the dude that said a half an inch- damn!!!  no way would i do that.  Listen to  spike12291986@yahoo.com.  1/16 of an inch. scratch, don't poke.  poking can get too deep, and hurts more and looks crappy.  dont use indian ink.  i had a very close friend get very sick because of it, and most of you kids are too young to die.  and that is a stupid reason to die.  luckily, my friend told her parents and they got her help, but if u think something is wrong, and can't talk to your parents, see any responsible adult.  a teacher, counselor someone u trust.  and legally, they cannot tell ur parents what u did if u tell them not to.  just so u know.  so good luck! and don't think i'msaying don't tattoo because then i would be a hypocrite.  do it, just BE CAREFUL!!!  ok sorry i wrote too much and now i will shut up.

Hey "real tattoo artist" how much do you charge???..most likely to much for a simple tattoo...no doubt its crazy that these youngsters are tatting with "food coloring"(which you shouldnt be using...pelican ink is the best and the ink stays because of the way your penetrating the skin..not because of the ink.) but who are you to tell anyone any sh*t ..you probably drive a lexus. not everyone can afford a $100 tattoo.

hey my friend did his own tattoo with some caligraphy ink (pick it up at a craftstore) and it came out great. you take a large safety pin, wrap it in thread, then cover the thread in ink. it works great. he never got infected or anything, so i tried it. you should really practice though. a good place is the heel of your foot, you dont even feel it. and about deepness, you want to get at least to the second layer of skin. if you dont it will fade. if you have any more questions just email me or IM me at andrew_emmarson@yahoo.com

the best ink is caligraphy ink that you get at a craft store. i have used it on all of mine and they are great. you dont even have to let the ink set in, you can wipe it away instantly. and Bedake, that needle wont work correctly, it is more like to put the ink into the bloodstream, because 12 gauge is too big.

I got a tat from my friend using bic ink as most of you have tried, it worked well and did not fade. You just have to make sure you poke a lot, I got a small nautical star on my arm it took about 30 mins, try outlining your design 1st then working your way in. Remember you cant poke to much it will just add more color. But dont poke to deep ! If bleeding occurs like it did to me its a good sign that its going in, but you dont want to be bleeding a lot. Im not talking about gushing blood im talking about a lil drop of blood if more then that comes out I would stop immediately and wash with soap and water

I totally understand wanting to do all this to yourselves. But, seriously, is this really smart? And, if you say who cares, YOU SHOULD. It's your body but if you want it go to someone who knows what they're doing. You all mention trying different things over and over till it gets right. GET IT PROFESSIONALLY DONE- its a one time thing.

Seriously think about it before you get a tattoo.  I got a tattoo when I was 22, it's a very pretty tattoo, nicely done.  I can't cover it up all the time, and it has caused some problems in my life.  I'm 33 now, and a professional which I never dreamed I would be.  There are tons of situations where it's not cool at all.  I'm not against tattoos, just you kids think about your future, tons of situations.  My husband's mother gave me hell all the time because I had a tattoo.  At work and work-related functions.  A large number of people that matter in my life for whatever reason, family, my job, my son's school, look down on people with tattoos.  Even though I don't agree or like it, those people affect my every day life.  Try to get tattoos that you can show off when  you want and cover up when it's "inappropriate."  Be safe guys!

I don't think it's wise to do the food coloring thing or any kind of ink for that matter too many things can go wrong with a unsteril needle and ink, first of all,India ink(man made} will fade in about two or three years and being alcohol based it can easily get really infected depending on the skin and you kinda have to really push it in to get it to stay{ouch} LOL-however Indian ink{natural} can last a life time ,IF DONE CORRECTLY...i'm not saying it's a good idea...i'm 27 yrsold and I'mstill perfecting and honing my skill i do at least ten to twelve tattoos a week and i see all kinds of "jail house style" tattoos that they or there buddies did when they where about 15 but most artist{me included} like it when people do there own tattoos it makes business for us down the road. tattooing takes years of practice and a lifetime to perfect. so if you still wanna do it make sure it's something you can cover up easily

hey um i was reading on how to dos and dont's of homemade tattoos and i used a BIC Dark Blue ink pen and a regular sowing needle. I have had it for maybe an hour and it hasn't been budged it anything that i have tried to put on it and i wiped the excess ink off as soon as i did it. I put a quarter size star on my ankle and no pain. use dots the scratches go away i know from past experiences. oh and baby oil helps get the excess ink off.

I've done tattooing with homemade ink from burned plastic and shampoo to india ink for 10 yrs in prison and was one of the best in the system!!!  Still even though I personally like the single needle look and shading and do just as good with homemade tools and ink as some so cqalled pro's outta a shop>  I would save and get a real tattoo from a expert with the style I like not just a"tattoo" only because I know that a tattoo is forever and  some tattoos i do are near perfect I know a couple years later they'll start to spread and loose the detail. but you get what you pay for.

Hey, i  just did a tattoo on my thigh yesterday, kinda a semi outline of a les paul and it looks really good, just needs touching up a few more times because i just used a sewing needle.  I used bic ink, but i was wondering if that would stay very long.  Is burned plastic better than bic ink? Anyone know the difference?

i'mjust about to give myself a tattoo, this board really helped me out alot. i already have a tat i gave myself about a year ago but it's really faded. but when i did it i didnt even do any research or anything. the method i'mgoing to use this time is scratching myself with a needle (sterilized) until i bleed a little (just to know i broke the skin) then carefully putting ink into the cut.  then i'lljust bandage it and not wash off the excess ink until i think the skins a little grown over. my friend did this 3 years ago and it's still there. good luck everyone!

I want to thank you ppl for your sharing your advice, expiriances , and warnings. I've been wanting to do a tat on myself for a while(I belive self-made tats are more personal and special), but I didn't know where to begin or what to do . I think I'll just use a safety pin and pen ink. Does green ink show or does the color of the ink really not matter????...I'm doing a shamrock :D, I'm doing it as soon as i get some feed back, so feel free to email me with any tips / alley_girl77@yahoo.com

AlleyTheRuler,
i don't think it really matters what color the ink is, it just depends on how long you want it to stay. I recomend outlining it in black for a more promising finish...where are you putting it, by the way?

Since I am a Professional Piercer in a well established Body Art Shop, I get to see lots of ppl come in with childhood or self done tats, and the same ole question: CAN YOU FIX THIS OR COVER IT UP?  You want something special to you?  Write, draw, or scribble it yourself and have a Pro actually do it right the first time around.

it's Regardless wether a pro does it or not!
I mean obviously wether your a talented artist or not, its much easier for someone to tattoo you than you tattoo yourself..
Ive got a fair few tats n piercings, all of my ears i did myself with a gun. And Most of my stomach i did myself, all having meaning. But saying that, i didnt use a gun for them, jus a needle, bic and a lighter..
And compared to my tats that where done at my friends shop. theres not much diffrence. So it's just the luck of the draw wether it stays or fades.. But always be clean, Otherwise you will end up with something like septasemia or something else quite nasty! Peace One

You kids are playing a dangerous game. It may not show now, but in years it will. That is why the professionals are the ones with the tattoo equipment. It is also why tattooing inks are used by the pros. The smartest thing for any of you to do would be to pay the money it cost for a professional tat that will be as brilliant 40 years from now as it was the day it was done. I have seen tats done with India ink, they will fade or look like a blob of ink in the skin. I personally think you need to grow up and wait until you are of age to decide what you want.....

Contrary to popular belief India Ink is not a bad Ink to use!!  I have use one brand for three years an never had a problem!!  I use Bombay India Ink!!  BIC ink on the other hand is not a good tattoo ink!!  India Ink was the first Tattoo ink used!!  The BIC ink is actually unsafe to use as a Tattoo ink it is toxic to the body!!  The Bombay India Ink is a non-toxic ink!!  Yes the saftey pins and sewing needles work but are best used when in a Tattoo Machine!!  I personaly make my own Machines out of home items!!  The depth the needle needs to reach is no more or less than 1 millimeter into the skin!!  Any deeper into the skin and it will cause more of a possability of infection and cause the Tattoo to not be as bright!!  I do recemend that you truly think long and hard about the tat that you want!!  I have a couple tats that I wish to remove or cover up!!  The only downside to using India Ink is the fact that it is hard to remove from the skin by lasers!!  If you would like instructions on how to make a quality homemade Tattoo Machine contact me via e-mail at jwp283@att.net with the words Tat Gun in the subject colum!!

Hey loves giveing yourself your own tattoo is a wonderful experience.  though it can be dangerous so be careful not to over do it. also dont put something that you will regret later think ahead.

i was drunk and had a girlfriend carv a mutant face into my ankle... yeah good old days anyway i have re done it several times recently i re opened it and put indian ink well ink inside and got an intresting finish and i know im going to regret it later and such but it was a fun first.

i have some needles now but i use mostly razors . make sure you steralize them.

1st of all india ink is DEFINATLY not poisous. i have j.a.b.j. in cursive letters i had a friend do for me on my upper arm and it looks nasty. he did it with india ink a year ago and it still looks brand new. india ink will stay forever and is the darkest. ive done 9 tattoos an random people with a sewing needle wrapped in string so that only 1/8th of an inch of the needle actually goes in. i urned the tip of a the needle till it turned red and then dipped it in cold water. i used india ink for all the tattoos ive done and none of the people had any problems, and the tattoos still look new and its been like a year since ive done them.

hey! when I was younger I found the best way to do "slow poke" homemade tattoos without a gun was to use india ink in a syringe. you apply enough presure so that the needle is dripping just a bit from the end, and it will keep dripping for a few seconds, then you basically just poke away, but it puts the ink in really well, plus syringes are nice and sharp, I have a feeling alot of you arnt peircing deep enough. anyways have fun kiddies.

I have just done loads of tattoos. I gave my self my daughters initials on my arm. I used a sewing needle and dipped it into gel pen ink. they are great and really dark. I had no problems. does anyone know where I can buy some proper ink from? the only bad thing about using gel pen ink is well my mate used this ink and his tattoo went green after about 2 years. oh yea don't ever use ink out of a printer cause it fades with in a week.

all i did for my two tattoos is put ink from a pen on my skin in the shape i wanted it and then poked myself many and many of times in the spot with the ink and it stayed perfect.  i think the people who say pen ink doesnt work are just scared that it'll hurt but it doesnt at all...but it does bleed just to warn you.  i have a star on the under part of my forearm and a peace/ equality sign on my thumb.  they stay...and didnt get infeccted.  plus i like to look at it and know i did it and not some stranger.  its more rewording that way

Its not bad, you can get an infection, but if u STERALIZE THE NEEDLE, like your saposed to you should be fine. GO to a pro (recomended) or you can to it yourself, just be careful

hi, i just did my tattoo two days ago.  i have always wanted one, but decided at fourteen, that i should do it now.  i know it sounds stupid, but i did it because i was upset and felt like being rebellious towards my parents. childish, huh?  oh well, i don't regret it, but i want to know what to use to clean everything.  i used alcohol to clean the sewing needle and my skin, and i used a permanent marker.  i poked my skin a little, then put ink on the needle and poked it again, used the needle to scratch it and put the ink over it and wiped it with alcohol (HELLA PAINFUL!!)  its still there, but when i poked and inked again in a few places, it bled a little in some places.  ummm, ... help?

I can't believe the people here commenting on India ink and how it's toxic. It's a load of b/s as usual I have had a tat with India ink for 7 yrs now with no side effects. My children are fine lol in fact India ink is used by doctors which is a relatively new procedure. Study a bit before you make under educated comments pls.

http://www.endonurse.com/articles/271feat5.html

http://www.goaskalice.columbia.edu/1204.html

There are plenty more professional sources that would agree with me but I choose not to waste my time. :)

And to all that reads this a tat is for life what looks cool at 16, 17, 18 may not be appealing at 65. It something that should be thought about hard before you go ahead and do it.

Yes you can use india ink I have done it multiple times but thats different but I would agree with most go to a Respected artist unless you know what your doing with the needle and hand skill dont do it either that or build a home made tattoo gun but believe me if you can go to a respected tattoo artist it may cost more but its worth it also on that fact you cant do as much detail with the needle and hand as you can with a tattoo gun and also if you dont know what your doing there will be very small but to a person who knows tattoos visible skin spaces in the tattoo and if you want a tattoo that bad you depending on the state you can get a tatto when your 16 and it also depens on the artist cause there are alot of artists that wont tattoo minors good luck oh yeah and dont listen to the retard telling you to use bic ink that can get infected or give you gangreen it will also give you ink poisioning and its not permenent i am currently aprentacing to be a tattoo artist

Yes you can use india ink I have done it multiple times but thats different but I would agree with most go to a Respected artist unless you know what your doing with the needle and hand skill dont do it either that or build a home made tattoo gun but believe me if you can go to a respected tattoo artist it may cost more but its worth it also on that fact you cant do as much detail with the needle and hand as you can with a tattoo gun and also if you dont know what your doing there will be very small but to a person who knows tattoos visible skin spaces in the tattoo and if you want a tattoo that bad you depending on the state you can get a tatto when your 16 and it also depens on the artist cause there are alot of artists that wont tattoo minors good luck oh yeah and dont listen to the retard telling you to use bic ink that can get infected or give you gangreen it will also give you ink poisioning and its not permenent i am currently aprentacing to be a tattoo artist oh yeah and p.s tattoo ink is just a form of india ink i have been tattooing sense i was 11 and now am 17 soon to be 18

yes, the_only_smart_one_here does make a good point, but i believe that what really matters is the moment. who cares what we will think in the future. and if you really don't like it you can get it removed. i have tattoos i did a long time ago and i don't regret them. just because you get i when your young doesn't mean you will regret it and kill yourself.

Ya man my friend gave him self a tattoo a year ago and it SUCKS! I am only 15 but at the time i was 14. And i at least had the common sense to have my friend act like my dad with a respected artist. By the way my "friend" is a well known dumbass who got kicked out of his mom's house and is either in juvee or CYA.

omiword my last post was damd long. umm, if ne1s interested in branding, get hold of a stick of incense(its thin and givs fine detail), light it, use it to draw on ur skin(apply slight pressure) and wen it scabs up, pick off the scab so it will scar nicely(it helps a lot). its longer lasting than carving it with a blade(most of my carvings have faded, even the deep ones). branding scars r cool coz they show up wen ur body gets hot or cold. wicked sick

I tattooed the word "BELIEVE" onto the top of my arm last week. I scratched it then put the ink in but it didnt stay so ive been retouching it since with proper medical needles and pen ink and it seems to have done the trick. Its looks alright and even if it didnt it would still mean alot to me because I did it. If you want a tattoo folks, just do it. Screw anyone else, do it for yourselves. Peace xx

IM NOT RESPONSIBLE IF YOU DIE OR GET ILL SO IF YOU DO YOUR SCREWED.JUST JOKIN

I’ve personally used this so I know it works.
Things you’ll need:
bic pen (this is your tube that houses the needle)
4 or 5" section of guitar string ,second one from the smallest. ( this is your needle)
tooth brush ( this gets bent like a "7" and joins the pen to the motor)
an eraser from a pencil (this joins the shaft of the motor to the needle/guitar string)
small battery operated motor (from a "walkman" or a hand held fan)
some tape (to join everything together)

Putting the pieces together:
Take the guitar string and bend a little bit of the end down or up.
Take out the ink tube of the pen, and cut it to about a 3 or 4" length, now file down the brass tip of the pen to get the ball out, make the hole big enough to allow passage of the needle.
Insert the needle into the pen.
Now take the tooth brush and cut off the bristles making it about 4" long. Heat it up in the middle with a lighter and bend it in to a "7" and hold in place untill stiff.
Join/tape the pen needle assembly to the tooth brush.
Now take the eraser from the pencil and shove it onto the shaft of the motor, try to get it as dead center as possible. Join the pen/needle/toot brush to the motor/eraser assembly, tape the brush to the motor.
Take the bent part of the needle/guitar stirng and stick it into the eraser, IMPORTANT- the needle must be purposely OFF CENTER.
Now all that is left to do is find a power source, I used the plug-in adapter from a cd player. I guess you could hook up some batteries to a switch and then to the contacts of the motor.

IM NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR YOUR ACTIONS OR RESULTS SO YOUR SCREWED IF YOU DIE.JUST JOKIN

Its not really a good idea to give urself a tattoo because i have 8 of them right now and i regret everyone of them bcuz somewhere along the line they got messed up or they just looked really stupid. i think everyone should wait untill they are old enough to get a tattoo done by a perfessional and make sure its something you really want and something your not gonna regret in the future.

I'm 15 and gave myself a tattoo on my left ankle with a needle and bic pen. I dug down to where I was bleeding and let the ink sit covered overnight. It's been about 2 months and the wound scabbed up and the color is gone. Now there is just a faint scar with a little scabby tissue. It didn't work. Maybe if you get the needle right above the blood line it will stay but I'm not sure i am trying it tonight in the same spot.

I got my tongue pierced in November, I was planning on doing it myself. I also burnt an upside down cross into my side. It killed for a long time, and it blistered. I used a sewing needle and a lighter. Also I heated the end on a lighter and burnt myself with it. It hurt alot but it also felt really exciting. I don't think anyone should do this to themselves.. but not do it entirely. I got minor infections but it's great now. It really hurt.

I am 21. When I was 14, I did a little design with blue bic, and dug out the little holes with a needle and kind of twirled it around and then put more ink in, and you can still see it... it didn't get infected, but my mom got really upset... I have another done professionally, and then one done by a friend, which got really infected to the point where I had to go to the doctor for antibiotics because I had black stretchy chunks of flesh coming of... I would recommend just asking your parents to go with you and help you pick out a tattoo, and getting it done legit... but I do have to say that my dad still doesn't know about any of my tats or piercings... lol.

well i have, today, done an Anarchy symbol on the underside of my arm, at the moment it looks alright, i might need to redo it a few times though. and if when your older it turns out bad then you can just get a professional one over the top of it, i know plenty of ppl who have done that. and if you arent willing to pay the price, dont do it. it can turn out bad. i done it mainly to push myself, as i do through many ways.
anyway, have fun!

There are ways to make good tats at your home safely and correctly if you have an artistic mind.  I made a tattoo gun a while back out of an old electric razor, toothbrush, pencil eraser, sewing needle, ink pen shell, and tape. This gun can be held like an ink pen for extreme detail and using an electric razor gives you a motor with the same hertz(vibrations per second) as a professional tattoo gun. I did invest in purchasing tattoo ink, but I am sure India ink will work also. I have given myself two tattoos with the gun and both look great.

Some things may not be the best idea but the real fact of the matter is stupid ideas get done at home or in the shop. I thought the question here was will India ink work? The answer is yes, and done right it will last. Just be CLEAN and try and be smart about the placement of these masterpieces you create. Some of the BEST INK out there is homegrown, For a Couple bucks you can buy ink at the Art supply store so stop tearing up Mom's ink pens.

You guys are making a big deal outta nothing.  I have five tattoos that I done myself with India Ink. One i done four years ago and I'm fine.  Just keep them clean and put a thin layer of Vasaline over them  and they will be fine.  Mine also look damn good,  I used a safety pin with thread wrapped around it.  People seen mine and payed me to put tattoos on them.  so i think you should just go for it. most tats fade because people are to afraid to push the needle in deep enough.  of course i like the pain of it.

As a fully licensed and practicing tattoo artist I plead with you people to please not give yourselves Anymore tattoos.  You would not believe the amount of people ages 35-80 that come to me everyday and ask to cover up or fix a tattoo that they gave themselves years ago.  The worst thing about this whole process that no one has mentioned yet is that once the India ink is in your dermis (the layer that the ink rest in)  You cannot cover it up with regular ink and not risk it spreading years down the road.  There is a perfectly legit reason why people such as myself and many others have licenses and are inspected by the health department every year.  Unless you live in Oklahoma please go to a pro.  to get an apprenticeship license we have all done 3 plus years under another professional don't disrespect our trade.  If you need a good name or number email christopher.hicks@robins.af.mil

You are not playing a dangerous game at all! Im 16 and ive done this twice, using my following steps there is no way to get infection or anything and it barely hurts, my sister is a professional tattoo artist and this is how she used to do it.
What you'll need.
- rubbing alchol
- needle
- inside of a pen
- candle (dont use lighter)

--- for some reason doing it after you take a long shower makes the result a lot better

1. Get rubbing alchol and rub the spot where you want to put the tattoo.
2. Take the needle and heat it up for 5 seconds under flame to steralize.
3. Now with tip of needle! gently carve the design into skin, dont make it bleed!
4. Heat up the tip of needle and stick it into the end of the ink "cartridge" of a pen.
5. With the tip draw the design, and constannly do number 4 again and contiune drawing untill the design is done.
6. Heat up needle and go over the areas with just the heat, no ink.

Your done, it hardley hurts and it looks great i've done it before

I was wondering what ink is the safest to use and is it worse to just make a cut and put the ink in the cut?

go ahead...do it...you deserve to *@#! yourself up if you are stupid enough to tattoo yourself w/ a safety pin and india ink.

#1- india ink is NOT tattoo ink...there is a reason tattoo artists dont use it, tattoo ink is made of COMPLETELY different pigments and binders

#2-you CANNOT sterilize a needle with a lighter/flame or soaking it in alcohol...and anyone who tells you different is a liar and full of *$#@ only an autoclave will sterilize it...not to mention safety pins contain metals like nickel that can react with your skin

#3-safety pins are not as sharp, smooth, or as small as tattoo needles which means you will be tearing your skin up

#4- i could go on for hours on why this is a bad idea, but it boils down to this...it will look BAD, probabally give you an infection, and you'll probabally be paying an artist to cover it up in a couple of years.

i cant tell you how many people have come into the shop i work at wanting to get thier crappy homemade tats covered. look, just b/c something works doesnt mean its a good idea

hey all i have several indian ink tattoos, and while there is definitly a very good reason to have a professional do a tatoo (no infection, looks great, less painfull) i think there is something to be said if you can design something yourself and put it in yourself with your own hands, inflicting pain on yourself knowing that you will be satisphied later (possibly) is a great feeling, it also can be very spiritual or like a healing process. I say you only live once, if you are competent in your artistic skills go ahead and try it out.

ok kiddies... i've done many many tatoos w/ machines and w/ jus' a sewin needle... first off sterilize!!! if you don't want to scar your slef an have crappy lookin results sterilize. next, draw it on first, if you odn't it'll look bad, come out lop sided, be upside down or something along those lines and you'll be coverin it up instead of showin it off. india ink bic ink this ink that ink, lemme give ya a hint... if you have a livestock store near ya go thtere an see it they have tattoo ink for animals, yes, we do tattoo our animals.... an quit thinkin it's cruel! it's not! but thats a different subject, back on track now chickadees- the tattoo ink used on animals is nontoxic to humans, holds well, doesn't run, and is very very effective in givin' good rich color( i live in the country they're livestock feed stores everwhere here, an i under stand some of ya probably live in the city so bare with me here). now how far do ya have to "stab" as some of you call it, here's a simple answer 1/8th of an inch. how doya know it's 1/8th of an inch? here's another simple answer... if it hurts the ink will stay if it bleeds to much you went to far and the ink will run out with the blood. don't be stingy with the ink, the more that goes in the better the color of the tattoo. anywhos, anoymore questions jus' ask, laters!

i just gave myself a tattoo last night. i did it with a piercing needle and black india ink. its a small star on top of my left hand, just between where my index finger and thumb meet my hand (u kno wut i mean?). but anyways...i just poked it in deep enough till i felt it going into my skin and did that until i couldnt see thru the ink that was just sitting on the skin. so i took a cottonball that was damp with peroxide and just wiped it off. i did that process until i had filled in the star completely and i think its very cute.

what i did, was i took a fairly large sewing needle, and rapped thread tightly around it, and left like 1.5-2mm of the tip exposed. make sure the needle is clean thought. and i used black bic ink, and just poked myself with the needle(you'll feel it prick through the skin), but when your poking yourself with the needle, have someone else stretch the skin around the area. it will go through alot easier. becareful not to poke to much in the same area, because you will just have a wide open gash in your skin.

Also, ive heard from a few of my biker friends who have done it to themselves, to use toothpaste, evaporated milk, and ashes to make the ink.
be creative, ive got a friend who has both his arms completely covered, none were done professionally, prison tats ;)

Hey all,

I self tattooed when I was 14, with non toxic plant based black ink (from some hippie store)...turned out great. I still love them nine years later. Only problem is they faded..bad, so I had to get them professionally done anyways.
As for the rest of you.....I do think you have the mental capacity to decide what you want tattooed, or at least I did. But please make sure you steralize, use Tattoo Goo after to speed up the proccess and NO TOXIC INKS...this includes pen ink.
Happy Tattooing!

ok well im 16 ive wanted a tattoo since i was like in grade 5 im a huge art fanatic and ive done alot of research on tattoos and tattooing myself just because im determined ..but any how i desided to make myself a tattoo machine out of a toothbrush a guitar string and a small motor from radioshack and some regular papermate pens anyways if you search it up right on the internet you can find out how to make it its pretty simple but i went and tattooed myself with just a safety pin (i broke my machine by accadent) and i just burnt the tip till it was red and then dipped it in pen ink and started stabbing away real tattoos go in about just a little less than 1/2 of a cm but i just stabbed over and over untill i did see blood so i know it will stay there it has no sign of infection as of yet but ive been working on it for 4 days and its looking nice actually but just make sure its clean and you should be fine unless your amune system is a bad one lol i for one have a good one so it worked for me just keep it safe and be aware of the concequences

ps. i for one am an enthousiast of self tattoos aslong as you dont regret it then its a perfect way to describe yourself as you are at your current age and why not it holds memories of good times dont listen to ppls say your stupid

I think that you all are strange, fighting, and whatnot.  I think the stupidest ones are the one above this one who thinks he's so very wise and old, and the rest of the ones who say stupid things.  All i really want to know, is if the possiblity of giving a tattoo to myself is possible.  if i used ordinary charcoal, and ground it up, and then cut a picture into myself, and rubbed it into the cut, would this create a tattoo?  i think it would.  as for the india ink, why bother trying to get it when you can use charcoal.

"The other pigments considered very safe are Black, most commonly Carbon Black, or Bone Black, which is India Ink, made from burning animal bones or kerosene, and collecting the soot. Purple/Violet, which is dioxazine/carbazole violet, yellows of the Arylide type, Napthol red , based on the solvent Naptha. Reds based on other materials may or may not cause scarring and reaction. Magenta is safe, but generally considered less lightfast and more unstable than other pigments. Oranges are considered safe, as are Zinc and Titanium white, Titanium being the superior white. Browns, even though they are often based on Oxides of Iron are also considered safe."

That quote can be found at this link:

http://encyc.bmezine.com/?tattoo_ink

I don't know where you people are getting your info on India ink but it's completely safe.  Oh, and just so you know India ink is in the ink PROFESSIONALS use.

Not only do I know this from what I've read but I know this from personal experience.
I have given my brother LOTS of tattoo's with India ink (I used a Pro' gun mind you)  He's covered in them.  He's perfectly healthy and has two healthy daughters.

if you wanna do it right, tie thread around the needle one fourth of an inch up from the point, press hard and go to the thread, the thread bleeds the ink in better and further. have fun and do some cool art

You know these people are going to do what they want. You people don't have to be so rude by telling them they are stupid and stuff like that. I do my own tattoos. I am better than any artist you will ever hope to go to. I use a gun I made out of an electric toothbrush. I have been in prison for 12 years and I am the one to come to when you want a tattoo. We don't have the luxuries you people have so don't call me stupid because I do my own tattoos. I have done every tattoo on my body. I have more appreciation for anybody who does there own tattoo. Why go to somebody thats gonna give you the same tattoo that 50,000 other people have. I bet you people who say it's stupid to do your own tattoos probably can't even draw a stick figure. Or I know, Y'all got tattoos of cartoon characters. Tweety Bird or something like that. But whatever don't pay any attention to those people. If you want a tattoo and can't afford it. Make your own tattoo gun and go at it. I just hope you can at least draw a little. I made my first tattoo with a sewing needle when I was 12 years old. I now have over 40 tattoos and have done every single one of them.....JUST BE SAFE.

I see self tattooing more as a right of passage than a dangerous game. To me it wouldn't matter if the thing fades, just seeing it there affirms its original purpose. The use of tattooing inks vs. improvised inks could cause fading and possibly 'blobbing' (blobbing seems like it would be negligible) - the key to the ink is how soluble it is or rather, insoluble. Personally it seems better if it fades -- its easy to re-ink a tattoo, its hard and expensive to actively remove one. I'm well of age to get one done professionally but still plan on doing it myself within a couple days because of what it means to me. But yes, if you want something brilliantly done to shine forever, find a professional. Else, I hear soot mixed with urine is quite permanent -- just joking about actually using this, but it is permanent...
Sounds like slightly concentrated ink from a bic pen (let it sit and evaporated) and an improvised machine (for uniformity) is a good way to go. With a machine or other improvised tool you can consistently put the ink at a given depth, just below the outer layer of skin, ie a few millimeters.

tatooing urself is the only way u can learn it gets easy er the more u practise getting the dots in line an keeping lines can be hard at first but keep at it if u wanna try with animalskin first then do but i rekon its pointless as human skin strteches (an really should be streached to help the lines stay striaght an to help the ink settle any one who tells u to go a professinal (even those who have tattooed thwm selves an felt like they faild )is either a pro themselves trying to keep ther pennies in the bussiness an shud be shot or they must have no pride or selfessteem a tatoo is not a fashoin accsesory u can take off wen u want

also one more thing the_only_smart_one_here is right i don't care if you are 17 yrs old do not scar yourself .... if you were to get a infection and get really sick your parents would have to pay for what you did if you don't want to pay for the tatto then fine do it yourself and get marked just wait till you are 18

I've done my own using needles and indian ink and i was and still am happy with the way they turned out but you should always go to a good professional to get anything done because you can always mess it up...if you're really sure then i say go for it but you have no-one to blame but yourself if anything goes wrong, also good after care is key.

yes you can use india ink, just make sure that you have a sterile needle and after u do it dont scratch it. I currently am un apprentice in a tattoo shop and i started out usind only a needle thread and inda ink, i did over 40 tattoos for firends even a few full arm sleeves and none of them ever turned out bad it just takes a while. hey if that doesnt convince you polynesian tattoos are a tradition of over 2 thousand years old and they made thier own ink

Just to clear EVERYTHING up, I don't know any more about this than you do, but for certain I do know that my cousin gave me a tattoo of a four-pointed cross on my shoulder and a diamond on my fore-arm about 2 years ago with a homemade tattoo gun. Food coloring doesn't work (come on, use some common sense), india ink doesn't make you sick or prone to infection (that's what I got mine with) with bic ink you have to use a lot and keep rubbing ink in, and you don't have to cover the tat up. That's probably why people keep saying "oh I gave myself a tattoo with foodcoloring and covered up and it infected woe is me" you have to give it some air. And no matter how painful this may sound, you have to rub salt (to disinfect) and lotion (tattoos easily peel when you get them) into the tattoo otherwise you have just put yourself in quite a bit of pain for no reason.
Trust me, I've gotten homemade tattoos, scarifications, piercings, and the only problem... don't know how to tattoo myself.

Think it over tho...like many people say....tatoos are forever and they are so you need to think it over before putting something like that on your body. (i did it with reg old ink from a fancy pen that has one of those old fasion tips on it) (it looks really cool and i havent gotten an infection yet so!...keep in mind it will hurt because its a cut and IM NOT A CUTTER...but i had to cut the design into my ankle before i put the ink into it so....but it will hurt and scab over...and then when it heels you should have a homeade tatoo)

over 10 years ago I gave myself several tattoo's using just india ink. They are all still here. I reccomend cleaning everything well and really think about what it is you want a tat of. One of my tats I wish I could so badly remove, it was a impulse tattoo, watch out.. giving tattoos can be very addicting, lol. I reccomend prior to tattooing yourself go to the grocery store and by some pig meat with the skin still on it and practice your tattoo on that first so you have an idea of how your work will look. You don't need to go that deep and remember if there a some spots that don't stay you can touch it up later! If you are hesatant about getting a tat thenjust wait, trust your gut!! and Goodluck!

All my tats are self did with india ink, at first a saftey pin, then a ahome made tat gun, but I did ten long so I am covered. Umm ink I never got sick from india ink only thing we could get in prison, ash ink and spit doesn't work, pen ink will not last, shave the area wipe it down with alcohol, and start tattoing, when you get done use some A and D creme or anitbiotic creme over it. I used india ink mine are all ten years old and newer all look good, no fading, no green, black dark and still clear. Do it right and safe keep it clean don't share needles. Self tatooing isn;t understood by a lot of people they don't see the the pride in the fact you did it yourself, they want to pay someone. Not that thats'a  bad idea pro tats look good, especially if the dude interned and stuff, but I got a stroy to all mine, and I did them no one elses turn on my idea, no premade flash crap.

hey, this is mainly aimed at steph and miss_bittersweet, this thread has most likely closed up time ago, but to everyone out there, im trained professionaly as a body modification artist, but tattoos were never my thing, i love 'em but my drawing isnt neat enough, sooooooo
india ink - BIG NONO, i have friends with india ink tattoos that are fine but there is quite a large risk factor,
clean everything!, you all seem fairly understanding of this point but its serioulsy important, id recomned rubbing alcohol or better still bleach, soak you needles for at least 20mins then boil for a good 20mins or more, this is called HLD [high level disinfection] and its not sterilising! but for your purposes it will have to do,
inks, im gonna have to recommend you have a look around the internet for suppliers of tattoo ink as there really is nothing like it commonly available,
needles, well probably a fairly large but sharp sowing needle or a medium size safety pin, if your working by hand, depth wise you want 2mm or so, but no deeper than 5mm max...
hope that helpful,
fire only tempoairly kills the viruses but there back within a minute or so, but again i used to cut and do skar werks about 7 years ago and before i learnt about HLD i used to heat everything with a jet lighter {so it works but i wouldnt recomend it at all, but better than nothing}...

steph and miss_bittersweet, if you pass this again lemme know how your tats went etch@driven2insanity.com...

keep safe, and go find a professional!

Ok look..ive given myself 3 tats with INDIA ink - the only reason that the other people's tats infected is because they are dirty bastards. First wash off the area where ur gonna do it. Use a LOT of rubbing alcohol - 70% isopropyl - and constantly rub ur tat as your doing it with clean paper towels and fresh alcohol. Dont be afraid to wash it again when your done, then again with alcohol. Keep it clean like you would any other cut to make sure it doesnt infect (LIKE A PROFESSIONAL TATTOO!)

I'm 22 years old. I have 2 tattoos both done with India ink. I have done 4 on myself. I started out with initials on my ankle, covered them up with other initials, then covered those up with my goddess symbol i have now. I also have a Celtic triskidalion above that. I never had any problems or infections at all. I have given tattoos to 5 friends also none of which have had any problems. The redness & slight swelling is to be expected & happens even when professionally tattooed. In my experience & my friends experience BIC ink is horrible for you. Everyone I have seen use it has either gotten an infection or a very bad result. Jail house tattoos done with ash & such were hard to do, messy, and caused infection about 75% of the time. I don't even want to think about the harm you guys did with a sharpie yuck, I don't even want to smell them let alone put that crap in my body. The India Ink is what we found to work the best. I new sterilized sewing needle works the best & has a much sharper & finer point for detail work. They are harm to hold so you will want to thread the needle and wrap thread around it to hold onto. Plus if you are doing it by hand without a gun it helps to hold the ink so you don't have to reload the needle as often. Safety pens often do more harm than good too big of a point, not enough control, & not sharp enough you have to press too hard and then go too deep.  As to it causing infertility, all of us who have tried to have children have done so, some even accidentally lol so thats a crock & the children are fine no defects whatsoever. None of us have gotten sick. Plus our tats have never smeared or faded out as long as there deep enough. We are all in our 20's now & they were done from age 13 & up. Mine were done at age 15, & 17 and the cover ups at age 21 & 22 (couldn't decide how I wanted that one lol). So there's my opinion. If anyone wants to see pic of mine post on here and ill send them to you in an email. Elexis
PS. My advice is never tattoo something on a whim. Make sure its something you will be proud of no matter what age you are. Try to put them somewhere you can cover them up if you ever need to. We all get jobs eventually and not every employer is tattoo friendly mine isn't lol.

Hey guys and girls,
I think it's great that so many ppl have taken an interest in a topic like giving yourself home made tats... I built myself a gun with a motor from an RC racing car that I found at the salvation army for 4 dollars and a bracket I bought from home depot a long time ago and didn't use and I taped them together, then I taped the front tip of a BIC pen (The part where the ball point writing thing on the pen is) to the other end if the bracket and used a paper clip that I sharpened REALLY sharp needle like and disinfected. Then I attached the metal connectors on the back of the motor to a 9Volt adapter (Transformer) that I had laying around and put an S on my leg using the ink from the BIC pen, I blew it out of the ink tube into a bottle cap and traced the S I already drew lightly on my leg using a regular pen. It came out pretty good and I've had it for 2 years. Cheers everyone!

Well, I don't think anyone reads this thing anymore...but I don't care I am going to put my 2 cents in anyway. One night all of my friends were over and we were bored, so we decided to give ourselves tattoos. One of my friends used India Ink, and the rest of us used ink from a BIC pen. I am working on a tiny star on my wrist, below my palm..I work on it every night, and it is starting to take form and I really love it. But the friend that used the India Ink, after she got done it looked really puffy, unlike the rest of us...I am worried that she may be hurt..but anyway....if you would like to get in touch with me to discuss about self-tattooing, I would love to talk about it...e-mail or IM me at DarkStarFairy495@aol.com....bye!!

Well, I did a tattoo of my initials when I was 16 on my ankle with writers ink and a sewing needle. I'm 21 now and it still looks good. I now have many professional tattoos and can speak with a little experience. If you want to do a tat yourself, go ahead. Tattoos are expensive but don't think about doing a big piece. Do something like your initials, a star, heart... Use rubbing alcohol to sterilize the skin and needle. After the tattoo, again apply rubbing alcohol. Buy tattoo ink from eBay. Seriously, it's $4.00.

First, draw what you want on your skin. Then take the sterilized needle and poke it into the skin just a little bit. Remember it must go into the first layer of skin to stay there. THEN, after 40 or 50 little pokes, add a small dab of ink and rub off with a rag. Continue to do so until your canvas is finished.

TOUCHING UP: Always wait 10-14 days when the tattoo is healed to do touch ups. Simply go over the areas that need more ink.

Well what can I say, after over 30 hours of professional tattoos on my body I also got the idea into tattooing myself, so far 5 tattoos, the first one didn't turn out all that good guess I didn't use the right depth on the needle but I didn't use a safety pin or nothing that sounds like kind of crazy, well I got me all the equipment, tattoo gun, needles and ink, no autoclave or nothing since I'm using new needles and disposable tubes but I would not recommend anyone to do it on your own with a safety pin, isn't that more painful??  well do it if you must is a good experience !

dont use india ink!  the reason is bad for you is b/c it's not non-toxic, or acid free.  it's the same as ingesting some sort of toxic household cleaner.

find an acid free, non-toxic ink, preferably water proof.  it works.

well. i gave myself a tat on my left wrist of a heart. i used a simple sewing needle and some ink from a ball point pen. i came out fine. was a bit scabbed for a couple of days and now about 8 or 9 months later it's still there just a bit faded though. if i had used more ink it would have been darker now though. i was just afraid to use a lot for fear of infection. i've been thinking about getting another one of something different on my ankle. i wanted to also make a gun to make it easier but using a needle is pretty damn easy. doesn't even hurt that much. i've also pierced my lip (my friend did it for me) and that also came out fine. you just have to keep everything sterile and keep your body clean and use common sense. going to a professional doesn't always garantee a clean piece of artwork. i'd rather make sure that everything was clean myself.

just don't be really stupid and you can get away with it.

I have a heart tattooed on my lower hip. I used blue ink from a non-toxic pen. I heated up the needle and used rubbing alcohol to sterolize it. It took a few times of retouching it, but it has stayed for 2 1/3 years now. I don't know if the same thing will happen to you, but I went swimming about a week after I finished it and the skin around it was really irritated and itchy. I also have an X tattooed on my ankle, and it looks really stupid and I regret that I did it now. Just remember, it's going to be there for a long time.

i gave my self a tattoo on my wrist, and its worked. just take the ink out of a regular bic pen, which thicker ink tend to work better, and keep punchtering the skin with a needle and generous amout of ink. once your done, wipe the wound with a hot, damp rag . what ever doesnt come off is mostly perminate. dont get your tattoo wet for abouta week and a half, or it will scab over and just not work. Dont hot tub or allow the tattoo to have direct conect with the sun.wash it out daily and apply a non-fragrcened lotion to it once a day. If it starts getting infected, see a doctor. dont put neosprion unless it has gotten infected, otherwise it will cause the tattoo to scab over as well.

I tryed a couple times to get a tattoo. I try to make them meaningful to me. I just used a sharpie & a needle. last time i did it it didnt work but i used sharpie because it is non-toxic.all i really want is a peace sign on my hip & something symbolizing a string then the saying "never let go till the end" but i dont think im gonna regret it cause its representing something in my life, & it meanssomething to me not just some dumb picture.
im only 14. but i really dont want to wait because it shows wants going on in my life now, & if i get it later, it wont mean as much to me as it does now because the stuff that it represents might not be going on. even tho i hope it still will be even tho i hate it. Can someone please tell me how to do it more "correctly" so its more permenant? i dont think i am going to get an infection because i have never got one before. & i rarely get them

Okay, so I just tattooed myself today, using India Ink by the way, so far it has turned out just fine.  I am waiting day by day to see how it goes.  I used a sterile needle and yeah it hurt like hell, but the words "Carpe Diem" turned out wondefully on the palm of my hand.  Everyone says I was stupid, but whatever, it would not be the first time if it gets infected.  My navel ring got infected too, but I took that out.  But lucky for me, one of my best friends is an apprentice in a tattoo shop and she has done several of her own tattoos.  So she told me what to do and how to clean it.  So yeah, to me it seems perfectly fine for now.  I suppose I will keep posting as time progresses.

I liked the idea so much that I got a lil' tipsy and let my friend give me a tattoo with a single needle and didn't even cry so stop yer' belly-aching you girly pants sissies and get out there to a Michaels or a JoAnn Fabrics, get some india ink and just start a stabbin'

Alright people, first of all, india ink and bic ink may not be safe, but as long as you dont tattoo on/near veins and you dont go to deep you've got NOTHING to worry about, ive given myself numerous tattoos (along with lots of piercings). Just rmemeber a tattoo needle only goes 1/32 of an inch into your skin, just enough to puncture the dermis...

I've also checked out ETERNAL inks from the UK and have read they are made from non toxic natural substances, has anyone used these inks who can give me some feed back on them?

You can use india ink, and it will look okay, but personally i would go for actual ink - online it costs about $5 an ounce, which is enough for 10 tattoos at least.

And dont listen to negative people! DIY tattoos can look just as good, and be just as safe, as store bought ones.  Sterilize your stuff, and know what your doing, and you should be fine. People only know I did my own tattoos if I tell them, but I know, and that makes them so much more personal.

I've been wanting to get a tattoo for long time. But I'm only 16, so I can't without my parents permission. So last night I cut my skin on the lower part of the side of my hand(near my thumb) in the shape of a star, and it only bled a little. Then after the patted the little bit of blood off, I went over it with Sharpie and it kind of went into the cut. So do you think if I let it heal over it will stay?? Idk, and now I'm afraid to wash it off because I really don't want the ink to wash out of the cut.

I just did a small 'x' today. It's located over my heart, is very discreet (almost hidden by my bra), and very small. I did it with black BIC ink. It's fairly weak for a first application, and I'm gonna do a few more, now that I now how far in to go and such. I'm a major needle wimp, but it didn't hurt nearly as much as I expected it to.

Just remember to disinfect the crap out of everything, trace a pattern beforehand, and don't be stupid about it. I doubt you'll love that little Spiderman in twenty years.

I have yet to tell anyone... I'm a bit nervous. My friends aren't the tattoo type. I'm gonna wait a few weeks until it's better formed (right now it's an 'x' scar with a few gobs of ink... kind of pathetic), and then break it to them when they're in better moods.

Good luck to all y'all!

dont listen to all the idiots telling u ur an idiot. you can do it yourself. just make sure u rub enough ink into the scar. and rub some of the ink on the bandaid that you will cover it up with later. it helps the ink stay in during the healing process.

I have done two home jobs on my thighs (the only place I could hide them) and have received a couple of very nice pieces on my shoulder from a talented professional artist named Puka, in Sydney Australia. You'll all have made up your own minds by now, but let me relay my experience anyway.
When I was 12 I cut a design into my left thigh. Then I rubbed a large amount of semi-solid ink into it and wrapped it. This worked for a few months, but now it's mostly scar-tissue. For the right, I used a home made gun similar to the one above and Indian ink for an art supply shop. I now have a green cross on my right thigh. I was never sick from the Indian ink (as someone above suggested) and I was very careful about infection.
However, I show of my shoulders all the time, and receive many positive comments. When girls see my thighs but, they just ask why I would do that to myself. To the general public, tattooing yourself is akin to self-mutilation. And in the tattooing community, it's seen as stupidity.
Make up your own minds...

So,  I just did a tiny cross tattoo with india ink.  I used a thin beading needle that I sterilized with fire (you have to wait until it turns red, nothing lives on a hot poker, according to my micro teacher).  The way I controlled the pain was that I wrapped an ice cube in a wet paper towel, and used it to clean off the excess ink every five to ten stabs/scratches.  I also stabbed with a slow, controlled movement, and made sure that eventually the area I was tattooing weaped.  I hope that it stays, and that it doesn't blead, but if it doesn't then oh well

So I've done six or so tattoos in the last few months so I have a good idea of what to do. I'm 15 and I personaly have a spider web on my right hip, and a spider on my left ankle.  In regards to ink, NO BIC INK!! That ink is way too thick. India Ink is worse than Bic ink.  Use a caligraphy ink.  Use this stuff called "Eternal" that you can pick up at any craft store.  Use a sewing needle with the non-pointy end in the eraser end of a pencil and wrap the needle with thread only leaving about an 1/8 of an inch of needle showing.  The thread will hold the ink.  Clean with Witch Hazel; it works the best. Clean after each time you ink, then redo any parts.  Keep cleaning till you are satisfied. Then on your last round, leave the ink to stay for 10 minutes; no longer no less.  Wash off and put a band-aid on and there you go!

o and, you people who think "tattoos done at shops last forever" are horribly wrong. granted they last longer then india ink but they need touch ups every few years. most of them give the first one free but after that need to be payed for. the skins layers fall off and with that comes the ink that didnt make it fully under the first few layers of skin. this goes on until we die.so if you want your tattoo to look as "brilliant as it did when you first got it" you goin to spend probably 150 bucks extra on a 200 dollar tattoo

i made a homemade tatto wit just sum ink from a pen i did a big 3, and a cross on my shoulder.. that stuff stayed but my 3 faded in about a month... if youre gonna do that, use vasceline or lotion to keep your tat moisturized, so taht it doesnt get dry and peel... and if youre gonna do it unproffecionally dont be stupid, steralize the needle and dont poke too far into the blood n shiiieet... N if yal got any hints or tipz help a homeboy out.

This isn't an answer. more of a question, I used a purple gel pen to put a cross on my hip, it looks bruised but doesn't hurt that bad, did I get ink poisoning and am I going to die? I'd rather do that than tell my parents. I've had it for two days and the purpleness around my tattoo seems to be fading, but I'm freaking out. I never do anything bad, my dad would kill me!

ok i did mine with bik pin ink and heres how i did it, unscrew your pen take the ink reservoir out and blow the ink on a jar lid, and mixed some colgate plain tooth paste in the ink for thickness, this is also one of the ways they do prison tattoos, and i used a needle tied onto a pencil with thread, i drew the out line of a smiley face, and then did the deed, it looks just like the out line, i have no infection nor pain, the toothpaste also help with fading problems, if it does'ntlast oh well but i don't think it's going any where, well if you do this hopefully you will have the luck i did,i am still stoked i did it and am to dally glad i did it.

you are all confusing and or scaring me.
At first I was going to do this with india ink and a needle...then it was pen ink...now i don't think i'm doing it at all.  This was not very helpful to be honest.  All the drama over I'm a real tattoo artist listen to me or stfu cause we know what we're talking about.  Everyone's body is going to react differently. like a f*cking cold.  Some people can go about their normal lives and some people are bed ridden for a week.  some people may get infections from tattoos and some may have them for the rest of their lives.  Hell, half the side-effects you guys are talking about can happen if you get a tattoo profesionally done too.  Do what you want with your body, just remember you have to face the consequences.  Never regret it, just don' do something incredibly stupid.  Like tattoo your boyfriend of three month's name on the inside of your wrist :|

Arright, so most of u guys sound chill enough, im 16 run Cross Country, Track, yeah i like to run. I've told my parents im gettin a tattoo, that ill find a way, i dont care what they do. I want for my first to be a half-dollar sized wing on my right ankle, and i know exactly what color, i researched an stuff. I got a plan that might work for some of you, I looked up which states have age restrictions, and found the following:
FL - have to be 16 or older
Conneticut- Minors have to have Consent
and a couple of states have rules like this, so for those of you with parents who tell you to wait till your 18, or till your out of the house, its really not that long of a wait if you manuever the right way.
Best thing to do would be get as much info as you can so you sound like you know whats goin on. i live in NY but i got a fastpitch tournament in CT and vacation in FL, pretty smooth huh?
Basically anyway you can, figure out a way, our parents and their parents and so on, they left the us the world polluted and wartorn, why would we listen to their wishes when all we have is ourselves? Do what you think and feel is right for you, and dont conform, Be your own idol. Im not a commie, a socialist, i just dont agree with the way we are being 'used'. Little things in life are what make it yours.PLAY YOUR MUSIC AS LOUD AS YOU WANT. Peace out.

I often wonder about giving myself a tattoo, But I'm always to scared to follow instructions that are on the internet. If i were you i would try talking to a tattoo artist about the the procedure. Then you will know what to do from there. As for the ink, i think you should use non-toxic ink, and make sure there is no ingredient you may have allergies for.

Yes, you can use India/Indian ink. Now i agree with alla these pplz bout goin to a Pro..ive got many many professionally done tattoos and they all look better than the jailhouse tats i have. But thats to be expected and i think that everyone who wants a home made tat knows this...so now im done lecturing and back to the info you want... just draw or have drawn a design on reg. notebook paper then lay it on the place of skin u want the tattoo...then rub reg. deodorant over it so it will make a stencil...get a sewing needle dip it in the indian ink good. then poke it into your skin...do this numerous times until the design is finished and if you are happy with the result and dont want it to go away or fade or see later on that it needs touched up redo those directions...its simple really. thanx for reading and i hope ive helped...i hate sounding like a preacher so i thought unlike alotta others on here id HELP YOU! thanx -Tabitha

You guys are all way too young to be trying to permanently scar yourselves. I love tattoos, and am "covered with the things", as my madre would tell you. They date back to way before I was 18, but all of them are professionally done (I had an older friend who was a tattoo artist).
All you who use india ink and Bic ink? Stupid. No matter how much you sterilise the NEEDLES, cover them in rubbing alcohol and coat your skin with whatever magical protective solution you've conconted, the INK you use is still ink. It's still poisonous. You're playing with fire here; even the littlest slip can get that stuff into your blodstream, and it can be really hella nasty. So don't do it; wait until you're 18, or get a professional friend to do it if you can't wait. Don't get anything stupid, or anyone's name (EVEN if you think you'l be together forever; I found out that important tattooing lesson at 32, so it's nothing to do with "puppy love") or one of those dumb "emo nautical stars" every idiot has on their wrist. A), you'l look like everyone else (and isn't the point of body modification to become more of an individual?) and B), in a few years it'll be totally passé.
So steer clear of self-tattooing (unless you're a pro, know someone who is pro and can help, and have access to a proper sterilisation station and tattoo inks).

India ink is toxic, as is Bic and other pen ink.  Go have your blood checked for toxicity and baterial infections (such as staph).

Get it done by a professional.

Stick to branding if you want DIY body modification. Its easy, and doesn't hurt as much as everyone thinks. If you want a large brand done however, you should have a professional do it for you. With branding just make sure the metal implement is clean first, and the heat of the process will keep it clean. Brands also do not fade. I recommend using a topical anti-biotic afterward though and keep it clean after you do it. Burns are very susceptible to infection.

Also, don't carve.. like I've been reading about you guys doing here..

Stick and poke. Which means take a needle, wrap some floss around it and bunch it up at the bottom so that you can have some ink flowing and just poke your skin with the needle. You can adjust your tattoo a lot more easily this way also. It won't be a "here I go and if I screw up, I screw up" because you're going so slow that you can always stop to make sure you're doing it right. And if you veer off in the wrong direction then you haven't done too much damage [as long as you check it enough.]

Keeping in mind, to all those who wish to speak so ill of doing it yourself, that before 'pros' and tat shops even opened people have being doing it themselves. In fact for thousands of years before. Now, I am no tat artist, but I do have studied the human body pretty well, and as long as you know what you are doing and do it in a clean environment and with the right tools, you should be fine doing it yourself. However, for those that cut or burn the design in first, you double the risk of infections. So be smart, study your method first, and make sure you know what design you want.

Ok, tattooing is not as big of deal as everyone makes it out to be. You won't kill yourself over a tattoo you did when you were young, at WORST you will cover it or remove it. I say if you want to tattoo yourself, go for it, even though the risk is higher. A tattoo you did yourself is intimate and personal, and if it turns out that it doesn't look so great, so what? Get it covered by an artist. I did my first tattoos by myself, still have them, still proud of them.
