It used to mean that if you got your right pierced you were gay, but your left you were straight.

Now a days it's meaningless.

That right ear gay myth is about as idiotic as step on a crack, break your mother's back. I have had my right ear pierced since 1971 and even then there were no truths or reason to the myths...in fact, depending on who you listened to, right was never wrong or left is right. Hey Elton John had his left ear pierced and look what pool he swam in. I'm hetero to a fault and put up with that childish urban legend more than I care to remember. It actually amazes me to hear the myth is still perpetuated and passed down to our children. How appalling. In fact, as a professional musician most of my adult life, back in the 70's, most gay men I ran into had their LEFT ear pierced. Today, most gay men have them BOTH pierced....and even if you're not gay, who the f**k cares what ear you have pierced or if they both are. Are people so incredibly stupid they would think body jewelry is a definitive badge of someone's sexual preference? Time to let such an antiquated legend fade into the past and move into the 21st century....and some people really need to get a life. Peer pressure is such a waste of effort....have the balls to do what you want and stick up for your own decisions.

just to put the record straight on this one...

Because of the myth that gay men get their right ear pierced, elton John purposely put on the opposite side of that.

he did that to keep people from thinking he was gay, or possibly for his own mental benefit that becuase he didn't pierce the ear that gay men do, he couldn't be seen as gay.

I'm a lesbian and recently had my right ear double- and triple-pierced (I already had a piercing on each lobe, now a new right lobe and cartilage) for the direct purpose of having people know when they look at me that, yes, I'm gay.  And one of my college friends had the same thing done, too.  The right=wrong, left=right stigma is alive and well now, and many people know that the right piercing is a homosexual identifier.  And I've known lots of gay men that pierced their left ears just to pretend to be straight, which is kind of sad.  Poor Elton.

um even if they were trying to hide it on there left ear, how would you know they were gay anyways, without them verifying it? Exactly

I do think it is silly for this myth to be perpetuated and passed from generation to generation BUT on the other hand, if the gay community continue to follow it (and hetero's for that matter) then it will much like a "self fulfilling prophecy" because it will remain true, and in the process then continue to be passed on to the next generation, who will then follow it.
Also, i think its good that shy gay men can have some sort of symbol so that other know they are gay without any confusion. To a person that has only just come out, such subtle signs are a godsend.

I'm straight and 58 years old.  I've wanted to get my ears pierced for 20 years but my wife disapproves.  The other day I said to hell with it and got both lobes double-pierced.  I wonder if that makes me bi--you know two on the left make me straight; two on the right make me gay.

Actually in the crowd I swim with, the BDSM crowd that is, Left means you're a Top or the more dominant type, and right means you're the submissive or bottom type.  So in the end it's all about which crowd you play in!!!

I go to an all girl school and most of the girls there get their right ear pierced after deliberating whether or not to actually go with the right=gay left =straight thing. I really don't care if their gay or not but i wonder if they actually take it seriously.

Thank you all for clearing that up, I'm getting my upper cartilage pierced today and I'm straight and I thought I'd do a quick google search to double check the myth; I have no problem with gay people, I'm just not one and would rather not be seen as one.

Im straight and today i got my LEFT ear pierced. As Urban Legend Debunker says, this myth should be burried with the 70's.

what the hell, who cares. left or right your either straight or gay. im gettin my right ear pierced, and this might sound strange to some people, but i will still fancy girls =O amazing. who cares what ear its only a myth. i know a gay guy and his left ear pierced because he said that people were stereotyping gays. stupid myths.

We believe that piercing the right ear does not have to necesarily mean you are gay. It's stupid. But then, if you are gay, and want to make it apparent, then go ahead and get something extravegant like piercing your entire right ear. And if people ask you about it, have the guts to tell them the truth. Otherwise, just pierce the ear your heart yells at.

I am gay and i have my right ear pierced, but i didn't even know it meant any thing until my parents through a fit when i visited them the other day.  Now that i look into it, guys who dress in purple or have yellow socks are labeled as being gay, and apparently all rainbows are now equated to homosexuality.  I don't really have an issue with str8 people labeling us, or making generic umbrella statements, but they had better watch out or they will all be walking around in neutral tones with miserable attitudes, and drab lives...any thing else might be considered gay.  I guess were part of the modern witch hunt.  I hope they don't burn us at the stake! lol

I want my cartilage pierced, but i dont think thats happening (im 13....almost 14)i would want my right one done..but im not gay..? MY left ear is like pointy and small...i like me right ear much more : )....do you think getting it in my right ear(when ever that might be) is going to be like social suicide?

It still to this day is that if you have your  right ear pierced it means your gay. I have this girl in my class and she said that the only reason why she got her right ear pierced was to show that she was gay. So yes if you have your right ear pierced it means you are gay (male or female).

So what do u mean its straight if u pierced the ear on your left side....like the side of your left hand? Or do they mean it as if someone is standing in front of you and looking at you..like there left side.....?

I'm an old timer.  This legend probably had some truth back in the 50s and 60s, when it was difficult for gays to come out.  Nowadays it's irrelevant.

I think that everyone has a little bit of gay inside of them.  Yes, the right ear does represent the fact one is gay, however, I am gay myself, and have my left ear pierced.  Don't worry what other think about you, you know who you are, don't try to act like someone you arn't.

Ah gee!  I just go my right ear pierced today.  I only wanted to get one pierced and I didn't even think about that till after.  I've got no problems with gays or lesbians, quite a few of my friends are, but I'm not a lesbian...Ah w/e.  Teasing is nothing I havn't dealt with before.

I know that ear piercings on the right means your gay but what about any other kinda piercing like your eye brawl or your nose or nipples? Is it the same as the ear piercing thing ?

Thanks to all of you for clearing that up for me. I was thinking about getting my cartiledge pierced, and everyone was like "oh my god! make sure it's not 'the gay ear'!" so i seazrched on goggle, and now thanks to your posts i know that it does not matter in what ear your are pierced... so thanks.

I never thought it was a "myth". Its not like you pierce your ear on one side and you automatically become that sexual preference. Its just a way for homosexuals to identify one another.

Recall that sailors who survived the journey around Cape Horn pierced their left ear - the side typically to shore for Europeans making the trip.
I agree - do what you want and stand up for it. I've had both ears pierced since 1970. Done with an ice cube, match sterilized needle, and mucho tequila.

this is stupid i just got my left ear done then the code changes ive done my ear 3 time and the code always changes i feel that if u want to get it done it don't matter what ear it is just if u got the balls to stand to the peer pressure.

wow... people still believe in this nonsense? If someone's going to assume something about someone else just by looking at them, that doesn't say much about their character... Likewise if someone would purposefully do something to their outer appearance for the sole reason of having people identify them on how they look, well that doesn't say much either.

too bad i didn't look into this ealier lol, just playin. i'm straight and just got my right ear double pierced in the top ridge. honestly i could care less what people think. I think it looks good and that's what matters. i'm comfortable with my sexuality :) most of my gay friends have a ton of girls around them all the time, i don't see this as a bad thing ;) lol

I'm as straight as an arrow, and have both ears pierced.  However I wear a hoop in my right ear and a stud in my left and am always questioned  (and sometimes propositioned) on my sexuality.  I always thought that if being gay in American society is "wrong" why would gay men and women want to announce their orientation openly to the world and risk persecution and worse.  Who knows.  All I know is that it ain't true.  I know lots of gay people, and not a one of them as just a right ear done.

i recently had my right ear pierced (on me cartilage) i did not know of this gay myth until after i had it done n im straight... wot is this about?!?! i'mgonna keep it on me right cos as a myth thats exactly wot it is ! a MYTH!

I was thinking of getting my noise pierced and so is my sister. so i suppose that the nose is the same as the ears, and whichever is whatever people think it is means whatever in sexual preference. Like it matters...pssh. My male friend has had his ear pierced since he was 5, and no one has ever thought he was gay or straight. but i don't know which side its on..so yep.

and its all fashion nowadays, especially with the emos and what not..it doesn't matter what side its on, if u are mutilating your body, you will have a hole somewhere.

As a gay male, I have my left ear and left cartilage pierces. Honestly I didn't think about the homosexual identifier when I had it pierced. I just wanted the left on because I had a tattoo on my right shoulder blade.

Basically, piercing one ear or the other shouldn't make a difference, just like being gay or straight should not make a difference.

Today I'm getting my nose pierced. I'm piercing the right side to signify that I'm bisexual. Just something personal. Most people will think it's ridiculous. Piercings despite cultural perception are personal, they should have some meaning for the wearer. That meaning shouldn't be due to peer pressure or anything like that.

yeah i thought that the right ear was the gay ear so to speak. Sorry i didn't think I was an idiot i just thought it was like...an offical thing like the rainbow flag and stuff...I am a gay rights activist (work for HRC) so i am not a homophobe...just thought the right ear meant someone was gay.

My sister works in a high school in Brooklyn, NY and she says everybody there strongly agrees that the right ear means you're gay.  Apparently all of her students have both ears pierced, and are highly aware (believe me, these kids are really on edge about homosexuality)of having your right ear pierced.  It may only be in Brooklyn, though, that people still care...

Hello World. We fell in love with 2 dancers at a dance competiton and we never even talked to them but we love them. They both had their left ears pierced multiple times. Does this mean a higher possibility of them being straight? We hope so. Thank You.
