As far as I know the numbers on the golf ball are there for identity reasons.  For example if I am playing with a Tidlest 1 and I am looking for my ball I won't hit the Tidlest 2, because it belongs to another golfer.  When you gold it can be hard to locate your ball.

The numbers can be there simply for identification, or they can indicate compression rating or number of dimples. The colors really don't mean anything anymore. At one time, red indicated a softer compression and black a harder compression. There;s a good article on this here -- http://golf.about.com/cs/beginnersguide/a/bfaq_numbersonb.htm

Single Digit # - just an ID to keep track of who's who
Double Digit # - Would mean compression rating
Three Digit # - Throw it away and buy some new balls. 3 digits haven't been used for a long time.

the number on a golf ball means whitch ball is yours and it also has to do with the compreshion rate if the ball 1 being the softest and 3 being that hardest

I believe that the numbers on golf balls indicates the flight path of the ball. The varying number of pimples will affect the flight path of the ball, e.g. higher pitch and less distance, some balls might have less loft and a further distance. This would work on the principle of aerodynamics, whilst the ball is in flight.

the number is for identification reasons but balls may also have a number in the three of four hundreds showing number of dimples on the ball
