I have a 1989 dodge aries and i wanted to know what a good tempature reading is? it stays halfway between hot and cold

That is usually where they sit,  My turbocharged (factory) Plymouth Carevelle always sat in the lower quarter of the gauge.  In the lower quarter was normal for mine.

If the Thermostat is functioning properly, the radiator is not blocked or plugged, and the water pump/alternator belt is tightened correctly, then that may be the normal running temperature for your car.

My K-car is an 89' and she needed a little coolant recently.  sometimes the transition between season throws the beast off. check your coolant, and maybe add some.  it fixed all my problems.  have a good one
