Too young is anything under 1 1/2 years or the third heat. 1 year old is hardly out of puppy hood yet. With some dogs, especially smaller breeds, it would be wise to wait until 2 years old or the fourth heat. This is for the safety of the dog. Smaller dogs have a higher risk of complications so you must be more cautious with them. Because of this, if you want to start breeding, it is not wise to start with a small breed. Get a medium largish sized dog such as a Golden Retriever, Labrador Retriever, Siberian Husky, German Shepard, etc until you are more familiar with the breeding process and better able to handle situations. If you have breeding/pregnancy/whelping questions, email me at stanishas@aol.com Bye! Tanisha
