Does the guy have a weapon?  Does he see the dog coming or does he sneak up on him?  How tall is the guy?  Does he have formal training in self defense?  Is he an experienced dog catcher with a rope and a cage?  How big is the pit?  Why is he attacking the guy?  How game is the pit?  How game is the guy?  Does the guy twist his ankle and fall?  Does the dog have a heart attack and die?

IN OTHER WORDS WHO THE F.CK CARES!!  YOU ARE QUITE POSSIBLY THE LAST PERSON IN THE WORLD WHO NEEDS A PIT.

actually smart ass, i'mjust wondering what people think.but it's you, and the people with bad attitudes like you that are the last people in the world who needs a pit.the pit bull reflects its owner and your pitbull must be the type that just spazes for no good reason. Thanks asshole for making it hard for good people like me to own a pitbull.by the way i said AVERAGE MAN, think for yourself, use some imagination, and come up with your own conclusion, thats what i was interested in hearing anyway.if you still can't answer the question maybe your also the last person who should be giving advice on here about pitbulls.

pits are very strong dogs, im sure you've heard of the pound for pound comment.  Most pits dont cross the 60 pound mark. a full grown person could deffinately defend against a pit.  bigger breeds are more of a problem to people.  many breeds are bigger and far surpass the power of a pit. when it caomes to raw power there are a lot of stronger breeds that would cause alot more damage to a person.

What is the best (most humane, nonlethal) way to protect yourself against an attacking pit?  I'm not asking how to prevent an attack; I grew up around dogs as my mother was a breeder of 2 large breeds.

However, my husband and dog were attacked in the park yesterday and both sustained significant damage requiring surgery.  The attacking dog would simply not let go, for nearly 5 minutes, despite 6 people attempting to get him to stop the attack.  FYI: This was not an abused or attack trained dog, nor was it a rescued dog.  I mention that because I want to be clear that this dog did not suffer from the standard factors that would provoke an attack.
The attack was unprovoked and took place after the pit had been in the company of over 20 other dogs and their owners for over an hour.  It simply walked over to my dog and attacked, then when my husband shielded our dog, it went for his throat.  He used his arm to shield himself and it tore into his forearm.
Back to my question:  what could we have done to stop the attack once it was underway?  Obviously, weapons are not an option.  I would like to know if there are some methods that will work on this dog breed, because their bite is so strong and their instincts seem to be to not let go once they chomp down.
Thanks in advance for any info.

i think everything should be taken with a pinch of salt, a pit bull for example, is excellent with a pinch of salt, tossed in with a healthy sprig of parsley, just as its being lightly flambEd in a wok...
remember kids its not a dog in the fight that matters, its basting often and seasoning adequately

Actually bob, you are such a dumbass that you used the words "attack trained pitbull" and didn't expect to get called on it.  If you want a guard dog go buy a german shepherd or rotweiler or pinscher.  Pits are way too good natured and friendly and the only way to make a good guard dog out of one is either to beat it or improperly socialize it.  Even if you get it to attack strangers on command without having to beat it, it still won't attack people it knows, even when they are breaking in to your house or trying to steal your guard dog.  Anyone who thinks pits are macho guard dogs shouldn't own one.

My answer is NOOOOO!!!! I was walking down a street at a junkyard for parts.  While looking for parts a stray 90 (guessing weight) pound mixed pit charged at me. I am 250 and 6'4" and the dog attempted to bite my leg. I jumped backwards before the pit bit my leg.  The dog lunged again and I kicked the dog on the head.  Like I said I am 250 pds.  The dog's head just slightly moved to the side. The dog again attempted to bite my leg and thankfully I reacted quickly enough to jump backwards again.  The dog backed off, not because I kicked it in the head. It backed off I guess because I left his territory.  Could an average person defend their self against a pit.  I don't think so lets just hope that the average person will be lucky as I was.

Macker....one could NOT defend themselves if being attacked by a pitty. As a former pitbull rescue (3 years) I've seen it all. These dogs are determined and do not feel pain when in fight mode. (You wouldn't stand a chance)!

A pit bull, could attack and be lethal to a man, if they attacked from, behind. Aman has more strenghth in him, in the pound to pound ratio. We also have a height advantage...So yes it's plausable but unlikely for an average consciouse man..or women for that matter..

Who gives a F**k. Do you plan on trying it out, or are you just a stupid owner trying to train your dog to be mean. I have many friends who own Reds and I myself own a colby and they are some of the most gentle dogs in town.

I have had to break up a couple of dog attacks and found a large bucket of water works.  Drop it on the head of the attacking dog.

I also want to advise caution when you command your dog to release if the owner of the other dog can not or will not.  I felt so bad for mine when he listened and the other was not willing to let go and the owner had no control.  My dog was only defending from an overly agressive dog. I still re-live that moment alot.

To answer your question in a different way than Mr.4Star Bob which did make a few good points in his own way, I.m just saying that it depends on both you and the dogs will to live or die,if you cherish your life more, than you will most likely win. On the other hand, the dog may have a bigger desire than you to live, then it comes down to who has the better tactics.A dog basicly will use his mouth and no brains, average man has fist, feet, mouth and brains if he decides to use them before he go's insane."which just might help his chance for survival".TIP: If YOU GET ATTACK BY A DOG JUST DON`T LET HIM HAVE YOU,GIVE HIM ALL YOU GOT AVERAGE MAN OR NOT.

although, pit bulls have lockjaw, so if they bite you, they won't let go. And it is very hard to get them to let go, you practically have to kill them.

This is a question that has just to many varibles. My APBT weighs 84 pds, and is a friendly as can be. when we wreslte aroung i think man i can whip my dog any day, but when he starts to get a little carried away and those teeth start to get you and you realize his speed and strength and makes you think twice. Pits bodies are small enough to where you can try to wrap on up and try to hold down to stop the head thrashing, but getting the dog to let go would be the deciding factor. hopefully someone is near by and has a breaking stick.

IF a pit attacks by jumping up, knee it in the chest.  If it attacks while you are down, grab its jaws and hold them shut, their opening power is very weak.  Any pit that is from a loving home will not attack unless attacked or

macker I disagree,
The larger & heavier breeds are slower than the pitbull.
Plus the pitbulls (and similar breeds) are tenacious & unrelenting,
Unlike most other beads, infect I found that the taller the dog,
The easier it is to knock them down of balance...
(I noticed that playing with large/tall dogs)
But you cannot do this with pitbulls, they got very sturdy posture, plus you can try to hit them with anything that comes to your hand, unlike other dogs, in most cases
They will disregard the betting, and WILL NOT STOP the attack!

Actually I found this thread while searching ways to defend myself
against pitbulls attack.

I've allways wanted to try to fight a pit.I can throw 60 pounds at least 10 feet, numerous times, and if your aim is right, you could swing that bastards head into a wall if you wanted. They are still inferior animals, and if you know how to use your body correctly, it is more effective at killing than a pit's. i'vealso never encountered an animal than can fight after its nose and eyes hve been ripped out of it's face, which takes minimal pounds of pressure, and zero amount of skill. So yes, i could kill a pit with my bare hands. Please take into consideration i weigh one hundred and thirty five pounds. Which means any other man should have less of a problem.
Or so they would like to think.

An average man could definetely defend himself against a pitbull attack. If you notice most if not all incidents of pitbull attacks that result in traggedy are those of little kids and elders.

I've owned several pits as a youth.  I think a grown man can adequately defend against a pit if he keeps his cool and remembers to use wit to beat off the pit.  I heard sticking your finger in the pit's ass makes them stop.  I don't know if that's true but I do think if a pit bights your leg that allows you to use your hands and fingers to gauge at its eyes-that's sure to do something.  Now, if you get one of those pits that weigh over one hundred lbs, and these are rare, then a man might have to use a weapon.

p.s. CH is an ass.
