I want to know whether or not the police departments or the military can use pitt bulls that love humans, but has a real hard time getting along with other animals as either drug dogs or working dogs?

a few police depts. do use them, but there sense of smell is not as good as some other breeds so there not the breed of choice for drug detection although the biggest drug bust ever from mexico was detected by a police pitbull in southern california.i forgot her name but she was rescued as a puppy out of a fridge in a drug bust.the military does not "officially" use them anymore but one of the greatest wardog heros was one of the "unofficial" military dogs of either ww1 or ww2.it was a stray pitbull that hung around the base, and when the people went over seas they took the dog with them.while over seas the pitbull warned the men of incoming rocket attacks before any sirens and saved allot of lives.he also caught a spy single handed(pawed)and held him until troops arrived.he did many more things.there have been many pitbulls in the police and military over the years.they have been increasing in numbers in police depts. all over the country lately but like i said there sniffers aren't the greatest so they will never take over. despite the smell problem they are also becoming more popular as search and rescue dogs.oh yeah, one more thing the officer who owns the pitbull in southern california has said he will never again use another breed and has found the greatest partner he ever had.oh, i just remembered her name, it was Popsicle.one thing i have noticed about pitbulls in work is that they might not be the majority, but the people who use them have no complaints.

Yes both some police and military have used pitbulls, but they are not the breed of choice due to there poor sense of smell. Some well recognized ones are a pitbull named Popsicle in southern california who was rescued in a drug bust locked in side of a freezer left for dead as a puppy. She later went on to make the biggest drug bust in u.s. history by a police k9. The military does not "officially" use them anymore(but they are there). One of the greatest wardog heros ever was a stray pitbull who hung around a u.s. base during ww2.When the troops were sent over seas they took the stray with them. The dog saved countless lives by warning soldiers of incoming rounds before any sirens alerted them. He also caught a german spy and held him until u.s. troops arrived. He is credited with many more things though. the pitbull was actually the u.s. mascot back then and was on a few ww2 posters representing america everywhere. They are becoming more popular as police k9s but they will never take over due to there nose. They are also becoming great search and rescue dogs also along with many other important jobs that was once never imagined. This is probably the most versatile breed that ever existed, and along with all the bad they are credited with, they are proving themselves to be well rounded dogs that are capable of just about anything.as far as them getting along with other police k9s, i don't know, but the officer who owns Popsicle says she's the greatest partner he ever had.

Kline, you've got the right idea about Popsicle, but some of your facts are wrong.  First, Popsicle is a HE, not a SHE.  Popsicle's big drug bust was the biggest at one particular point of entry (from Mexico into Texas)--not the biggest from any border entry.  Popsicle was found in Buffalo, New York; not southern California.

To whoever said that the military doesn't use pitbulls any more, there is a white apbt named Duke that serves with the u.s.m.c. right now.  And i'm not sure about their sense of smell being bad either because I have a friend who loses his weed alot so he trained his pit to find it for him.  One time she dug through a big stinky pile of dirty laundry and pulled out the pair of pants he wore the day before with his stash still in the pocket.  Not saying they have the best sense of smell but at least equal with a shepherd.

Our Staffordshire terrier (pit bull) Molly is training to be a service dog.  She is
1-1/2 years old and does very well with her (schutzhund-German) commands either spoken or just given by hand signal!  She can smell through glass and beyond.  She smells people coming to our house from a long distance.  We are guessing perhaps nearly half a mile!  She is pretty shy but would never bite.  We have her clearly dressed as a service dog in training and she keeps her priorites well.  She knows when she is working and when she is not.  When she is working it is hard to get her to stop working and relax.  We are hooking her up with a local Sherrif'sSAR team if she passes her FEMA tests and wish to develop her as a cadaver dog.  Perhaps these animals are known for a dull nose, but Molly is the exception, not the rule.
