They were using gold and silver coins. Some of the better known names of these coins are: Real, Maravedí, Escudo, etc.

The late 1600's was sort of a changing period between the early 1600 coins (a lot more varied) and the much more structured early 1700 coins system which was basically:

Gold coins:1/2 Escudo, Escudo, 2 Escudos, 4 Escudos and 8 Escudos. (5 coins in total)

Silver coins:  1/2 Real, Real, 2 Reales, 4 Reales and 8 Reales.

Bronze coins: Dinero, Maravedí, Dobler, 4 Cuartos, Treseta, 2 Maravedis, Seiseno, 4 Maravedis y 8 Cuartos.
