what is a break stick. i have a lab/pit mix and she is the sweetest. but i was reading some of the answers to the questons and i found that i don't know what it is. My guess would be a stick to break the jaw of the dog to get him/her to release whatever it has a hold of.... am i correct in my assumption??

I know it's been quite a while since these posts were submitted, but i ran across them just tonight, & I feel that I have to comment on ligilg's answer. The original comment asked if the "break stick" was used to break the dogs jaw in order to make it release its hold on another animal. First off, it isn't likely that you are going to break a pit bulls jaw with a stick (short of the stick being a 5lb sledge hammer).
Now, to clear things up a little, & answer Christina's question, A "break stick" is a tapered stick used to wedge between the back teeth of the pit bull, & slightly open the jaws to break the hold (not break the jaw) in order to seperate the animals. I hope in some way I have provided a little bit of help.

I have 1 lab/pit male, 1 pit/shepard/boxer male. and 1 shepard lab mix female.  I also just had 8 lab pit mix puppys 4 days old.  My dogs have been in a lot of fights, the only thing I can do usually is choke the dog that will not release.  You actually have less of a chance of hurting the dog by chocking it then by prying its mouth open.

A breaking stick is a device made to be inserted in the mouth of a Pit Bull (behind the molars) to gently pry its jaws open and release its grip on another animal or object.

No, the break stick does not break the jaw of the biting dog.  It breaks the bite--it is used as a lever at the back of the dog's mouth to cause the biting dog to release the grip.

a break stick looks like a knife without teeth
when a PIT BULL gets lockjaw you stick it behind the back molars in the PIT BULLS mouth it should be flat against the dogs gums you twist the break stick and the dogs jaws open just enough for it to let go

NO IT DOES NOT BREAK THE DOGS JAW
it breaks the hold

they are usually used to break up dog fights
PIT BULL FIGHTS

im in FL give me a call sometime

a break stick looks like a knife with no teeth it is smooth all around so it wont splinter the PIT BULLs mouth
when the the bull gets "locked" on to another dog you grab the dog who has hold by the skin on the back of the neck, then you stick the break stick into the back of the PIT BULLs mouth so that it lies flat against the gums behind the back molars, then you twist the break stick and the PIT BULLs mouth will open up just enough for the other dog to be released
NO IT DOES NOT BREAK THE DOGS JAW!!!!!!

NO OFFENSE TO ANYONE BUT IF YOU DONT KNOW WHAT A BREAK STICK IS THEN YOU SHOULDNT OWN/HAVE A PIT BULL
im sure everyone knows what a muzzle is

you can never trust a pit bull not to fight
that is just plain ignorant

call me sometime

the break stick is not to break the jaw of the dog.  it is also known as a parting stick.  it is a contoured, wedge-shaped piece of wood used to break the dog's grip on the animal it has hod of.

it is used in the following manner:

1.  Straddle the dog that has a hold, and lock your legs just in front of its hips.  This takes away any leverage the dog had and may be enough to stop a fight in and of itself.

2.  Grab the dog's collar or the scruff of the neck and pull back slightly.  This take any remaining leverage the dog may have had in the neck area.

3.  Insert the break stick 1/2in-1in into the dogs mouth just behind the molars (there the teeth do not meet) and twist.  This should cause the dog to release its grip.

Breaksticks aren't used to break the dogs jaw, rather to break the dogs hold.  it is inserted into the dogs moth mouth behind the molars and then rotated to open the jaw without harming the dog.  More info available at:

A break stick is used to pry open the mouth of a pit bull when it has a grip on another dog. It is inserted between the gap in the molars then twisted to open the mouth. See pbrc.net for more info.

A break stick is simply a shaped piece of wood, or now they have poly vinyl ones, that you slip in between the back molars of your dogs mouth. It does not break their jaws, in fact they do not even hurt them. It merely loosens the jaw grip that breeds like pit bulls get. Since they have such large muscles in their head (not lock jaws as some people believe) they sometimes have a harder time actually releasing (or maybe they just don't want to release) but the stick gets in between the proper place and makes it so that it is possible to open the mouth.

No! A break stick or breaking stick is used to loosen or break the dog's grip not their jaw. It is a smooth wood or poly stick that has an oblong or smooth triangular profile with tapered end. The narrow end is inserted in the gap between the dogs teeth behind the back molars. The stick is then twisted like a motorcycle throttle to loosen and open the dog's grip.

no, a break stick does NOT break the dog's jaw!  It breaks the grip a dog has on something.  it is a stick that is sort of wedge shaped on the end which you insert into the mouth of a dog that has a firm grip on something and will not let go. it should be inserted behind the molars at least a half inch.  then you twist it and it opens the dog's mouth so you can pull it off of whatever it would not let go of, usually another dog.
