I have two questions.  I read that Rottweiller'sdon't do very well with hyperactive, timid, or shy people.  I am very soft spoken would it be very difficult for me to train this kind of dog.
Question two my children are autistic do you think this could make it a bad dission getting a Rottweiller?  Both boys can be hyper and my youngest son has tantrums and yells.
I would really like some help.  My husband really wants one, but I will be spending more time with the dog than he will because he is in the navy. Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

Sincerely,
Tricia Tucker

If your children are hyper active...best not get a rotty. Esp if they are younger children. Rotty's tend to be protective dogs and may not realize the difference between hyper and hurt. Unless you can control your children AND the dog don't get one yet

One of the jobs the Rottweiler'sused to do was actually to mind the children of their owners back when the breed was first created. From my own personal experience of owning a Rottweiler, they are absolute angels with kids- providing that you raise them with a healthy balance of love,  disipline and training. They can be a cheeky dog and if they know they can get one over on you then they will, so you have to inforce that you are the 'pack leader', so to speak, if you buy yourself a few training books for Rottweilers and stick to it then you should have a dog that will love and respect you and your children for a very long time to come. They are a beautiful dog.

I have had three Rottweilers. The 3 I've had would not care about hyperactivity, timidity or shyness.I would say it would be difficult to get the dog to respond to your authority with a soft voice. One of my males would get very annoyed if anyone pulled its ears etc which a boy is likely to do.He probably would bite if annoyed too much.
However, this being said,I would get one if I had a son.

I am a Rottie owner and a professional trainer. While I think it is possible for a situation like this to work, I do not think that it is worth the risk. I have worked a few cases with autistic children, a friend of mine is a psychologist that works specifically with autism and we have worked a few projects together.Rotties are a very diverse breed, soldiers and clowns was the title of one article I have read. I think that
a trainer is a good idea regardless of what breed you choose, but I think there are a lot of breeds that would be a lot less stress and a lot less work. Because of the autism I don't see the age of your children being a factor. You can contact me at (714) 545-2999 or, cpfacd@yahoo.com.

If you will treat that dog very good (with love) they will not be agressive i have two children and  13 years old Rottweiller (tyson) and i have no problem with him you just need to train Rottweiller to be not agressive and to be an ideal dog if you are going to buy him you need very young Rottweiller to treat as you want.

Our rottie at 7 1/2 just died, I am on the hyper side and had 3 kids (oldest now 7) with her present.  She was the best dog.  I have to say, I believe all kids are hyper so any rottie should be fine.  We are getting another one in a few weeks.  My husband is soft spoken and she did well with both.  You simply need to be firm and decisive with your commands to any dog and you will succeed.  Good luck! P.S.-I would never recommend any other dog.

I had 2 rots and just put one down because of cancer, the other is very active,  The dogs can definetly sense fear or timidness and they feed off of it, it also depends on male or female, mine are males and very territorial, the active one seems to test me alot and i need to put him in his place, my ex-wife has a female that is a big teddy bear, i would recamend a female for you be cause of your husbands situation in the navy, also females may be more incline to take to your kids and there sickness. Hope I could help Kris.  Also don't forget there are no bad dogs just bad owners!

A Rottweiler will defend his family and property to the end, but he does have a tendency to become loyal to one person.

Why are you getting this dog besides your husband wants it. You must be committed to this because it sounds like your husband will not be able to put in the time it takes to be a responsible owner.
this breed has gotten a bad reputation because people get them for the wrong reasons. This is going to take continued training, socialization with other dogs and proper behavior around adults and children. Dogs are pack animals and they must know their number in the pack this is your responsibility to avoid problems. If you do not know how to do this I suggest you read up on dog behavior before taking this commitment on.
As far as your children you should never leave them alone with any dog and your children also must respect a dogs space as well. Please do not be a bad owner because the one that suffers is the breed!!!!

I don't think the problem would be the children it would be that you are a shy and timid person. I own 2 rottweillers and you have to be very firm but loving at the same time in order for the dog to not walk all over you as rottys will do if dominance is not demamnded by their master. I run a daycare in my home and the children are with my dogs all day(with me in the room of course!) My question to you is WHY does your husband want a rotty when it seems that yoyur lifestyle and personality would be better suited for a dog like a golden retriever? Theres nothing that i despise more than someone who wants a rotty cuz thwey think they look tough and are protectors. Rottweillers are a wonderful pet with the proper training and love. Mine wouldn't hurt a fly but instinct is going to tell them to protect me if need be and they are trained enough that they will listen to me over instinct.

Hello Tricia

I advise you that you look for a dog`farmer for these children and your. I have a Rottweiller seven years old and I have not had problems neither with the children, neither with the women, neither with the old people. They are excellent dogs, intelligent, obedient, and brave when one needs. but they also depend on the owner.  This type of dogs should have a "owner" with a firm character (or it is if or it is not), because this race doesn't admit terms means.  he/she investigates a little but. ok

greetings

In my experiance with rotts they do very well with kids of all ages and differences rotts are very well suited for dealing with children with many different handicaps however you must really pay strict attention to the breeding of your rott because some unethical breeders, breed them for agression. in an animalthis size is a severe problem. my wife is very timid and has no problem handeling our 125 pound male rott. we are also the parents of an autistic child, and an adhd child both boys. do not get an adult!!! start with a puppy so that in can become acclimated from its youth and I dont think you will go wrong.

Rottweiller's, as with any dog, need a leader or they will become the leader.  I would never expect most dogs to attack a member of the family, however they may attack a non-family member if they feel the "pack" is being threatened.  Learn to become a leader of the house and the Rottweiler is one of the most rewarding dog breeds.

A Rottie is an animal that require much attention and if you fail to give it that attention  you will fail that dog.  They are very intelligent and they may take over the house.  When that dog gets to the weight of 150lbs plus you will really have problems.  Don't risk your children or that dog's life. Allow everyone to live safely.  Your husband is not too bright if he rather have a dog then his family
