what were japan's motives of joining world war 2?

America had cut off Japan's supply of oil and scrap metal because Japan had been attacking China, one of America's allies.
If we sent oil, Japan could power their vihicals. If we sent scrap steel, they could make more weapons and vehicals.

Japan entered World War 2 because she:

1) wanted to protect the land areas she had 'collected' as a result of her imperialistic drive
2) she needed raw materials to sustain her war effort- eg rubber from Indonesia
3) Strategic/military security
