The difference between 5.1 and 5.2 is .1

Seriously...from what I've seen AIX 5L is versioned like most Linux OS's.  5.2 adds enhancements to 5.1 and 5.3 adds on to 5.2.  Since drivers are binary they are tied to the OS and the filesets won't work across versions (bffs, the standard AIX filesets, are precompiled programs).  This doesn't necessarily mean that the components operate any differently.  5.4 is due out October 2005

Also, if you are testing and dependant on freeware the Linux toolbox is available and you can try different versions of software.  In some cases there are only rpms for 433, but they seem to work fine with 5L.  If you need them obviously try to find the right one for your version of the OS.

The Linux toolbox webpage is here:
http://www-03.ibm.com/servers/aix/products/aixos/linux/download.html

But they only link to one package at a time...if you need a different version check this out:
ftp://ftp.software.ibm.com/aix/freeSoftware/aixtoolbox/RPMS/ppc/

Best of luck,
