what does the term "playing off the rail" mean?

it could possibly mean only one of three things.  either: a) using the rail for your bridge hand to make your shots.  b) keeping the cue ball from resting on the rail  between shots.  c)using the rail for kick and bank shots during the game.

The term "Playing off the rail", means that a person staking someone in a game is playing by backing that person with the cash. In this case the word rail is stemming from the word railbird, a name given to the persons sitting around the table watching and possibly also betting on the game.
