If a dachshund is raised, from puppyhood--say 3 months on--with cats, what are the chances that they'll get along?  Should I choose a female, say, and/or a specific type (e.g., long-hair vs. smooth)?

I have two dachshund, one male that is 6
yrs old and has been with two cats since his first day in our house.  They get along
just fine.  In the last month we've gotten another one, a female which is 12 weeks old.
My cats are constantly swatting at her and
trying to chase her.

I think in time they will all get along fine.

My little weiner is 6 months old now and she gets along great with our cat.  It took a couple days for them to get use to each other though.

We have a five month old dachshund and two older cats.  One of the cats simply adores the puppy while the other just ignores him.  All in all it has been a great experience.

I recently bought a doxie, in July. She will be 5 months old at the end of this month. Right before we got her, we found a stray kitten that we adopted, and when I brought Cammie home, she and the kitten got along fine. They will chase each other all over and wrestle and bite each other playfully. But then at night they will curl up and nap together as well. I think they get along because they are around the same size. We also have a rottweiler, who our cat will have nothing to do with and our doxie is intimidated by, so size is the only thing I can think of that has brought them to be best friends.

I have had doxies for 16 years my beloved Missy passed away at 14 yrs of age, she got along with our parrot which was very funny, also with my mothers 2 cats, if they get to know each other, they come along just fine, in fact best friends.

i just put down my 16 year old and from the first day he set foot im my house he has been around cats.  he slept right next to them or even had them sleep on top of him.  the only problems i ever had was when a new cat came into the mix and that only lasted a month or so.  it took longer for the other cats to get along than it did for the dog and cat.
