I am hooking up an aircondishner 240 Volt window mount and there is no 240 outlet there.  The Aircondishner needs a double 15 amp breaker which I installed into the breakerbox and ran 2/12 wire from the breakerbox to the new wall outlet, I also installed which is a 15 amp 240 socket.  I hooked up the wires to the box this way, Black to one side of the double breaker and white to the other side and copper ground to the ground bar.  On the outlet side I hooked the black to the gold screw and white to the silver screw and the copper wire to the green ( ground ).  I tested the outlet with a meter and got 120 from one side to ground and 120 from the other side to ground.  I install the unit into the window and pluged it in and nothing happens, the air will not turn on, could the unit be bad and should I return it or did I do something wrong?

I found the problem. The double 15 amp breaker I installed was at the bottom of the box and it was not hitting on each strip of the bus-bar so I moved it up one spot and moved the single breaker above it down and I got 240 across both legs.  As far as the outlet I mentioned before I wrote it down wrong, it is not a gold silver and green ( typo ) it is a 2pole 3 wire Gold, Gold, Green.
