Metal barbells can chip or wear the enamel off your teeth. This mostly happens from not being careful:) I have had mine for a week and have learned how to eat in such a way where I don't bite the barbell. The best way to prevent damage is to not get it done but what fun would that be? After the initial healing is done I will replace the metal one with a flexible barbell. I found a bunch in the $1.99 section at Bodycandy.com they are acrylic and will bend also if bitten, they will do much less damage:)
