they are the same, but an amstaff is the dog that is regarded as a show dog and missing much of the gameness and the working ability of the pit bull terrier. American Staffordshire Terrier was the name given to the American Pit Bull Terrier when it joined the AKC. Some dogs are dual registered in the UKC and the AKC, so they are called both.

American Staffordshire Terriers are the "americanized" Staffordshire Bull Terriers (from England).  Not sure where the APBT fits in, but they are slighly different breeds.  However, AmStaffs, Staffies, and APBTs are all "pit bulls."

The truth is that staffordshires and pit bulls USED TO BE THE SAME THING.  However after many many years of breeding for separate purposes, (show vs. working/fighting)  the amstaff and most staffy bulls are nothing more than completely useless imitations of the REAL pitbull.  The only thing staffy's consistently do better than apbt's is pose and look pretty.  (this is not to insult the few rare lines of staffy's which are still game bred in other parts of the world.  This is a generalization of the breed in general, especially those living between the pacific and atlantic oceans)

Pitbulls can have black or red noses where as an AST can only have a black nose. ASTs tend to be shorter and stockier with a more box shaped head. Pits are taller and more slender dogs although both are muscular. A lot of times you might think a pit bull has lab in it bc of the height and "lankiness." It's almost impossible to really tell the difference tho. BOTH GREAT DOGS!

i agree pitbulls do rule, but so do am staffs!!!!pit just a little more.  nose color does not matter in determinig which it is.
am staffs r more of a show dog they have less game.
am staffs have a broader chest.
pitbulls have a brick like head am staffs head is broader.
am staffs r a couple inches shorter.
am staffs have a more strict color line. even though they come in all the same colors as pitts (including nose color) am staffs should be at least 80% white, black or tan. any other color does not mean they r not an amstaff, it is just a disqualifing trait.
the same thing goes for eyes, am staffs should have dark eyes even though they come in light colors.
am staffs nose should be black it is a good trait, but they do come in other colors as well.!!!!

TO all  the viewers if you know APBT's. They originted form Stafford Shire "England". They started with the Old English Terriers & then they added the Bull Terrier. Thats where the APBT and the Staffordshire Terrier come from. Like Ambull Owner said AKC wants to register a non-fighting breed. So they changed the name from APBT to Staffordshire Terrier. The UKC still recognizes the history of the APBT. Thats why UKC calls them the APBT. And AKC calls them the AMSTAFF.

I believe that the Am Staffs are a more pronoused dog as far as the head and chest, although I have seen some big Pits. The Am Staff has a black nose. The Pit can have both a red or black nose or red coat, paws and nose also called family reds. The Pit Bull is a more leaner or sportier body.

Pitbulls were originated first which they were used to bait bulls and fight.over the time people made pitbulls so mean they couldn't handle them anymore so the crossed the pitbull with another bulldog breed to make a more controllable dog which became the amstaff. The amstaff looks very similar to the pitbull but the pitbull is way more powerful and comes in various colors.pitbulls noses come in any colors Amstaffs comes in only black. A strong Amstaff could pass for a black nose pitbull. The only way to tell the difference is simple if you don't know if it's a blacknose pitbull of Amstaff look into thier eyes if there looking straight and the white part on thier eye is visible its a Amstaff if the white part is not visible it's a blacknose pitbull. Both the pitbull and the Amstaff are show quality any very good family pets. And don't think all pitbulls or Amstaffs are mean because its not true. The owners or trainers are the ones who make the dog mean.So I hope I answered all of your questions if not feel free to e-mail me at kelliebolden@bellsouth.net.Have a good day and remember punish the deed not the breed. And pitbulls is whom we call friend so please don't let thier breed to end.

I have an American Staffordshire Bull Terrier and he has what is called a dudley nose. The only difference I can see is the Amstaffs tails are shorter and are better for protection. My little guy looks just like a red nosed pit bull but is lighter in color.

Oh my God!!Never say that an AST is an APBT!!they aren't the same dog and never will be!!take a look at the internet to see the diferences..Enter in www.newkraftfeld.com.br and see what is a AST or American Sttafordshire Terrier. and there are many www'sthat talk about pitbulls and others..for example, there are three kinds of this kind of dog : American Pitbull Terrier, American Sttafordshire Terrier and Sttafordshire Bull Terrier, and they aren't equals...
