I have a large pit that is often labeled an AM Bulldog. I bought this dog as an 8 week old pup and have his registration and pedigree. His dads a pulling CH and his mom is a hog dog both top of the line APBT's. He is 85lb and has nice muscle tone. The question is,is it uncommon to have pure bred pits be this large, and is it common to have AM Bulldogs this small.

Yes and yes.
Its not overly common for pitbulls to be that big, but it can happen, and am bulldogs are often that small.
There is alot of overlap, both dogs are working dogs so there is alot of variation in their sizes and appearances (they aren't bred to a specific standard like show dogs).
I'm pretty well versed on these types of dogs but I've seen dogs where I wasn't sure if they were an ambull or pitbull.
I wouldn't worry about it.
I think they are the best looking pitbulls anyway, the big white ones with patches. (I'm assuming thats what it looks like if people are mistaking it for an am bulldog).

As Gun previously mentioned it is not uncommon but far less likely. The larger the Pit Bull means the lesser amount of terrier was infused in the the Bulldog(American Bulldog)when cross bred with the Black and Tan or White Terriers back in the old days. Both beautiful dogs and both hard workers.
