I have a 5 year old Shepard-Sharpei mix who gets recurrent infections between his toes.  He has been to our veteranarian several times and has been treated with several rounds of Prednisone and antibiotic therapy. The infection keeps comming back. I asked for a culture and sensitivity on our last visit and was told it is a staph infection. I know that steroids, such as Prednisone, can actually raise the blood sugar and feed the infection and am not certain that this is the best way to treat an infection. Also, I do not like the idea of having to keep my dog on antibiotics or steroids prophylactically. Antihistamine baths provide relief, but do not treat the infection. Please help! What can I do?

I have a 5 year old Shepherd-sharpei-pei mix too! I went through *years* of skin problems, including staff, and hundreds of dollars worth of steroids and antibiotics myself until I switched my dog to a raw food diet. There is an injectable staff culture you can also try (get it from your vet), which is pretty cheap if you can handle giving the shots yourself once a month. But before you even try this, I highly recommend trying a raw diet. It's expensive if you buy it, and time-consuming if you prepare it yourself, but for me it is worth every bit: all of my dog's numerous allergy-related issues have disappeared, and it's even improved her temperment.

What type of food do you feed him. I have a full bred sharpei and he used to get that.  I now feed him a holistic dog food all natural, no soy, by-products, or all that other stuff that I cannot even pronounce and he does not have that problem anymore.  I get the food from Smart Pak.  Their website is www.smartpak.com.  Usually sharpei'shave alot of food allergies and what your dog has sounds like that.
