What are the different kinds of chihuahuas? (I am only interested in short hair varieties).  I cannot decide which kind to get.

There aren't really different kinds of chihuahuas.  Poodles do come in actual different sub-breeds, called Standard, Miniature and Toy based on their size.  All chihuahuas are considered Toys.

There are differences in appearance between chihuahuas, more than other breeds, or at least more apparent than other breeds.

Some are thinner than others, some have heads that differ in various degrees from the breed standard description, some are smaller than or larger than the 3 - 6 pound range that is eligible for showing in dog shows.  Terms such as 'applehead', 'deer type', 'teacup', etc. describe differences in appearance, but they are not different breeds of chihuahuas.

There are people who claim that certain physical characteristics always go along with certain personality characteristics.  That has not been my experience.

What I suggest is that you get the book Chihuahuas for Dummies.  This is the best book I now on the care and maintenance of this adorable breed.

I also suggest that you take your time and visit lots of breeders, see several litters and don't get a pup that doesn't seem to have almost selected you first.  Chihuahuas bond extremely closely to their owners, if the fit isn't right, you could both be in for a very long and miserable time, since chihuahuas can live up to 20 years.

Do not go to a pet store, be wary of ads in the newspaper and immediately walk away if a breeder tries to tell you that 'teacups' or 'deer types' or 'appleheads' are rare breeds of chihuahuas and so they are worth more money.

Also be aware that 'teacups', those usually below 3 pounds, tend to have more health problems due to their extremely tiny size.  I have a slender 2 1/2 pounder who has cost me over $2000 so far for two hernia operations, removal of retained baby teeth and assorted other issues.  I knew that she might cost more to maintain before I adopted her, so I was prepared and willing to spend the money if needed.  My other chi weighs 4 pounds and is more sturdily built than her sister, but she is just as loving and just as loved as her more fragile 'sister'.

I don't have an answer but more of a question along this line. My cousin got a chihuahua that does not look at all like a chihuahua, it looks like a beagle. The people they bought it from for $500.00 said it was a non traditional chihuahua, and if they wanted papers the dog would cost $100,00. Is there a non traditional chihuahua? THANKS!

i just got a chihuahua he is 6 weeks old but i'mnot exactly sure what kind he is? he is very tiny about 2pounds9-10 inches long and he is short haired and he is going to have longer legs. i don't know where to look to find out what he is exactly because we got them from someone far away and they passed the dog to a friend to deliver for us, but never said what he was.

I have 3 chihuahuas..one with a gorgeous round head and bug eyes...the other 2 females were referred to as WAFFLE HEADS
they have the long and slinder noses as compared to the short nosed male.   I assume
that it really doesnt matter...but to look at the visably you CAN see the difference.   Is one any better than the other ..breeding wise.  just curious.. thanks  TERI
