1996 CHRYSLER LHS EXCESSIVE IDLE SPEED, FAULT CODE P1294; MIL CODE #25 = which means "TARGET IDLE NOT REACHED". Problems to look for are said to be: INTAKE VACUUM LEAK IN GASKETS, HOSES OR TUBES, OR AUTO IDLE SPEED (AIS) MOTOR CIRCUIT, OR SHORT OR OPEN IN ONE OR MORE AIS CIRCUITS.

The engine starts and immediately Tachs to about 3000 RPMs, In a few seconds the RPMs will drop to 2200. With the A/C clutch engaged the RPMs will drop only to about 1800. At that tremendous speed I have to then select DRIVE. The RPMs will then drop to about 1100.

Obviously, this is way excessive. Vehicle Driveability (OVER THE ROAD) appears normal and acceptable, with decent Road Fuel Efficiency when considering that coasting engine RPM is 50-60% above normal.

Again the problem occurs at a full stop with the engine idling in gear. Typical idle speed then is a very high 1100-1050 RPMs and that is with the Air Conditioner clutch engaged (1400 RPMs without the A/C). The MIL will illuminate and Error Code # P1294 will set when stopped in idle (as above) after 25-27 seconds.

If, when stopped for less than 25 seconds, I take my foot off the brake for a split second and allow the car to advance a foot or so, and do this before each 25 seconds has elapsed, the MIL will not set. Obviously this is NO CURE for the problem.

This problem has been haunting me for too long. I have not found any intake leaks by spraying throttle body cleaner at appropriate gaskets, hoses and tubes. I have also replaced my IAC and TPS Sensor with another one. These steps have not changed the issue for me. Otherwise the car is great. Has anyone had such a problem? Better than that, does anyone have other good ideas?

Your response will be greatly appreciated, Thanks, Nomar

I have a 1996 Intrepid (3.5L) and have the same problem.  Haven't switched out the IAC or TPS and intend to get it in to the dealer this week.  I think Chrysler has a problem here.  I have 107K on the vehicle and this just started.  How many miles do you have on yours? Also, are there any tech bulletins on this issue?

I had the same problem with the same car. I bought the manual to look for the idle speed screw. I made some mods and after installing some mods for increased air flow, it started to idle over 1500. I adjusted the screw and this fixed the poroblem...
