We have recently purchased a traditional siamese kitten from a cattery and his eyes are crossed,is this a result of the breeding or normal?

I have had many siamese cats in my lifetime, and it is very normal for the eyes to be crossed, but not desired by breeders or owners who want a perfect siamese cat.

Crossed eyes are common in the breed, although they will not affect your cats health. Breeders try to breed out these traits, but they do still pop up. Crossed eyed siamese make lovely pets, they just should not be used in breeding.

You bought a defective Siamese!

NO REPUTABLE breeder will create an animal with impaired vision.  This is a disservice to the poor creature and the breed as a whole.

In the first half of the twentieth century, before the detrimental nature of these physical deformities earned their ill repute, Siamese HAD to be cross-eyed and have kinked tails in order to be displayed at cat shows.  Fortunately, we have decided kindness is enlightened!

The "breeder" you purchased your kitten from is a BAD one, and likely does other disservices to his poor animals, like overbreeding, underfeeding, overcrowding, and a lack of maintenance and socialization.

For tips on how to distinguish a good breeder from a bad one, please visit this page:

Or, BETTER YET, don't buy from a breeder but adopt from a rescue group!  For more information, please visit NYC Siamese Rescue at nycsiamese.org

crossed eyes and kinked tails are faults in a Siamese. This is a genetic problem and either the female or the male should no longer be used for breeding.

This means you did NOT use a reputable breeder, as any good breeder will have eliminated this defect from their animals.  To learn how to find a REPUTABLE breeder, please visit this page on the NYC Siamese Rescue (nycsiamese.org) website:
