Slavery. It was between the northern states and the southern states. Southerners were pro slavery. South lost. There's more to it, of course. But that's the basic idea.

The Civil War started over the issue of states rights. Slavery and tariffs were the main reasons. Southern states depending low tariffs and slavery for their economic survival were the north depended on high tariffs and no slavery for theirs. With he election of Abraham Lincoln, a sworn anti-slavery advocate, the southern states decided to leave the union. President Lincoln felt the union should be preserved and hence the Civil War began.
