In my opinion, the USS Titan must be a new class of ship.  In the book "A Time For War, A Time For Peace" (a series of Star Trek books I thoroughly enjoyed) the designer of the USS Titan is mentioned.  This new ship has a more diverse crew than any ship in StarFleet history. Plus I also think that it is high time that Starfleet made more new ships to explore with.  It is a new time with no war going on.  Starfleet needs new ships to explore unexplored space with.  This is precisely what the USS Titan is going to do.  With it's diverse crew and bigger and better ship, the USS Titan will make new friends and enemies.

A brand new Defiant Class that doesn't make the Nacelles so vulnerable. This class is the same size as the Prometheus, but more powerful.

All above answers may not be wrong canonically, but as according to Simon & Schuster (who are currently publishing the Star Trek: Titan novels), it is a Luna-Class Heavy Cruiser. Somewhat similar to the Original USS Enterprise NCC-1701 (in function only, not necessarily in looks), it has no specific design specifications as of yet.

In fact, S&S are promoting a contest for all interested to submit designs for the new Luna-class, and the winner's version will be professionally rendered and given credit for the concept. A pretty cool thing if you ask me, the ultimate fan contribution: Designing a starship.

The U.S.S. Titan should be either a Soverign Class ship, in which case we would see more of its interior in the future, or perhaps a totally new class of starship, combining elements of the Galaxy Class and Soverign Class vessels.

It cant be a Sovereign cause there were only two built due to a flaw as i understand it that was corrected in the Enterprise NCC-1701-E only, making it the only operational Sovereing class ship in existence, the original USS Sovereing was supposidly mothballed.

From the information on the design contest web page:
"U.S.S. Titan, NCC-80102, Luna-class. The Titan is a midsize Starfleet vessel, approximately 450 meters in length (larger than the U.S.S. Voyager, smaller than the Enterprise-D), with a crew complement of 350. Titan's hull configuration is comparable to other established Starfleet vessels."

Until it is seen in a movie or on TV, nothing in Star Trek is canon, so there is no way of really knowing what type of ship the TITAN will be.

Luna class.  Mid-size between Intrepid (USS Voyager) and Galaxy (USS Enterprise-D).

This is according to the Titan series of books.

Design is also available following a reader competition over at Simon Says:

http://www.simonsays.com/content/feature.cfm?sid=44&feature_id=4347

In terms of whether this is cannon, unless the Titan ever graces our screens, we'll never know.

According to the Pocket Book series Star Trek: Titan (stories that focused on Riker's new command) the Ship is a new Luna Class vessel larger than the Intrepid class and smaller than the Galaxy class. see wikipedia entry here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Titan_%28Star_Trek%29

although not canon, the published books by Pocket Books are more official than random websites out there.

I prefer to go by the book series, star trek Titan by Andy Mangels, it has the Titan as a Luna Class ship, slightly smaller than a sovereign (Its named for Saturn's moon, not its size), they had a contest to design it and everything, looks pretty cool

LUNA CLASS
The USS Titan is described in the books as being a Luna-class starship, which entered service in the late 24th century. This class of starships was originally conceived in 2369 by Starfleet engineer, Dr. Xin Ra-Havreii. Dr. Ra-Havreii was motivated by the discovery of the Bajoran wormhole that year and so the Luna-class was originally designed to explore planets in the Gamma quadrant. The advent of the Dominion War caused Starfleet to shelve the plans for these exploratory vessels in favor of more heavily-armed starships. With the end of the war, Starfleet re-evaluated the Luna-class plans and decided to proceed with the project. Initially, 12 ships were ordered, and all were completed by 2379. These vessels have been compared to the Constitution-class starships of the previous century, which carried out similar roles.

The Luna-class vessels carry a modest armanent, sufficient to defend themselves in many situations, but not as well armed as the larger Galaxy and Sovereign classes, nor the similarly sized but more combat-oriented Akira-class. As with most starships, Luna-class ships are not designed for atmospheric operations or combat but carry a complement of 8 shuttles of differing specification which are capable of operations in or out of planetary atmospheres. Additionally, as with some other Starfleet ship classes, the Luna-class ships include a "captain's yacht," a larger and more luxurious vessel than typical shuttlecraft for the express use of the vessel's commanding officer.
