on some breezes and neons there are cold solder joints on the back of the display. check the odometer also. it might work and not work every now and then. where the four or three main plugs on the back of the display plug into needs to be resoldered.

Vehicle speed sensor is what tells the speedometer what to do. If your vehicle speed sensor doesnt work it wont allow your transmission to shift out of gear.

Autozone does free check engine light diagnostics. Most likely your Inbound or outbound speedsensor isnt working.

Speed sensor. My car had the same problem. I guess there is an input and Output sensor. 20 bucks each for the part 100 bucks to have some yahoo install it. Simple to do yourself also. Located on the the transmission.

You need to go to the dealership buy a speed out put and an input sensor. Not expensive. They  have problems with both ,so I'd deal with both now.
