I'm training my 14 week old Chi to use a litter. He is doing very well! He now goes on his own most of the time. The problem is, when he sniffs around, litter gets on his nose, and he licks it off. The vet said if he eats litter even in small doses, it could cause huge entestein problems and could plug him up (MAKE HIM REALLY SICK). Even though he doesn't purposely eat it, it still scares me! I tried the recycled rolled up paper, and he and my cat just think it's food, I also cannot paper train him cause he rips and chews the paper to shreds, I also cannot put him outside because it's cold where I live. HELP!

Congratulations on your new chihuahua and on the excellent progress you have made.  I live in Minnesota, so I understand not putting the little thing out in a snowbank and saying "Go follow nature's call".  In that situation, nature calls for cuddling on the mama's lap under a warm blankie.

Yes, it's true that if a dog eats a lot of litter, it can bind them up.  One of my two girls does the same thing, roots around until she finds a spot she likes.  The few crumbs that are left on her nose don't seem to hurt her, she weighs 4 pounds and is fully grown.  I do agree that if he's eating litter, you might have a problem.  I would just keep an eye on him, if he starts acting constipated, he's got too much in there and it's acting like a plug.  Making sure he has lots of water available and giving him some fiber will also help keep things moving (my vet swears by carrots).

I use clumping cat litter, which tends to stick together rather than 'puff up'.  You can also try spraying the surface with 'bitter apple' or some other substance meant to keep dogs from chewing.  I got it at the local Petco or Petsmart.  It makes whatever it's sprayed on taste awful, although I would imagine cat litter isn't all that tasty to begin with.

Consider having him neutered, since that will inhibit him from developing the habit of lifting the leg and keep the pee in the litter tray.  I also recommend getting the book Chihuahuas for Dummies, which is the best book I have on the care and maintenance of these adorable little creatures.

Thanks again Chimama for your intelligent input! Of course, my little Chi gets fresh water every couply of hours! I also use the clumping cat litter, it works very well!!! I will however look into the bitter apple you suggested. Ofcourse I will have him neutered. Interesting fact: if all animals (dogs and cats) were not abandoned or in shelters, in other words all had homes, every single person in this world would have to own 56 animals. Get your animals neutered-spayed people!!! I also went out to buy the book chihuahua for dummies, wonderful book so far! Thanks again!!!
