Chocolate doesn't give dogs a "disease", per se.  Chocolate contains caffiene and theobromides which dogs are not able to process through their digestive systems.  These chemicals are present in all chocolate but are at their highest levels in darker chocolate.  Bakers chocolate contains the highest levels while milk chocolate contains the lowest.  All chocolate can be harmful to dogs.
As little as 1/3 oz. per pound of body weight can be harmful or even fatal.
