this is the stupidest questionm ive ever herd!!! no they will not eat their own puppie.  only lions do stuff like that. what a retard. u shouldnt have bred your dog if you dont know this. give your dog to the aspca so they can find a good home for it. the dog doesnt deserve an owner like u!!!

I don't know who posted that last reply but it certainly wasn't me!  That retard not only knows nothing about dogs but he can't spell or hit the shift key either.  I wish 8 year olds with down syndrome wouldn't use my damn nickname!!!!!!!!
But in answer to the original question, yes they sometimes do eat their own puppies.  I'm not sure what causes them to do this but I have seen it with my own eyes.

just to let you know,it does happen but it is not "common" and it doesn't mean she's a bad dog. mother nature has giving all animals instincts for good reasons.i breed rats to feed my snakes, and i have seen them eat there young as well.NASTY!!!by the way if you were referring to the mom trying to clean the puppies at birth,it could look to someone that maybe she was going to eat them but they just eat the "sacks"(forgot what there called) that the puppies were born in.JUST AS NASTY!!!i have heard that there are some foreign cultures that will eat those "sacks" as well.YUMMY!!!...lol

ive only seen this happen with poodls and pomerainians myself it isnt common but its apart of natural selection my male pit rot mix shares in the cleaning and raising of his pups from day one and my american bull girl has never snapped at him or anyone else when they are handled.newborns should be weighed each day to make sure they are putting on weight

Pitt bulls should be extinct. Being bitten by one and bleeding for 8 hours straight while you go find more clean towels that are not crusted with blood is not fun. They are bred to be viscious now days. More of a play thing to show off. They are almost never trained. That is one problem with people who own them, they dont socialize or train them. SO it is the moron owners and the dogs themselves. The one that bit me was not abused in anyway just fed and let to be as a normal dog was. They have bad genes, genes that were handed down from fighting dogs, they still have retained them. Find a better dog. Preferably not an over bred breed like labs, cocker spaniels which were down to 17 dogs after one of the WW'sand have bad genes that make them "suddenly attack their owner" thats a diff issue. Get a dog like a mix from a shelter that needs it, or a dog that was bred for better purposes such as hunting or just pet qualities such as small breeds. I sound ignorant but ...survival of the species tells me to get rid of the thing that is causing distress and death.

Sometimes dogs do eat their puppies, cats also,I have seen both do it. Sometimes it is because the pup has something wrong with it that we cannot sense. Such as we brought an eight year old red husky home from the shelter. Our other seven dogs get along great. We brought the new one home and introduced him, and they all rejected him. We took him to the vet and found out that he was deaf. Mother dogs can sense this early on, causing them to sometimes eat their pups.

I don't know why they do it but they do. Don't get grossed out over all dogs they don't mean to do it. It just happens not all dogs do it.

Dogs in general will eat their puppies for fear that they can not feed or protect them. so rather than watch their puppies suffer they will eat them.

All animals will have occasions where they eat their young. Sometimes it is simply because they feel they do not have enough privacy to raise their pups in. Put your dog's whelping box in a quiet room where people rarely go, such as a guest bedroom. Sometimes the mother will eat her puppies because there is not enough food and/or water available for her, and she would rather kill them instantly then have them suffer slowly due to lack of food or water. In any case, if your dog eats her puppies, there is something that is just not right.

As I am not a vet and I do not know everything about breeding dogs, you could ask your vet about this problem. Best of luck with your dogs. :)

LOOK FIRST LET ME ANSWER TO THE FIRST CH REPLY.U ARE THE ONE WHO IS RETARTED U ANSWER WITH OUT PROPER KNOWLEDGE BUT CLEAR STUPIDITY.DOGS ARE ANIMALS THAT WERE ONCE WILD.AS IN THE WILDERNESS THEY TAKE SOME INSTINCTS THEY HAD TO SURVIVE IN THE WILD.WHEN A PUPPY WAS SICK ,DEAD OR DIEING,THEY WOULD EAT THE PUP,SO THE SMELL WOULD NOT ATRACT PREDITORS AND SO HER LITTER WILL BE SAFE.IT WOULD ALSO EAT THEM IF THEY ARE SICK SO IT WILL NOT TRANSMITT THE DISEASE TO THE OTHER PUPS.THUS CAUSING UR DOMESTICATED DOG TO HAVE THESE INSTINCTS OF THE WILD.NOT ONLY PITBULLS DO THIS TOUGH.....I HOPE I WAS INFORMATIVE AND HELPFULL.THANKYOU.....SALVATORE.

i have heard that the mother will eat their pups if they smell human scent on the puppies. You are not suppose to touch the pups til it is time to remove them from their mother because if the mother smells human scent she will kill them.

I've also seen it first hand. She had started off eating one and we had to get it away from here which is where she became aggressive and was growling. The second pup she had in here mouth, jaw locked and was going in circles. We had called the vet and he advised us to get the baby away and move her to another room with fresh blankets etc. in order to in his words,"start fresh and relieve her from whatever reason she was stressing out." Yes it worked she did fine with the remainder of the litter.

Our dog just ate one of her pups tonight. WE SAW IT. It was horrible. She was eating him alive. She was eating his head, crunching bones with blood running down her jaws. I'M SICK OVER IT. I wish someone could tell me why she would do this. I'm going to get rid of her now, we've had her for 3 years and love her so much but.....that was just to much for me. I can't even look at her now.
