double strike is doing both first strike and normal damage.  So it hits twice.

2/1 double strike vs. 2/4
the 2/1 will kill the 2/4 but the 2/4 will also kill the 2/1.  2/1 deals its first strike damage to the 2/4.  Then he does another 2 damage during normal combat damage.  Thus dealing 4 damage to the 2/4.

What if a 4/4 with double strike is battling a, lets say 3/4.  It would kill the 3/4, then would it go on to do 4 damage to that player's life?
