i am the proud companion of 4 chi's. they spend most of their days as a pack. one for all and all for one. during their down time they constantly lick one anothers eyes. is this a cleaning ritual they share with one another? is this normal for chi's?

This is completely normal.  I think if you watch long enough, certain dogs lick certain other dogs, there's a hierarchy going on.  My beta will lick my alpha's eyes and muzzle, you probably also notice that they all like to lick your face, same thing, showing respect and submission to the pack leader.

I believe it's an echo of the behavior of adult wolves, plus the salt I'm sure tastes good.

Muzzle licking in pups is how they request their mother to regurgitate food for them (female wolves stuff themselves, carrying the meat home in their stomachs and then bringing some of it back up to feed their litter).  Adult wolves shows submission by doing the same.
