My female pug is getting ready to whelp her first litter and my vet has me very worried
about complications. How common are bad complications, and what are my chances of an
"at home" whelp?

My female just had her first litter and the birthing process was ok. I would make sure you are there when she goes into labor. I had to break a couple of the sacks because she was busy cleaning the other pups and wasn't worried about the one in the sack at the time. She had 7 pups and afterward I had a hard time getting her to feed them. Using the birthing cloth I held the babies until the started sucking. But now she's a pro at it. I wish you good luck. Let me know how it goes.

well complications are more common if your pug is very small or very large and very over wight if your dog has a large birth canal she should be fine and talk to your vet about her and the number of pups she is going to have
hope i helped
