I have a 96 jeep grand Cherokee. When i accelerate quickly, it sputters and hesitates and the rpms drop. As the vehicle runs longer, it becomes worse. It is especially noticeable when pulling long hills.  At times it will do it on flat land if i press the gas firmly as f to pass someone. I have had it checked and the computer said to replace the Oxygen Sensor. This did not help. i have replaced the fuel filter and checked for water in the gas. nothing seems to help...any ideas?

dude, if it's an engine problem ie. misfired on you cylinders or something like that then you're check engine light would be on, and you can get it checked with a opd2 scanner at a local autozone. sounds like a tranny problem though, transmission slippage, try using some lucas tranny slip reducer

Men there is three things they could be.
1. there are 2 oxygen sensors one in the Cat and one in the muffler going to the engine.
2.Do a tune-up in case of electrical problems.
3. The Transmission slip but if you took it to autozone and they said 02 sensor or oxygen sensor then is that b/c i had the same problem I have a 1996 grand cherokee with a 7" lift with 35" mud-terrain and thats all I do go mudding and rock krawling and stuff and that thing gave me trouble also.
Let me know. Im selling my jeep to b/w

I don't know if this will help but my Comanche is doing the exact same thing and it was caused by me driving through a deep river Its for sure not the tranny its definitely the engine but you could take off the distributer cap and check under there and make sure it all looks correct.

Check your cat. if could be clogged. it happened to me with my bonniville. sounds like the same problem. even more so with you changing your O2 sensor and nothing. check ur cat. converter after you drive if its glowing red its clogged(take off heat sheilds around it) or just take it off and see if its clogged. you should be able to look through your cat.

DO NOT use any tranny slip reducer!!! if the trans was slipping, the rpms would go up, not down! i am having a similar problem with my jeep, i have a 94 wrangler with the 4.0, i've been told to check the fuel injectors, and see if i have a clogged catylitic converter

anymore specifics on this problem? it could be anything from a clogged catalytic converter to crossed #1 and #2 fuel injector conectors to a t.c.c issue, or an aray of sensors that could even involve your temprature sensor sender that is mounted on your thermostat housing.

You may have a computer problem. Has your battery went dead lately. Mine did and it was doing the same thing yours is doing. take it to the dealer. NOT autozone.. And the dud about your tranny slipping, hes gets the dummy of the yr award. Good luck man..
