Need to get some information on how to test search algrithms of search engines for their effectiveness in search relevance (returning documents/pages relevant to search terms).

I have been using some controlled data to test the relevancy algorithms(create documents which have certain no. of "hits" in metadata and attachments and expect the search engine to return those docs in a certain order). Want to know whether there is a better way of testing this. Best Practices ? Ideas ? Anyone
