My 8 yoa male boxer Jake has been coughing and gagging, then expelling large quantities of foamy mucus, which when I clean up has flecks of bright red blood in it.  I don't know when this started because he was in my mothers backyard for about a year until a month ago.  My vet has diagnosed him with irritable bowel syndrome and has him on metronidazole 250mg BID, but I don't think this is linked.  I know I have to limit his water intake because he will drink until he pukes.  I also know he has lost A LOT of weight (25#'s), and for some reason I just can't get him to regain any of it.  I am worried about heartworms for one thing due to his backyard experience, but when my vet listened to his heart and lungs they sounded clear.  Does anyone know what I am looking at?
